Hofbibliothek befindlichen Werke 'Gedenkblätter aus der Geschichte des Österreichischen Heeres von Quirin Leitner - ich habe dasselbe seinerzeit gezeichnet und möchte nun gerne eine freie Copie davon machen, um mich mit der hieraus entstehenden Zeichnung an dem von der Verbindung für historische Kunst ausgeschriebenen Concourse zur Erlangung eines Auftrages auf dem Gebiethe der Geschichtsmalerei zu betheiligen [...]". - Sigmund l´Allemand, der Neffe und Schüler von Friedrich l´Allemand, studierte an der Wiener Akademie bei Karl von Blaas und war später Professor daselbst. Als "beliebter Porträtist des Kaiserhauses, des Hochadels und der Generalität" (DBE), schuf l´Allemand zudem auch Schlachtenbilder u. a. aus dem Dänischen Krieg. - Mit einer mehrzeiligen Notiz des Adressaten sowie einem weiteren Vermerk eines Beamten in Tinte.

64 Bll., davon 89 SS. mit Skizzen und Zeichnungen (davon 4 doppelblattgroß bzw. in die gegenüberliegende Seite hineinreichend), die Vorsätze gleichfalls mit Skizzen. Grün-blauer Leinenband mit goldgepr. Deckeltitel "Notes", goldgepr. Umschlaglasche, 1 Einsteckfach und Stifthalterung. Kl.-8vo (Blattgröße 123 x 74 mm). Stempel "Nachlass Sig. L'Allemand". Mit einer Beilage. Das vorliegende Skizzenbuch enthält vorwiegend Ansichten von Häusern, Kirchen, Dörfern, Kuppen und Landschaften, daneben aber auch eine Anzahl von architektonischen Detailstudien (Dächer, Pilaster, Fenster, Torbögen), mehrere Portraits (ein Klosterbruder, ein Frauenkopf und ein Polizeibeamter oder Soldat) sowie Skizzen von Pferden, Hirschen und einem Löwenkopf. - Auf den ersten Seiten finden sich teils englischsprachige Notizen, aus denen nicht deutlich wird, ob es sich um die Stationen einer Reise handelt, da nur zwei Bewegungen vermerkt werden ("Bridge of Stein […] we arrived there at half past two" und "Sunday the 19th left Linz on bo[a]rd oft he Bavarian steamer 'Queen Mary'"), sonst aber nur Aufzeichnungen anderer Art über Städte und dort Ansässige. Vermerkt sind Salzburg ("Gablerbräu" und "Untersberg"), Graz ("Mariahilf Josefigasse 132 St. Jacob"), München ("Gasthof zum Ober Pollinger Karlsthor - München", "Franziskaner vis à vis der Post", "Schellingstraße No 12"), Walhalla ("248 Stufen Steinmetz Meister Baumgartner") und Nürnberg ("Rössel Gasthaus"). Weiters finden sich darin einige Sinnsprüche ("Wandrer! steh hier still / Und weil ein Wenig hier / Sieh Deiner Reise Ziel / Das bleibt von allem Dir"; "Ohne Trennung kein Wiedersehen / Ohne Tod kein Auferstehen"; "Auf und nieder geht der Eimer / Und die Krüge sind gefüllt; / Doch das Plaudern nimmt kein Ende / Wann wird Neugier je gestillt"; "Ich bin eine Jungfrau wohlgestalt / Und wen ich küß, der wird nicht alt"; "Es eilt das Kind mit leichtem Herzen / Durch seines Daseins sel'ges Glück, / Und läßt dabey von seinen Füßchen / Im Sand kaum eine Spur zurück"; "Dem Jüngling ist das Herz schon schwer / Er trägt noch andre Herzen mit - / Und tiefer drücken sich die Spuren / Im Staube ab bei jedem Schritt") und auf den letzten Bll. eine dreiseitige trivialphilosophisch anmutende Betrachtung ("Gibt es nicht mehr Dinge im Himmel und auf Erden als sich unsere Filosofie träumen läßt? Ein Geist waltet vielleicht in der Luft die wir athmen; die Tiefe unserer Geheimsten Einsamkeit kann von unsichtbaren Wesen bevölkert sein [...]". - Bindung stellenweise gelockert, einige wenige Bll. lose; der Einband abgegriffen und stellenweise leicht angeplatzt. - Beiliegend eine getuschte Bleistiftzeichnung (200 x 115 mm, eine Mutter mit ihrem Kind); etwas angestaubt und fleckig.

