‎Alaska Photographica: Early Film Photography‎

‎ARCHIVE OF EARLY FILM PHOTOGRAPHS RETAINED BY GUERNEY HAYS A CINEMA SET AND LIGHTING SPECIALIST FROM OREGON WITH MANY PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE SET OF The Chechahcos A 1924 AMERICAN SILENT FILM SET DURING THE KLONDIKE GOLD RUSH AND THE FIRST FILM SHOT IN ALASKA‎

‎Various locations in Oregon and Alaska 1930. Approximately 325 photographs twenty postcards and real photo postcards a linen- backed map of Alaska and a few assorted ephemeral items all housed in a contemporary leather satchel. Generally minor wear some chipping to about twenty photographs. Overall very good. A treasure house of silent cinema photography from the Pacific Northwest and Alaska featuring over 300 images from THE CHECHAHCOS and other films produced in the orbit of the film's director Lewis H. Moomaw all retained by one of his crewmen Guerney William Hays. <br> <br> THE CHECHAHCOS released in 1924 was the first feature film shot in Alaska. "Cheechako" is a native word referring to a "greenhorn" or someone newly arrived in the mining districts of Alaska or northwestern Canada. A melodramatic tale of the Klondike Gold Rush the was directed by Lewis H. Moomaw of the Alaska Moving Pictures Corporation. The story was based in part on the experiences of the film's producer Austin E. Lathrop known as "Alaska's first home-grown millionaire." The film has been preserved in the National Film Registry and can easily be viewed on the internet. Offered here is a large collection of photographs and other ephemera once belonging to a CHECHAHCOS crew member named Guerney William Hays 1880-1952 including film stills snapshots from the set and other images of Alaska scenery. Many of the images match up with scenes from the completed film. The subject matter includes all that might be expected from a film produced in and about Alaska: glaciers dogsleds saloons archvillains and damsels in distress along with shots of the crew and technology that made the film possible. <br> <br> The largest and most professionally-produced photographs in the collection are eighty 8-x- 10-inch prints almost all of them clearly from the CHECHAHCOS shoot with twenty-one stamped on the verso by the Alaska Moving Pictures Corporation and with either a printed or manuscript title written along with the stamp reading "The Chechakos" the spelling of which was later tweaked to its release title. One of the stills shows the entire company of the Alaska Moving Pictures Corporation about 150 people in the snow beside their Pullman cars; two banners for the film company hang outside the rail cars. A separate shot of the film company shows their train at the entrance to McKinley Park with a banner hanging on the train reading "Private Car Alaska Moving Pictures Corporation Entrance to McKinley Park on the Alaska Railroad." Other stills show scenes from the film shots of the cast and crew preparing to start scenes posed scenes clearly intended for use as publicity stills cast group pictures behind-the-scenes shots of the cameramen and other crew with various equipment photographs of empty interiors perhaps to be used for continuity a few featuring the dog sled teams and more. In addition to documenting the production these images also present a rare view of Alaska in the early-20th century. <br> <br> The remaining 240 images most of which measure approximately 3 x 5 inches were likely not formally produced by the film company for use as publicity but are in fact production photographs and still stand as valuable visual documentation of the early filmmaking process. While some of these photos are more of the vernacular sort the great majority of the images show a mixture of preproduction production and set-related photographs from the film company's time in Alaska shooting THE CHECHAHCOS and from other production's attached to the career of Lewis H. Moomaw the film's director. A great number of these images were likely produced as working production photographs - executed for the use of the company during the shooting process scouting for locations documenting costumes set continuity set construction what might today be called craft services suggesting or documenting potential camera set-ups or as studies for potential publicity stills and more. While not created as traditional publicity products these images capture the early filmmaking process both in front of and behind the camera presenting a quite uncommon slice of film production history. The fact that they were produced during the production of a film in Alaska make them an even more valuable source of information on the filmmaking process in the 1920s in a most unusual place. Production stills are produced in very small quantities compared to publicity stills are often unique or close to unique records of a production have a much lower survival rate and are keenly