‎Recueil composé de 12 photographies au collodion humide tirées sur papier albumine colorisées à la main. La colorisation des photographies utilise la technique traditionnelle de la peinture à la colle (pigments naturels additionnée de colle) avec un pinceau. Les photographes faisaient ainsi appel à des peintres et non aux aquarellistes des estampes. Album formé de deux ais de bois recouverts d'un tissus aux fibres apparentes brun, reliés à la japonaise en acordéon. Chaque dépliant (recto et verso) présente 6 photographies, au recto (scène animée) des vues de paysages et villes, au verso, des personnages. Cette présentation est traditionnelle des albums de voyages "views and costume", que reprendront les japonais. Chaque photographie : 8,7x13,2cm. Les 2 premières photographies sont passées, les pigments rouges de la peinture étant de ce fait très visibles. Pour le second volet, la première et la 6e photo sont également fanées laissant également très visibles les pigments rouges utilisés. La cinquième possède 2 zones grattées laissant apparaître le blanc du papier. Piqûres dans les marges et sur quelques photographies. Les vues représentent des vues célèbres de la route du Tokaido, le temple Meiji à 2 reprises, une rue animée avec des lampions, une vue du mont fuji avec le célèbre pont en bois... Les premiers recueils ne montraient avec Felice Beato que des vues du Japon ancien en noir et blanc, et la représentation et la demande ont évolué. Ces vues japonaises sont très proches dans leur mise en scène et leur cadrage de l'art de l'estampe. On y retrouve le goût japonais, déjà illustré par l'estampe, pour les sites célèbres. En outre, on ne voit quasiment plus d'hommes dans les photographies de cette époque car les photographies sont censés représenter le Japon contemporain et les hommes sont désormais habillés à l'occidental, il n'y a plus de samouraï. C'est pourquoi ce sont les femmes qui sont représentées dans plus de 70 pour cent des photographies de cette époque et on voit dans ce recueil qu'un seul homme, un tireur de voiture. A ce propos, ce sont toujours des Geishas qui sont utilisées pour les photos. Tous les ateliers avaient ainsi des contrats avec des maisons de Geisha qu'ils faisaient poser pour toutes les scènes : musiciennes, etc. Les photographies de femmes : Une femme à l'éventail, 3 femmes se tenant les mains, 2 femmes dans une voiture, 3 femmes dansant, les femmes d'une maison de geishas. On doit noter que toute attribution à un photographe est difficile en raison même de l'histoire de la photographie au Japon, car tous les ateliers européens et les premiers ateliers Japonais ont été rachetés par des Japonais et les plaques continuaient d'être exploitées sous le nom du nouveau photographe. Peu d'albums et de photographies portent une signature ou une marque d'atelier. Par exemple, on sait que Beato quitte la photographie professionnelle en 1872,Le baron von Stillfried quitte définitivement le Japon en 1881. La même année, Kimbei Kusakabe (1841-1934), élève de Beato et Stillfried, ouvre son propre studio à Yokohama. Il rachètera quatre ans plus tard une partie des négatifs de ses deux maîtres et les retirera régulièrement. - Photos sur www.Edition-originale.com -‎
