4to. 2 pp. Charming letter in French to his friend, the Swiss architect Alfred Roth (1903-98), thanking him for sympathetic feedback to Mondrian's unpublished text "L'Art nouveau - La Vie nouvelle" and asking for the return of the manuscript. Roth and other friends of Mondrian's like the German-Swiss art historian Carola Giedion-Welcker and the Swedish sociologist Sven Bäcklund had offered to finance the publication, but Mondrian insists that he wants to wait until he can afford it himself through the sale of paintings: "I was delighted by your letter and your appreciation, and that of the other friends gives me tremendous joy. You have very well noticed the essential: my imperturbable faith in the future, in human evolution. All the beauty of life is in there - isn't it? - I further appreciate the efforts and intentions of the friends to find the necessary means for publication but I do not wish to incommode (especially in these times) my friends or even acquaintances for a favour [chose utile]. I prefer to wait until I sell enough to cover the costs myself. Tell this to Giedion and Backlund. The publication is not so urgent. I improve my little work from time to time. For that reason, I would like to have my manuscripts back because I found some things in there that are not well or precisely expressed. But if you know and tell it to the friends you can keep them a bit longer. If Seuphor's 'Éditions nouvelles' continue to exist, they produce affordable and good editions. After all, I believe that an independent publication will be better than through Geneva. I was astonished to hear that this Spanish architect, whom I personally do not know, did not send the information. I will discuss that with my friend, the Spaniard. In my painting I make good progress. The material outlook is still poor. For everyone!" - Mondrian had worked on the book since 1929 and started to look for a publisher in 1932. It is not known whether Mondrian ever negotiated with the Belgian artist and publisher Michel Seuphor (1901-99), who was stylistically influenced by Mondrian and wrote an early biography of the master in 1956. In 1938 Mondrian finally abandoned the project, though the text was published posthumously. In a short postscript to the letter, Mondrian announces a new introduction to the book, which is also included in Louis Veen's 2017 edition of Mondrian's writings. - Traces of folds. To Winnaretta Singer, Princess of Scey-Montbéliard, about the purchase of Manet's "Olympia" from his widow, in order to offer it to the Louvre. - Asking her for the sum of 2,000 francs, the subscription agreed on, so that he can transfer all of the subscriptions to Manet's widow: "Devant prendre possession de l'Olympia, et remettre ces jours ci le montant des souscriptions à Madame Manet je viens vous prier de bien vouloir me faire parvenir, le plus tôt possible, le montant de votre souscription (2000 F) que vous m'avez chargé d'inscrire sous votre nom [...]" (16 Feb. 1890). - Confirming receipt of the funds and thanking her for her contribution, not yet daring to believe in the successful realisation of the project, which he expects to be met with hatred and stupidity, pointing out that in case the museum administration should "commit the foolish mistake" of refusing the painting, it would at least remain in their possession: "Chère Madame, je vous accuse reception et vous remercie de votre envoi de Deux-mille francs pour votre souscription à l'achat de l'Olympia de Manet. Je n'ose espérer encore un succès de l'entreprise (car il faut compter avec la haine et l'imbécilité courante) mais quoi qu'il arrive le tableau nous restera acquit pour être remis à l'état en temps opportun, si l'administration actuelle commet la bêtise de le refuser [...]" (20 Feb. 1890). - It was Monet who took the initiative in 1889 to launch a subscription to buy "Olympia" from Manet's widow, in order to offer it to the Louvre. In March 1890, he was able to buy the painting from Suzanne Manet for 19,415 francs, and the painting entered the Musée du Luxembourg, despite the reluctance of the administration; it is now in the Musée d'Orsay. The wealthy Winnaretta Singer, then Princess of Scey-Montbéliard, and future Princess of Polignac, was the principal donor, with 2,000 francs.

