Brassai écrit à ses fidèles amis depuis Bürgentock, petite station de ski en Suisse, où il séjourne avec sa femme, Gilberte : …Après lémission très réussi (sic) à Genève en compagnie de (imaginez-vous !) Tino Rossi, de Mireille Mathieu et de Michèle Morgan Samedi passé dans « les Oiseaux de Nuit », nous nous reposons ici à 1000 mètres au-dessus du lac des 4 cantons... Lartiste sétend encore sur quelques détails puis déplore sa récente popularité : …Hélas depuis je ne peux plus passer inaperçu, même pas à Zurich… Dans le train, au restaurant et dans la rue les gens maccostent… « Excusez-moi Monsieur, je vous félicite, vous avez été admirable dans les Oiseaux… ». Mais à Burgenstock personne ne ma repéré encore... La lettre se termine par un amusant post-scriptum de Gilbert, son épouse : …Sauf les vaches à clochettes ! Où sont les temps de Gstaad ? Il faudrait arriver à se rencontrer, quand même…

Brassai et sa femme écrivent à leurs bons amis pour leur raconter lincendie qui manqua de ravager leur propriété du Sud de la France : …Mercredi, le 15, juste après le déjeuner que nous avons pris sur la terrasse de La Manderea, Gilberte me dit : « Il doit y avoir un incendie, je sens le brulé… ». Et ça sentait en effet, la bonne odeur du feu de bois… Peu à peu un nuage noir obscurcissait le soleil et sous cette lumière lugubre le Mistral soufflait avec une rare violence 110 kms à lheure. Le feu savançait vers nous avec une vitesse foudroyante… Le couple décide rapidement de fuir, ils se rendent en voiture à La Turbie, puis, le soir-même, chez des amis, au Cap Martin. Là, par le docteur du village ils apprennent que leur maison est intacte : …« Vous pouvez passer une bonne nuit. Le feu a épargné votre maison et même tous vos arbres… ». Cétait vraiment miraculeux...Brassai continue son récit : …Mais tout danger nétait pas encore écarté. Des centaines de foyers incandescents couvaient encore nattendant quun coup de vent pour être réanimés. Aussi le jeudi et le vendredi nous sommes rentrés à La Manderea juste pour « sauver » dautres affaires. Et en effet, samedi, le 17, la maison faillie de bruler (sic) pour de bon, cette fois. (…) Nous sommes montés dimanche : le spectacle autour de la maison est dantesque : rochers noircis, arbres calcinés et la terre noire, est comme saupoudrée de la neige, tant est épaisse la couche de la cendre…En post-scriptum : …Chère Babeth merci de ton adorable lettre ! et excuse-nous de cette lettre circulaire, mais je nai pas le temps décrire et je nai pas ma SECRÉTAIRE. Je vous embrasse tous, Brassaï...