sought after as historical records of the filmmaking process. <br> <br> One of the few captioned photographs shows four wives of the CHECHAHCOS cast and crew on a fishing expedition including Moomaw's wife and Mrs. Guerney Hays. A few other photographs show an actress posing with crude dummies that were apparently about to be sent to their doom in a canoe scene in the Alaskan wilderness. Other production photographs from Alaska feature scenes on glaciers one of which shows the exact spot from a moment in the opening minute of the film a young girl with a giant Alaskan crab who is also pictured in the larger professional images and is in the film film crews poised on icy ground dog sled teams identified locations in Skagway and more. <br> <br> One of the other films pictured here is likely CALL OF THE ROCKIES 1929. This western was filmed in Oregon the usual home of the filmmakers involved in the Alaska Moving Pictures Corporation with Moomaw as supervising producer. CALL OF THE ROCKIES was directed by Raymond K. Johnson one of the cinematographers on THE CHECHAHCOS and features two actors identified in pencil captions on the verso of photographs present here: Russell Simpson and Jim Mason. There are numerous photographs featuring a western wagon train and other images of the traditional western which either appeared in CALL OF THE ROCKIES or perhaps one of Moomaw's other films produced in Oregon in the 1920s - UNDER THE ROUGE 1925 or FLAMES 1926 the latter of which climaxed in a raging forest fire and featured an early screen appearance by Boris Karloff. <br> <br> All of the postcards feature Alaskan scenes or subjects and were most likely acquired while the film company was shooting in Alaska or produced for them while they were there. This is the case for at least one of the postcards - a Christmas greeting with the banner at bottom reading "Compliments of the Alaska Moving Pictures Corporation." The final item of note here is a folding linen- backed map of Alaska issued by the Alaska Steamship Company. The map measures about 21 x 30 inches and was issued in 1917. It was almost certainly taken along to Alaska by Hays for the filming of THE CHECHAHCOS linen- backed either before-hand or while in Alaska to prevent damage from over-use. The entire collection of photographs and ephemera is housed in a period leather satchel. <br> <br> These photographs were collected and retained by Guerney or Gernie William Hays 1880-1952 who spent a career in the early film industry mostly in Oregon. Some pieces of ephemera bear his name and some of the larger stills are annotated "Hays" on the verso. His 1918 draft registration lists him as a motion picture operator in Portland and his obituary lists him as a member of the International Alliance of Stage Employees. His only film credit in the Internet Movie Database is for THE CHECHAHCOS for which he is credited with "sets and lighting" and also an uncredited supporting role on screen. One of the larger-format photographs features a crew member in a cramped equipment room with dozens of lights and mounds of cables; this is almost certainly Hays himself or perhaps one of his assistants. One of the photo developer's envelopes bears the name of Hobart H. Brownell the cinematographer of THE CHECHAHCOS. Two of the photographs here are inscribed to Hays - one from the actor Bert Sprotte in 1919 and the other from banjo player Eddie Peabody who has inscribed his portrait to Hays writing that "No finer stage manager I ever worked with." Another photograph shows Peabody's elaborate stage show. <br> <br> THE CHECHAHCOS remains an important early film for its authentic depiction of Alaskan life. Movies about the great white north were popular with early film audiences but were usually filmed in California. When Lewis H. Moomaw proposed to shoot a film entirely in Alaska about the days of the Klondike Gold Rush in the territory locals in Alaska jumped at the chance to find him funding. Upon arrival in Anchorage fully half of the town showed up to greet the film company. The cast and crew would spend three months filming in and around Anchorage the small mining town of Girdwood on Childs Glacier Abercrombie Rapids and Eyak Lake. The film premiered in the Empress Theatre in Anchorage on December 11 1923 and played to packed houses across Alaska the next year. Sadly the film never found a large audience in the continental United States playing occasionally over the next two years before falling into obscurity. The film was essentially lost until the year 2000 when a print was restored by archivists at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Three years later the film was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry. <br> <br> The Library of Congress's press release when they selected THE CHECHAHCOS to the National Film Registry describes the film as such: "This independent regional film was the first feature film produced in Alaska and is renowned for its spectacular location footage of the lonely and unfathomable Alaskan wilderness frenzied dogsled pursuits and life-and-death struggles on the glaciers." <br> <br> A wonderful collection of great historical interest for early film scholars and of the history of Alaskan cinema. hardcover books‎

