[...]". - Ainslie reacting to a letter received by Miss Lyle's friend's grandson that contains news of an insurrection in Demerara (British Guyana) writes "[...] rendering his friends my enemies on account of the insubordination of the Negroes there [...]". - On August 1, 1834, the law abolishing slavery throughout the British Empire took effect. Also included is a 102:102 mm partially printed form with "Name 'ROBERT AINSLIE' / Profession 'CLERGYMAN' and Date 'Oct. 4, 1834'", entered in ink, and mounted on a card. Ainslie, Whitelaw, British surgeon (1767-1837).
Autograph letter signed ("Whitelaw Ainslie"). Cairnbank near Dunse (Berwickshire), 3 Nov. 1833.
4to. 2½ pp. on bifolium. An amusing and detailed letter to John Kenyon (1784-1856) from St Peter's College, Cambridge: "You should have had an earlier reply to your kind letter, but the fact is, I have been moving about, and it and its much prized accompaniment only reached me a few days ago; accept my best thanks, my good friend, for both; the latter has not only surprised but delighted me. I say, surprised, because I did not know you had a single acre of land on Parnassus, & behold you turn out to be a rich proprietor. To be serious I have read your Poem with great pleasure, not only because it possesses much Poetic merit, but because it is something new 'in his temporibus' and carries one back to the days of Pope, and other 'Reasoners in Rhyme' - 'When sense to fancy near, like light and shade / Each chasing each, their due succession made.' Poetry must at all times be much under the influence of imagination, but of late years it has been too much so, and that is one powerful cause why it has, as an object of literature, got a good deal into the background. But let us hope that under your instrumentality, the Muses may be wooed in a different strain, from that in which they have lately been sought [...] It is commonly said that at a certain age the Nine begin to look cool on their 'old worshipers', and that they do not like grey-headed old fellows in fact: under this impression it was that I lately took a somewhat formal leave of them, in an address which you shall see when we next meet. Whether they will have anything more to do with me, I know not; thus much I do know, that several of them are rank Quoquets - as for Thalaia, I believe her to be no better than she should be: but pray do not you tell her so, next time you meet as I should not like her to cut me, altogether, bad as she is. Mrs. Ainslie and myself have for a short time been at this place in Berwickshire, it belongs to my brother, and is in the heart of a fine shooting, hunting, and fishing country, but these are amusements I now partake of with great moderation, and do not think I shall like Somerville write a Chase, or like Sir Humphrey Davy, give to the world a work on Salmon fishing. Our weather gets bleak, and I have taken a strange fancy to an 'easy' chair not far from the fire side, and which gives me the light at my back, in the most agreeable manner you can imagine. We prepare as usual wintering in Edinburgh, and I think it probable that I may take a run up to London in the Spring [...]". - Sir Whitelaw Ainslie served as a surgeon in the East India Company for almost thirty years and wrote the first English monograph on Indian Medicine ("Materia Medica of Hindostan", 1813). - The classicist John Kenyon, who had long dabbled in poetry, published his "Poems: for the most part occasional" in 1838. The collection was received by critics as being in the mould of Pope and Cowper. The verses quoted in the letter are from Kenyon's "Rhymed plea for tolerance in two dialogues", to be published in 1839.

AINSWORTH Frederick Crayton 1852 1934
Document Signed
This U.S. Army officer wielded great influence while in charge of the Record and Pension Division of the Surgeon General's Office in the 1880s stremalining and modernizing it and later 1892-1904 as chief of the Record and Pension Office of the War Department; in 1899 he was promoted to brigadier general and in 1904 to major general; publication of the mammoth 100 volume "The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies 1880-1901" better known as the "O.R." was his responsibility. Partly-printed DS 1p 10" X 8" Washington DC 1896 July 9. Very good. Mild bit of edgewear. Rather cryptic and bureaucratic Record and Pension Office form enquiring about the whereabouts of one William E. Few of Company "K" of the 8th New York Volunteer Cavalry in the spring of 1865 followed by a finding that Few enrolled on 23 March 1865 and on 30 April 1865 was in Bladensburg Maryland and finally on 6 June 1865 was in Alexandria Virginia. Signed at the conclusion boldly by Ainsworth in black ink as chief of office of the U.S. Army. unknown

Will you permit me, as you express an interest in the countries where I have spent seven years of my life, to forward you a small tract in favour of the Claims of Oriental Christians to our kindly feelings and assistance [...]". - Small marginal tear, not touching text. Airy, Sir George Biddell, English mathematician and astronomer (1801-1892).
Autograph letter signed ("G. B. Airy"). Greenwich, London, 14. IV. 1836.
8vo. 1 p. on bifolium. A letter addressed to Michael Faraday, FRS, by the seventh Astronomer Royal, G. B Airy, from the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, on behalf of his First Assistant Robert Main, who is "extremely desirous of hearing the lecture of tomorrow evening". Airy thus asks Faraday, "Would it be convenient to you to send me a card of admission for him?". - Robert Main (1808-78), elder brother of the mathematician Thomas John Main, graduated in 1834 as sixth wrangler from Queens' College, Cambridge, and served for twenty-five years (1835-60) as First Assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, publishing numerous articles, particularly on stellar and planetary motion, stellar parallax, and the dimensions and shapes of the planets. From 1841 to 1861 he was successively an honorary secretary, a vice-president, and President of the Royal Astronomical Society. In 1860 he became director of Radcliffe Observatory at Oxford University and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. An ordained priest of the Church of England, he preached regularly while living in Greenwich. - One light yellow stain and faint browning to the edges. The final page has pencil markings, some finger-staining and one tear to the upper left-hand corner. A poignant piece of evidence for the eagnerness among scientists in the first half of the eighteenth century to gain access to Faraday's innovative work on electromagnetism and electrochemistry.

Airy, Sir George Biddell, Mathematiker und Astronom (1801-1892).
Eigenh. Brief mit U. (in dritter Person). Cambridge Observatory, 4. XI. 1829.
1 S. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Mit eh. Adresse und Siegelresten verso (Faltbrief). An den deutschen Astronomen und (ehemaligen) Leiter der Sternwarte im australischen Parramatta, Carl Rümker: "Professor Airy presents his compliments to Mr. Rumker, and begs to inform him that he lately saw M. Carlini of Milan [d. i. der italienische Astronom und Geodät Francesco Carlini], who is at present employed in improving the lunar tables, both by extending the theoretical investigations, and by comparing the tables with his own observations. Professor Airy was charged by M. Carlini, in case he should have an opportunity of communicating with Mr. Rumker, to request that on his return to Paramatta he would carefully observe the Moon's declination whenever it was possible. The accurate determination of parallax is necessary for several of M. Carlini's investigations, and this appears the most satisfactory of all methods for its determination [...]".
