Leatherette-backed pictorial paper-covered boards; 1-24 25-306 20pp. Mild external wear; slight lean to text block; still a tight Very Good or better copy with both pictorial inserts present and in good condition bit of wrinkling to the fragile celluloid insert bearing Stalin's silhouette portrait. Unusually well-preserved copy of this landmark of Soviet book design featuring copious examples of the revolutionary photomontage work of Rodchenko and Stepanova. The two extremely fragile inserted design elements - a die-cut folded plate bearing Lenin's portrait on a movie screen and a clear celluloid sheet with the printed silhouette of Stalin are rarely found intact if at all; in this copy both are present and complete in excellent condition. "This bookwork produced by Oakville Galleries represents the third and final version of a photographic work begun two years ago at the Domaine de Kerguehennec in Brittany France where it took the form of a work in situ: a 'fonds photographic' that was placed in the drawers of the castle's library to become a permanent installation. The work represents a monument to a fictional woman photographer who lived in the castle sometime in the late 19th century and who wandered the park - especially the area around the lake - obsessively taking pictures of the landscape. Her mental health slowly deterioriated and eventually she killed herself. Her decline is illustrated in the photographs placed in the drawers in porfolio folders or boxes - ." Longo had major retrospective exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1989 and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in 1990 a touring exhibition throughout Japan in 1995 and more recently a "Survey Exhibition 1980-2009" at Musee D'Art Moderne Et D'Art Contemporain de Nice in France in 2009 and at Museu Colec��o Berardo in Lisbon Portugal in 2010. He was born in New York City's Brooklyn and lives and works on the East Coast. He has exhibited his thought-provoking drawings in New York Texas Milan Munich Naples Amsterdam Rotterdam Paris and Tokyo as well as many other United States galleries. To create works Longo projects photographs of his subjects onto paper and traces the figures in graphite removing all details of the background. After he records the basic contours his long-time illustrator Diane Shea works on the figure for about a week filling in the details. Next he goes back into the drawing using graphite and charcoal to provide "all the cosmetic work".
