This American soprano debuted with the Metropolitan Opera in "Romeo et Juliette" in 1906 and remained there developing a huge following until retirement in 1922 appearing in a handful of silent films between 1915 and 1920 as well. ANS at bottom of TNS to her 1p 8�" X 11" n.p. n.y. Very good. Faint age toning and original folds. Near the bottom of a letter dated 28 February 1940 expressing birthday greetings and asking "Have you written a book within the last few years If not I hope you do turn one out very soon." from admirer Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar the diva replies large and bold in black ink: "To thank you for your wishes and refer you to 'Such Sweet Compulsions' published 1938 by Greystone Press available any bookseller!" and signing boldly. Accompanied by a superb glossy 9 3/4" X 7 3/4" news agency photograph showing a smiling Farrar and two men standing behind a flag-draped bannister with a sign in front of the flag reading "Miss Farrar Will Sell Bonds." Original mimeographed paper label neatly affixed to verso which dates this image 29 September 1918 titles it "Opera Star Sells Secretary McAdoo First Bond in Capital Campaign" and describes the scene: "Miss Geraldine Farrar the famous opera singer is aiding the Liberty Loan campaign in Washington. She sold her first bond to Secretary of the Treasury McAdoo. This photo made at the platform of the Treasury Building steps show Miss Farrar Sec. McAdoo and Ass't. Sec. of the Treasury Rowe." unknown

L'article se termine par des consid�rations sur les bienfaits apport�s par la colonisation fran�aise de l'Indochine respectueuse des croyances des moeurs et des tr�sors culturels. Et Claude Farr�re de conclure : "J'ai peur que leur bonheur celui des "populations douces et na�ves du Cambodge du Laos de l'Annam et du Tonkin" h�las ! ne soit fini." Folio and 8vo. Altogether 25 ½ pp. Interesting collection of letters, all addressed to a good friend named Paul whom he calls "Grand" and who appears to be a fellow writer. In a letter from 30 Dec. 1943 Farrère thanks him for dedicating to him a piece called "Fée du platane" and remembers his good friend Pierre Louÿs (1870-1925): "Mon Grand, il y a des semaines, que j'aurais dú t'écrire / au moins depuis le jour que j'ai reçu ta fée du platane, une des plus belles choses que tu aies écrites, et que je suis fier que tu m'aies dédiée. J'ai pensée en la lisant, aux derniers vers / testament qu'écrivit Pierre Louÿs, que nous devons toujours méditer, nous qui touchons à la plume / te souviens-tu?". - In a letter from 1947 he expresses his outrage against Paul Claudel (1868-1955), elected to the Académie française on 4 April 1946: "A propos de l'election de Claudel, j'ai été proprement insulté. Car je ne sais lequel de ces deux bas canards [Claudel et Brisson] a insignué que toutes les attaques brissonnesques contre l'Académie datent de mon élection [...]". Farrère was himself elected to a chair at the Académie française on 26 March 1935, in competition with Paul Claudel, partly thanks to the lobbying efforts of Pierre Benoit. - Further, Farrère reflects on his novels, like "Fern-Errol" and "Homme Seul", which he describes as the "least superficial" works of his life: "Mon Fern-Errol peut plaire ou déplaire / mais je suis sûr que c'est avec mon Homme Seul, ce que j'ai écrit de moins superficiel de toute ma vie […]" (Biarritz, 27 Nov. 1943).

Large 4to. 1½ pp. To "cher vieux Vignand" on the publication of some of his works with which the publisher seems to have been slower than Farrère wished: "[…] Cela dit, en ce qui concerne mes articles sur la marine, je suppose que j'interromps ? De toutes façons, j'imagine qu'on m'enverra un chèque ? Mais, autre chose ? le *** paraîtra-t-il enfin sur 6 pages ? Si oui, mon 'Homme seul' y paraîtra-t-il ?Quand suppose-tu ? Et, si non, me resitue-t-on ma liberté ? Flammarion voudrait publier un jour le volume ? Tâche, si tu peux, d'être mon ambassadeur en l'occurrence. Et, surtout, garde moi ton amitié". - "L'homme seul" was indeed published by Flammarion in 1942.