‎ALASKA: PHOTOGRAPHY‎

‎The 1928 Alaska Tour Photograph Album.‎

‎Alaska: N.p. ca. 1928. Original photograph album measuring 9 x 5 1/4 inches and bearing 91 original silver gelatin prints of the 1928 Alaska Road Tour by Governor George A Parks the Alaska Road Commissioner Major Malcolm Elliott and Territorial Highway Engineer Robert J. Sommers. THe photographs measure 5 5/8 x 3 1/2 inches and all or nearly so bear a typewritten caption. Original string-tied flexible leather with gilt cover lettering and a photographic title plate. The photographs and the album are both in very good condition. This tour was undertaken by Parks Elliott and Sommers in 1928 to ascertain the need for more highways in Alaska and to discern the work already done on various existing routes such as the Richardson Highway. The trip of 2500 miles to northern and interior Alaska was the first extensive trip that an Alaskan governor had made by airplane. In 1928 there were less than 500 miles of paved roads in the entire state 363 on the Richardson Highway and 44 on the Steese Highway. On the front pastedown of the album is an itinerary photograph listing dates locations miles traveled and form of transportation. All in all they traveled 4580 miles of which 385 were by steamship 467 by rail 281 by railroad speeders automobiles adapted to ride on the rails 432 by truck and automobile 8 by wagon and 2007 by air. They drove a 1928 Ford when they were able photograph included. The largest amount of miles traveled was by air and their pilot was A. A. Bennett photographs included. They left Juneau on May 22 and returned June 28th. Their stops were as follows; Fairbanks Nenana McGrath Ophir Takotna Iditerad Unalakleet Golovin Nome Teller Candle Kotzebue Nulato Ruby Tanana Bettles Wiseman Fort Yukon Circle Hot Springs Livengood Fairbanks Chitina Kennicott. McCarthy Dan Creek Road Chitina and Cordova. Opposite this itinerary is a photograph of a map showing the routes taken. There are 91 original photographs of the sights seen by this group on their Alaska Tour of 1928. There does not seem to be any overriding theme other than transportation and the compiler has included many photographs of these he found interesting. A few examples would be "Bill and wife at their cabin on Ophir-Takotna Road. These people are mining placer gold"; "Freighting on Yukon Highway near Goldstream" ; "Tunnel at head of Fox Gulch tapping Chatanika River watershed for for dredges in Goldstream"; "Gold Dredge at Flat"; "Cabin on Nome-Shelton tram near Nome bridge"; "Gas-driven speeder on Nome-Shelton tram"; "The graveyard at Nulato"; "End of aviation field at Nulato" a panorama of two photographs joined and showing many indigenous people; "Fort Yukon Hotel"; "Alaska Road Commission house at Sallchaket"; "Cableway ferry i.e. a zipline for pedestrians between aviation field and village Golovin"; "Widening of Richardson Highway near Hogans--June 1928"; "Adams grader and caterpillar working between Fairbanks and 18-mile Roadhouse-June 19 1928" etc. Special attention is given to the various airfields as is appropriate as they traveled far by air of Alaska: Fairbanks Airport Nenana Landing Field Unalakleet aviation field Nulato aviation field. Wiseman aviation field Bettles aviation field etc. This album was a portrayal of a government survey of transportation in Alaska and thus there are almost no photographs of strictly natural phenomenon lakes glaciers etc. It is likely that Robert J. Sommers was the photographer as there are numerous photographs of Parks and Elliott but only one of Sommers. Plus included is a leather zip-up satchel with with the initials R. J. S. in gilt and within it are many assorted newspaper articles about Robert J. Sommers. Also included is a large 13 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches original hand-colored photograph of the Taku Glacier by E. Andrews a n original copy printed matted of the R. J. Sommers Construction Company showing a busy yard in 1944 a packet of personal photographs from R. J. Sommers an original photograph of Sitka an original hand-colored photograph entitled Lights O Juneau and a professional portrait photograph of Sommers."After Alaska achieved territorial status in 1912 the Territorial Legislature repealed the 1904 road tax law and replaced it with a flat four dollar tax imposed on taxpayers no matter where they lived in Alaska. By this time in 1913 the federally-operated Alaska Road Commission ARC had created 2167 miles of trail 617 miles of winter sled