One of the last of the singing cowboys known as "Mister Cowboy" and "The Arizona Cowboy" Allen starred in cowboy films of the 1950s and is credited with composing 300 songs among them "Crying in the Chapel" 1953. Uncommon glossy oversize IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" Kankakee IL 1961. Very good. Image is superb and unflawed but ink contrast is good only. Handsome head-and-shoulders closeup of a smiling Allen in plaid shirt scarf and white ten-gallon hat inscribed enormously in the light area above his hat in blue ballpoint: "To Donald / My Best Always / Rex Allen / 1961 / 'Kankakee.'" Very attractive and unusual despite mediocre ink contrast -- likely created for some cryptic promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso. Choice vintage piece probably one of a kind in this large format. Striking display item. unknown

Nice half-length portrait of Allen in ornate beaded Indian buckskin shirt fondly caressing his favorite horse's head. Nicely inscribed and signed in blue fountain pen in a light area at upper left: "'To Don' / Our illegible / Rex Allen / and / Ko Ko." Despite slight flaw a nice vintage example from one of the last of the singing cowboys. unknown

This American lawyer is best known as the author of popular adventures tales for young adults such as "Silver Rags" 1886 and as editor 1881-93 of "The Cottage Hearth" "The Wellspring" and "Our Sunday Afternoon." AMS 1p 5�" X 7" n.p. n.y. minuscule pencilled 1922 December 17 in another hand. Near fine. Boyd boldly pens a poem titled "Sunrise" in black ink eight lines of verse reading: "Age calls us not to grieve our lives away / With sombre face turned toward the setting sun; / But as the Alpine guide at break of day / Surmounts the rugged foothills one by one / Leaving the waning shadows of the night / To meet the radiant dawn but just begun / Bids us fare onward upward toward the light / Climbing into the sunrise on the height." Handsomely accomplished with large margins. Boyd published one volume of poetry "In the Morning" 1890 but "Sunrise" is not included in that collection and it is unknown whether this piece ever appeared in print. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Johannsen's original 8�" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. unknown

"Daneben widmete er sich auch der Musik und studierte an einem Wiener Konservatorium. Bereits während dieser Zeit komponierte und textete er seine ersten Wienerlieder und wienerischen Tanzstücke, einer Sparte, der er Zeit seines Lebens treu blieb. In der Folge etablierte sich Allmeder vor allem als Textautor und Schriftsteller, schrieb zahlreiche Liedertexte für die Volkssängerin Hansi Führer sowie für alle führenden Komponisten des Genres, u. a. für Edmund Eysler, Ludwig Gruber, Rudolf Kronegger, Roman Domanig-Roll, Heinrich Strecker" (Österreichisches Musiklexikon, s. v., Abbreviaturen aufgelöst). 1921 war Allmeder zusammen mit Ludwig Gruber Mitbegründer der Gesellschaft zur Hebung und Förderung der Wiener Volkskunst.

Pair of Signed Cards
She was the blonde-banged husky-voiced "girl next door" was a popular leading lady throughout the '40s and '50s; he was the freckled red-haired American golden boy of numerous films of the 1940s and '50s -- most memorably "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" 1944 and "The Caine Mutiny" 1954 -- continued appearing in films and on television into the 1980s. Pair of signed heavy stock cards each 4�" X 3" n.p. n.y. Very good. Faint and inoffensive 2�" tape stain evident along top and bottom 1/8" of each card. "Naval Aid Auxiliary" logo in gilt blue and red appears at top center with red stripe along top �" edge and blue stripe along bottom �" edge. This organization raised funds for its war-time activities by enlisting many film stars to sign these decorative cards which were then made available for purchase to the public. A desirable pair of these young stars paired together in five films around this same time. unknown

Autograph Letter Signed
This Rhode Islander came from a line of military officers -- including his brother John Jay 1815-95 noted naval officer. ALS 2pp recto and verso 7" X 8" New London CT 1858 December 3. Addressed to "Doct. Duffield" D. Bethune Duffield 1821-91 well known scholar and poet. Good plus. Binding traces along left margin; chip at lower left corner not affecting text; some fold separations archivally mended on verso side. Overall clean quite legible and not unattractive despite condition. On September 10 1858 the 45th anniversary of the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie fought largely by Rhode Islanders on the American side was commemorated with many celebrations taking place in Detroit. Here Almy writes to one of the participants in these ceremonies: "We had the great pleasure in September last of reading in the New York Times many extracts from your very grand & elegant Poem delivered in that month on the ever memorable anniversary of Perry's gallant achievement on Lake Erie." Almy asks for a copy of Duffield's poem noting "We do want it exceedingly. I am myself a real genuine Rhode Islander -- proud of my State & of the glorious men who have given it its reputation. I have in my parlor a very fine likeness of the Hero of Erie and besides recollect his personal appearance well. I saw him receive the welcome of our native town Newport on his return from Erie. And now Sir will you do us the favor to furnish us with your whole Poem. If it is published in pamphlet form we hope you will pardon us for asking for 2 copies as we want one for my Brother who is a Lt. in the Navy & who was delighted with what he read of your brilliant effort." Interestingly the sailing master of the brig "Somers" one of Perry's fleet was a Rhode Islander named Thomas C. Almy -- likely a relative of William E. An intriguing piece. unknown

Februar 1865 des als oberste Militär-Gerichtsbehörde eingesetzten obersten Militär-Justizsenates des Verbrechens des Hochverrathes schuldig erkannt und nebst Adelsverlust im Wege des Rechtes zum Tode durch den Strang, im Wege der Gnade zu zwanzigjährigem schweren Kerker verurtheilt" (Wurzbach XXII, 461). - Etwas angestaubt, sonst gut erhalten.

He began his musical career in 1960 and has experimented with a number of styles, from romantic folk to rock. He also has covered a number of French and Italian songs. Alpay is best known for his hit songs "Eylülde Gel" and "Fabrika Kizi".
