Fine. s. l. s. d. 1853 13.50 x 8.80 cm une feuille Autograph letter signed by Gérard de Nerval addressed to his friend Georges Bell four lines written in pencil and signed with his first name ""Gérard"". Stamp mark on verso. Two small pin holes not touching the text two transverse fold marks inherent to the folding of the letter. This short note was written during the writer's penultimate stay at Doctor Blanche's in 1853. This letter has been transcribed in volume 3 of Nerval's Complete Works in the Pléiade edition. Gérard de Nerval met Joachim Hounau known by his pen name Georges Bell at Joseph Méry's home in Marseille in 1843 upon his return from his journey to the Orient. Bell was a very close friend of Gérard de Nerval who on his deathbed would call him to his bedside. Gérard de Nerval's autographs are very rare. unknown

This note has been transcribed in the correspondence published in the Pléiade edition volume 3 p. 889. Astonishing and succinct note written just after his arrival at Doctor Blanche's inviting his friend to dinner ""à la meson sic Blanche"" ""at the Blanche house"". On the envelope in an even more disordered handwriting than that of the note one reads a few words in pencil: ""J'ai donné à Antony et à Blanche . Mirecourt"" ""I gave to Antony and to Blanche . Mirecourt"". Gérard de Nerval had indeed discovered a few months earlier a pamphlet by Eugène de Mirecourt dedicated to him: "".j'ai trouvé la biographie sur l'étalage d'un libraire. Mirecourt m'a bien chargé. Il m'a peint en beau.et en buste. Je relèverai les erreurs quelque autre jour mais il a trop parlé de ma misère"" "".I found the biography on a bookseller's stall. Mirecourt has really gone after me. He has painted me favorably.and in bust. Recipient's name in Nerval's hand on the verso of the leaf. A central fold inherent to the mailing. This letter has been transcribed in Nerval's Complete Works in the Pléiade edition. Gérard de Nerval is finally ""free and released from the Maison Blanche"" after staying there following his crisis of early spring 1841. This is not however a definitive release but probably permission granted by Doctor Blanche to his patient the latter would not be definitively released until November 1841. The handwriting difficult to read in places shows Gérard de Nerval's feverishness as he seeks to reconnect with the literary milieu: ""I bring masses of copy for you and three or four other journals."" Hippolyte Delaunay was editor-in-chief of the review L'Artiste in which Nerval published on April 11th of the same year an article entitled ""Mémoires d'un Parisien Sainte-Pélagie 1832"". unknown

This letter simply dated ""Le 12"" could have been written in August 1849 if we refer to a letter to Ernesta Grisi companion of his friend Théophile Gautier in which the poet mentions such a discount: ""Je n'ai pu toucher l'argent qu'aujourd'hui mercredi. M. Rouy n'y était pas. J'y suis allé 4 fois et j'ai porté les 10F. aujourd'hui je ne sais pas s'il faut faire le prochain feuilleton ni comment il faut signer."" ""I could only get the money today Wednesday. Mr. Rouy was not there. I went 4 times and brought the 10F. today I don't know if I should do the next serial or how to sign it."" Despite his confinement Nerval continues to conduct his business: ""Je conçois un projet ou système d'emprunt qui a quelques chances de réussite - mais il faut que j'engage très sérieusement ma signature."" ""I am conceiving a project or loan system that has some chances of success - but I must very seriously commit my signature."" After two violent nervous breakdowns Gérard de Nerval was compelled to stay at Dr. Blanche's clinic between March and November 1841. Unfolded envelope attached showing several postal stamps restored on the back with an adhesive piece. A few transverse creases as well as some very discrete holes not touching the text and inherent to the use of a pin to seal the letter. Fine letter from Gérard Labrunie to his ""dear papa"" about a ""very complicated affair"" relating to the ""capacity as surrogate guardian"" of the writer's father. Rouy the sum of 10F on account. Gérard. This 27th"". Daniel Rouy was manager and cashier of the newspaper La Presse. Two transverse crease marks. This acknowledgment of debt simply dated ""ce 7"" ""this 7th"" could have been written in August 1849 if one refers to a letter to Ernesta Grisi companion of his friend Théophile Gautier in which the poet mentions such a debt: ""Je n'ai pu toucher l'argent qu'aujourd'hui mercredi. M. Rouy n'y était pas. J'y suis allé 4 fois aujourd'hui."" ""I was only able to collect the money today Wednesday. M. Rouy was not there. I went there 4 times today."" Pléiade volume 1 letter 143 of August 30 1849. However Michel Brix author of Nerval Glanes et miettes de presse and member of the Royal Academy of French Language and Literature of Belgium has very kindly pointed out to us that Nerval signed ""Gérard"" rather between 1837 and 1840 and that in 1849 he signed this kind of note ""Gérard de Nerval"". unknown

