BRASSAI
Proust In The Power Of Photography
The University of Chicago Press Chicago: 2001. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. One of the most original and memorable photographers of the twentieth century Brassa was also a journalist sculptor and writer. He took great pride in his writing and he loved literature and language-French most of all. When he arrived in Paris in 1924 Brassa began teaching himself French by reading Proust. Captured by the sensuality and visual strategies of Proust's writing Brassa soon became convinced that he had discovered a kindred spirit. Brassa wrote: "In his battle against Time that enemy of our precarious existence ever on the offensive though never openly so it was in photography also born of an age-old longing to halt the moment to wrest it from the flux of duration in order to 'fix' it forever in a semblance of eternity that Proust found his best ally." He quoted Proust in his own writing and from the annotated books in his library we know that he spent a lifetime studying and dissecting Proust's prose often line by line. Drawing on his own experience as a photographer and author Brassa discovers a neglected aspect of Proust's interests offering us a fascinating study of the role of photography both in Proust's oeuvre and in early-twentieth-century culture. Brassa shows us how Proust was excessively interested in possessing portraits of his acquaintances and how the process by which he remembered and wrote was quite similar to the ways in which photographs register and reveal life's images. This book-beautifully translated by Richard Howard-features previously obscure photographs from Brassa's High Society series and offers a rare glimpse into two of France's most fascinating artistic minds. Contents Introduction I Photography in Proust's Life 1 Birth of a Passion 2 Exchanges of Photographs 3 The Role of Photography in Proust's Artistic Formation II Keys for the Search 4 The Giant Photograph of the Knights of Malta 5 The Portrait of Berma 6 To Win Back Her Husband Gilberte Obtains Photographs of His Mistress 7 Saint-Loup's Disappointment 8 The Longed-for Photograph of Gilberte Swann 9 Miss Sacripant the "Lady in Pink" and Odette: One and the Same Person 10 The Fascinating Duchess de Guermantes 11 When Marcel's Grandmother Poses for Saint-Loup 12 The Profaned Photograph of Vinteuil 13 The Photograph of Charlus Puts Morel to Flight 14 Reincarnations III The Influence of Photography on Proust's Thought 15 A Photographer's Studio 16 Reportage 17 A Lens of Variable Focal Length 18 Chronophotography 19 An A-human Vision 20 Photography at the Origin of Proustian Relativism 21 From Latent Image to Involuntary Memory Translated into English from the French by Richard Howard. BRASSAI.
Paris de Nuit.
Paris Édition Arts et Métiers Graphiques 1933. . First edition. 4to.26 x 20 cm text by Paul Morand 60 gravure reproductions of Brassaï's photographs photo-pictorial wrappers with a spiral binding small ink ownership name to title-page usual general age-toning to text wrappers a little rubbed and mildly creased but overall a good example of a photographic classic. "Night does not show things it suggests them. It disturbs and surprises us with its strangeness." Brassaï. The photographer Hungarian émigré Brassaï 1899 - 1984 claimed no more than observing while moving amid the built environment of Paris and its denizens after dark with his camera and tripod. In 1933 he compiled some of the photographs taken during the two years of these after-dark strolls in a book entitled Paris de nuit. Showing the nocturnal "City of Light" in saturated tones of black grey and neon white the book established a new visual aesthetic in photography and was rightfully considered by John Szarkowski the Director of Photography at MOMA nothing less but "one of the most remarkable of all photographic books". Roth 76; Parr & Badger I 134; Hasselblad 110. Paris, Édition Arts et Métiers Graphiques, [1933]. unknown

Paris Paris-Publications 1932. . First edition. 4to. 48pp. full-page photographic illustrations by Brassai original orange wrappers lettered in white spiral binding renewed else an excellent bright example. "Brassai's nocturnal vision of Paris is so well known and his book Paris de nuit has been so influential . Some of his more edgy work was published in 1932 in a book entitled Voluptes de Paris Pleasures of Paris but contractual disagreements meant that Brassai never acknowledged it. Paris de nuit the book that actually made his reputation is relatively chaste by comparison since it contains the images that were deemed publicly palatable" Parr & Badger. Parr & Badger I p134. BRASSAI MILLER Henry 1891 1980
Photobook Quiet Days In Clichy
Paris: The Olympia Press 8 Rue de Nesle 1958. Second Edition. Printed Wrappers. Fine-/Fine-. Second Edition of this short novel celebrating love art and the Bohemian life with 29 full-page photogravures recto and verso of which one verso only and one double-page photomontage of Paris after dark by Brassai pseudonym of Gyula Halász. Small 8vo 172 x 103mm: 1713pp because of a binding error the blank leaf pp. 175-176 of the first edition was inserted following p. 170 giving the appearance of two fewer pages. Original thick card wrappers with wraparound abstract design by T. Tajiri in grey yellow and black; text printed on thick white wove paper in dark brown ink. About Fine slight spine lean trivial edge wear of this fragile volume. Shifreen & Jackson A100c. Kearney 1.16.2. Auer 364. O'Roark Collection A182 first edition. Originally published in 1956. Both Quiet Days in Clichy and the accompanying short story "Mara-Marignan" date from the time of Tropic of Cancer when Miller was an obscure penniless writer in Paris. A few months after he returned to New York in 1940 a quick moneymaking opportunity writing pornography for an Oklahoma erotica collector named Roy M. Johnson came his way. Early drafts of "Mara-Marignan" and Quiet Days in Clichy were the result. Johnson was not impressed; he found Miller's prose to be "too poetic" and the manuscripts went missing-"lost for over ten years" Miller wrote in 1956-then "turned up miraculously." Miller rewrote both stories in Big Sur in May of that year. The photographs of 1930s Paris are of street-scenes of prostitutes; sailors fondling women in cafes young people flirting kissing dancing and drinking. N. B.