To the writer Stéphane Mallarmé, thanking for a copy of the "Ten o'clock" manifesto by the American poet and painter James McNeill Whistler, which had appeared in Mallarmé's translation in "La Revue indépendante" in May 1888, and well as in an offprint. On Whistler's behalf Monet requests Mallarmé to mail a copy to the sculptor Jean-Joseph Carriès, and hopes soon to welcome him in Giverny, along with the painter Berthe Morisot and her husband Eugène Manet: - "Merci pour l'envoi du Ten o'clock de Whistler et de l'amicale dédicace. Je voulais justement vous écrire Whistler m'ayant chargé de vous prier d'en adresser une épreuve au sclupteur [!] Carriès [...] Vous savez que je conserve l'espoir de vous avoir une journée ici avec Mr et Mme Manet [...]" (postmark: 5 June 1866). - To the same, glad to hear that he likes his paintings, expressing his anger at the silence and injustice with which his friend Edouard Manet is regarded, and concluding with a request for news of Whistler: "Je suis bien content que mes tableaux vous plaisent les éloges venant d'un artiste comme vous, cela fait plaisir. Oui ce pauvre Manet m'aimait bien, mais nous la lui rendons bien cette amitié et je suis exaspéré du silence et de l'injustice de tous pour sa mémoire et son grand talent [...] Avez vous des nouvelles de Whistler et revient-il bientôt?" (postmark: 19 June 1866). - A few small marginal tears along the folds.

To a Mr. Durolles, probably an official at the Ministry of Defence, concerning the conscriptions of Monet's son Michel (1878-1966) and his stepson Jean-Pierre Hoschedé (1877-1961). With regard to Michel, Monet first informs his contact that he was transferred to the "Commis et ouvriers militaires" and that he can now do what is necessary to transfer Michel to Vernon, close to Giverny: "J'apprends ici que mon fils Michel a obtenu son changement de 7ptme de Ligue à la 3me section de commis et ouvriers militaires. Je me hate de vous en informer, comme vous m'y avez autorisé afin que vous pourriez de suite faire le necessaire pour le faire placer à Vernon, ce qui sera le comble de nos vœux, aussi je en ai pas besoin de vous dire combien nous vous en serons reconnaissante [...]" (Jan. 1901, recipient's note). - In the second letter from 26 February 1901, Claude Monet explains that Michel has received information that he will be retransferred to Rouen. Monet asks the recipient to make Michel's posting in Vernon permanent before the transfer to Rouen becomes official: "Je viens encore faire appel à votre aimable obligeance. Mon fils Michel qui grâce à vous a été envoyé à Vernon, et ou il se trouve très bien, a appris officieusement par un camarade qui est employé à la direction de Rouen, qu'il était question de le faire revenir à Rouen, parce que l'on vient d'envoyer un autre soldat à Vernon et par ce fait il y a un homme de plus à l'effectif de cette ville. Cela n'est pas officiel mais pourrait le devenir, mon fils en a la crainte et me demande à vous écrire afin d'user de votre influence pour le faire classer définitivement à Vernon. Si ce n'est abuser de votre obligeance je vous serais bien vivement reconnaissant d'intervenir auprès de votre collègue de Rouen. Vous demandant de bien vouloir le faire le plustot [!] possible avant que la chose ne devienne officiel [!]. Tous mes remerciments [...]". Both letters were sent from London, where Claude Monet stayed in 1901. - Regarding his stepson Jean-Pierre Hoschedé, Monet informs Durolles that the former minister Léon Bourgeois had successfully intervened on Jean-Pierre's behalf so that he would be allowed to continue his studies in Paris before being drafted: "J'apprends à l'instant par Monsieur Léon Bourgeois l'ancien Ministre qui porte beaucoup d'intérêt à mon beaufils que sur sa demande et dans le but de lui procurer plus de temps à ses études, il vient d'obtenir qu'il soit détaché au Ministère de la guerre. Je m'empresse de vous en informer au cas ou vous ne le sauriez deja et je tiens à vous remercier encore de votre obligeante sollicitude à son egard [...]" (13 April 1899). - Michel Monet and Jean-Pierre Hoschedé grew up like siblings since the Hoschedé family had moved to live with the Monets in Vétheuil in 1878. Alice Hoschedé took care of Monet's first wife Camille, who suffered from terminal cancer, and the eight children. Camille died in 1879, and Ernest Hoschedé soon left the household, only visiting sporadically and later unsuccessfully asking his wife to return to him. In 1883 the family moved to Giverny and in 1892, one year after Ernest Hoschedé's death, Claude Monet and Alice married. - Letter from 13 April 1899 on mourning stationery with letterhead; the other two letters on stationery with embossed letterhead of the Savoy Hotel, London. 