‎Sehr gutes Ex. - On September 29, 1900 Jessie Tarbox Beals received her first official by-line as a news photographer in The Country Reformer, a Brattleboro, Vermont newspaper. In 1904, she obtained the first permit to be issued to a woman authorizing the taking of photographs at the St. Louis World's Fair. Born in Canada, she moved to the United States at the age of seventeen and traveled extensively from the small town of Williamsburg, Massachusetts to Jacksonville, Florida; Buffalo, New York; St. Louis, Missouri; San Antonio, Texas; New York City, Chicago and to wherever else she could take newsworthy photographs. From 1900 until her death in 1942 she contributed her photographs to The New York Herald Tribune, The Buffalo Inquirer and the Courier, many regional newspapers and to such major magazines as Ladies' Home Journal, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Country Life and Town and Country. Blazing a trail over which countless women photographers would follow she-single-minded, adventurous, daring and highly talented-broke down the all-male barriers which excluded women from the exciting and demanding field of news photography. Gifted with the "ability to hustle" and a steadfast determination to follow the career she had chosen, she succeeded in becoming the most sought-after woman photographer of her day both as a news photographer and, after opening her first studio in New York in 1905, as an artistic and perceptive portrait photographer. This wonderful story of a fascinating woman and her long, diversified career is filled with her press cuttings, memorabilia, poetry and the remarkable portraits of literary, political and society figures of the time - a revealing, warm portrayal of a gifted, courageous woman.