trail and 862 miles of wagon road. 0f this mileage the ARC considered the 419 miles of the Valdez to Fairbanks road its most important accomplishment. It was over this route in 1913 that the ARC sent an army truck on an experimental journey. The truck completed a 922-mile round trip including a side trip to Chitina between July 28 and August 19 averaging about 50 miles per day. During World War I federal appropriations for road-building in Alaska decreased. But advances in road-building equipment and automobiles made during the war benefited Alaska after the war. Motor vehicles saved about one-third of the cost of horse-drawn traffic per ton carried per mile. The average cost of moving a ton of freight one mile was 37 cents by bobsled on a winter sled road 50 cents by auto or truck and $1.37 by wagon in summer. By 1919 automobiles and trucks made up about 90 per cent of the traffic moving over Alaskan wagon roads. In 1920 the ARC was able to acquire war-surplus army trucks and tractors greatly improving its road-building and maintaining capabilities."Alaksa Humanities.Robert J. Sommers a civil engineer came to Alaska in 1900. Sommers served as superintendent of the Alaska Road Commission from 1915-1918 and both Survey General and Secretary of Alaska from 1919-1921. He later served as the first territorial highway engineer for the state. In 1931 he formed his own construction company R. J. Sommers Construction Company with former Governor Parks as his vice-president. In his oral history R.J. Sommers talks about working for a mining company in 1904 at Teller Alaska attending school at the Hails Engineering College construction of the steel bridge on Cushman Street working as superintendent of the Alaska Road Commission in 1918 the contract with Charlie Fisher to build the first building at the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines in Fairbanks constructing buildings at the air base his involvement in the first ferry system from Haines to Juneau the ferry Chilkat buildings he has constructed in the Juneau area road work in Douglas construction of VHF stations for aircraft communications building airfields in Nome the Russian plane exchange building airfields at Moses Point Unalakleet and Galena problems with the construction of the Mendenhall Bridge Tom Riggs his appointment as the Mining Inspector for the Territory of Alaska appointment as Surveyor General being the first territorial highway engineer his association with George Parks his support of the Boy Scouts etc. Sommers Construction built the first building at the University of Alaska Juneau as well as many bridges and airfields around the state. He died in Santa Barbara in 1972The pilot A. A. Bennett was born in Oregon around 1888. Bennett was a pilot in San Diego before coming to Alaska in the mid-1920s. He is believed to be the first pilot to land on Kuskokwim River ice at Bethel. He flew for Fairbanks Airplane Company and later was the flying partner of Bennet-Rodenbaugh Company in Fairbanks there is a photo of his hangar herein. He brought legendary Joe Crosson to Alaska. Bennett left Alaska for Idaho and later lived in Las Vegas. He was inducted into the Alaska Aviation Museum Hall of Fame in 2012.George Alexander Parks was an American engineer who worked in Alaska Territory for most of his career. Following an unexpected nomination from President Calvin Coolidge he became the territory's first resident governor. Transportation was a major issue for the territory during the Parks administration. To offset running deficits and reduced federal subsidies rates for the Alaska Railroad were raised and a toll was implemented on the Richardson Highway. One area that saw an improvement however was air travel. In 1925 funds for landing fields was authorized by the territorial legislature. Two years later subsidized air travel between the Alaska Railroad and Seward Peninsula was initiated. Parks became an avid enthusiast of air travel using it to inspect much of the territory in May and June 1928.Of Major Malcolm Elliott not much is known other than that he held a military post and was the fifth President of the Alaska Road Commission 1927-1932 N.p. hardcover‎

Albert Watson has made his mark as one of the world's most successful fashion and commercial photographers during the last three decades, while creating his own art along the way. Over the years, his striking images have appeared on more than 250 covers of Vogue and have been featured in countless other publications - many of the photographs iconic portraits of rock stars, actors and other celebrities. Albert Watson is an artist who greatly enriches our perception by his unique photographic view. His visual language follows his own distinctive rules and concepts of quality. With their brilliance, urgency, even grandeur, his photographs stand out so clearly against the world of today's images.