Paris 11 février 1844 10.40 x 13.60 cm quatre pages sur deux feuillets Three autograph letters signed by Gérard de Nerval 2 pages signed «Gérard» Théophile Gautier 1 page and a third unsigned letter 1 page penned by a certain «Robert» cf. Nerval's letter Louis Desessart Théophile Gautier's appointed publisher co-published Nervals play Léo Burckart with Barba in 1839. Following financial difficulties he was forced to take refuge «in that sad and charming city of Brussels». The three friends wrote this letter from Paris where they had reunited following Nervals long journey to the East: «I spent six months in Egypt; then three months in Syria four months in Constantinople and the rest en route. Its quite beautiful. I only enjoy myself while traveling and try to live twice as much as I can.» This journey deeply impressed Théophile Gautier who would only travel to Turkey and Egypt years later: «I am in Paris and wish I were in Cairo from where Gérard is returning.» The exoticism of distant lands starkly contrasts with the melancholy and severity of Europe: «How sad Paris is when one returns from sunlit countries.» Nerval And in Paris far from dreams of escape life means toil and melancholy: «We are like sick people who are never comfortable anywhere. I think the good times are gone and the golden hours of the past when we spoke such wise follies will never return. Whats the point of living if we must work and cannot see our friends or write to them or do anything we would like» Gautier The two writers express great compassion for their friends Belgian exile with Brussels appearing as the capital of spleen: «What! Youre still in that sad and charming city of Brussels! . Brussels is even darker poor fellow!» Nerval This joint letter was in fact initiated by «Robert»: «Isnt it true my dear friend that Im quite skilled at making you forget my faults . as a way of making it up to you Im sending you the autographs of two of your . comrades your fondest memories two men of fame who despite all their affection and friendship for you would never have written a word had I not trimmed their quills and handed them paper like sulky children and told them: write at once at once to the exile you love most.» unknown

Mounting traces on verso. On a 3¼" X 3/4" slip tipped to the center of this heavy card Gerardy boldly pens several measures of music not identified but from the "Cello Concerto"; above this slip he then writes "concerto Saint Saens" and below the slip he notes "Un souvenir le / Jean Gerardy / le 21/1 1906." Penned by Gerber during his years in Leipzig as a law student and cellist in the Leipzig orchestra. - Gerber, musical instructor of the children of the Prince of Sondershausen, succeeded his father as court organist and court secretary in 1775. - Some browning, with a large brownstain.

To an unidentified recipient, elaborating on the English law of land ownership, in particular the difference between freehold and copyhold: "[...] Erlauben Sie mir Ihre Frage in folgenden Punkten kurz zu beantworten, soweit ich es augenblicklich ohne weitere Studien vermag. I. Der oberste Unterschied des Grundeigenthums in England ist: Freisassengüter (freehold) und Grundbuchgüter (copyhold). Jene sind nach unserem Sprachgebrauch eigentlich Allodialgüter; frei von irgend einer dinglichen Belastung (denn der englische Satz, daß alles Gundeigenthum im Lehnsobereigenthum des Königs stehe, umfasst zwar auch die Freisassengüter, ist aber eine bloß theoretische Fiktion ohne irgend hervortretende praktische Wirkung). In einem großen Theile von England ist dies der rechtliche Charakter der größeren Güter; man hat nach und nach dahin gestrebt, eine Bewirtschaftung zu ermöglichen, die in der Zertheilung der Herrschaft in einzelne Pachthöfe besteht, welche lediglich nach der Grundsätzen des Zeitpachtes verliehen sind [...]". - As vice chancellor (and since 1856 as chancellor) of the University of Tübingen, Gerber also served as a representative in the Wuerttemberg diet from 1851 to 1862. - Traces of folds. An Monsieur Blanq in Neapel mit der Mitteilung, daß die Prinzessin Zénaïde Wolkonsky gerne seine Bekanntschaft machen würde und es außerordentlich bedaure, daß die Villa Lucia, in der sie wohne, nicht in der Nähe seines Viertels sei. Sie beauftrage ihn, Gerbet, nun, ihm zu bestellen, daß sie am Donnerstag ab halb vier Uhr ganz sicher anzutreffen sei. Er selbst sei ihm sehr verbunden, wenn er ihm ihre durch den Duc de Guise in Neapel während der Revolte gegen die Spanier geknüpfte Freundschaft so herzlich bekunde: "La princesse Zénaïde Wolkonsky, qui désire beaucoup faire votre connaissance, regrette que la villa Lucia, qu'elle habite, ne soit pas à proximité du quartier où vous demeurez […] elle me charge de vous dire qu'on est sûr de la trouver chez elle le jeudi, à partir de 3 heures et demie […] Vous m'obligeriez beaucoup si vous pourriez me prouver, pour quelques jours, la relation faite par le Duc de Guise de son expédition à Naples, lors de la révolte contre les Espagnols [...]" (Br. v. 4. VI.). - Der Brief v. 5. IV. mit der Frage, ob Blanq ihm einen Band einer Französischen Geschichte leihen könne, der die Regentschaft Lothars und das Ende der karolingischen Herrschaft enthalte: "Monsier Blanq, pourrait-il me prêter, pour quelques jours, un volume d'une histoire de France quelquonque, contenant le règne de Lothaire et la fin de la Dynastie carlovingienne? [...]". - Beide Briefe etwas unfrisch; ein Brief mit kleinem Ausr. im Adreßblatt durch Siegelbruch (dieses tlw. erhalten; keine Textberührung).

"Mercredi"). - Beide Briefe minimal fleckig, die Adreßblätter jeweils mit Siegelresten.