8vo. 1 p. on bifolium. In purple ink. To the painter Jacques-Émile Blanche (1861-1942), concerning the collective purchase of Édouard Manets famous "Olympia". Monet confirms the receipt of 500 francs from Blanche's father, the renowned psychiatrist Anotine Émile Blanche: "Je vous accuse réception de la somme de cinq cents francs, que Monsieur votre père m'a envoyé pour votre souscription à l'achat de l'Olympia de Manet [...]". - In 1888, Monet had learned from John Singer Sargent that Manet's widow Suzanne was experiencing financial difficulties and hence was negotiating to sell the "Olympia" to an American collector. In order to preserve the scandalous painting for the French public, he started a subscription among his friends and other benefactors, including Edgar Degas, Joris-Karl Huysmans, Stéphane Mallarmé, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Antonin Proust, Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir, and John Singer Sargent. Ultimately, Monet successfully offered 19,415 francs to Suzanne Manet in March 1890 and donated the painting to the Louvre. Today, Manet's masterpiece is on display at the Musée d'Orsay. - Ink somewhat smudged, but well preserved. With collector's mark in pencil.

In French, to the art critic Arsène Alexandre about the difficult negotiations that led to the donation of Monet's Water Lilies to the French State: "Dear Mr. Alexandre, I answer your letter immediately and want to tell you that you misunderstood me. What I said to you during your visit is agreed. About the gift I want to make to the State, and about the work you agreed to do for Mr. Bernheim, but I was wrong to let myself go at a time of discouragement and misunderstood in the nervous state I was in. Believe me, I only asked you to give me a few days of respite in order to take advantage of the few beautiful days we have. Finally to save the few paintings that I have undertaken but I see and regret infinitely that you have misunderstood my intentions. I ask you again, give me a few days and we can talk usefully again. Believe in my best feelings [...]" (transl.). - Arsène Alexandre, who was a civil servant at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts at the time, was one of the first officials to contact Monet for his donation.

To his friend, the journalist and critic Gustave Geoffroy, confirming a meeting in the offices of La Justice and asking him to talk to Georges Clemenceau beforehand, concerning a possible prolongation of a pause of the military service of his eldest son Jean: "J'ai votre lettre et vous confirme ma venue pour jeudi entre 6 et 6½ à la justice, mais je voudrais-bien que vous puissiez parler avant cela à Clemenceau pour l'affaire de mon fils. Il n'est que temps d'agir et parlez dans le sens que je vous ai dit. L'enfant, comme dit Clemenceau, se trouve très bien en sa nouvelle situation chez mon frère qui souhaite bien pouvoir le garder avec lui. Dites bien, vous, à Clemenceau de faire tout son possible pour cela". - Jean Monet (1867-1914) started working as a chemist in the dye company of his uncle Léon Monet in Rouen in 1891, when his military service was not yet completed but paused. George Clemenceau, then member of the Chamber of Deputies and a great admirer of Claude Monet's art, had already helped to prolong Jean's pause selveral times. However, on 1 April 1891, Monet informed Geoffroy that Jean had left them to complete his military service, following a medical examination in Rouen. He resumed his position as a chemist in Léon Monet's factory in 1892. Georges Clemenceau and Claude Monet would become intimate friends a few years later. - Traces of folds. 8vo. 1¾ pp. on bifolium. To an unidentified public servant, informing him of an appointment with Paul Léon, the director of the l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and his notary in Giverny. The meeting relates to Monet's donation of the Water Lilies series to the French state: "Je vous informe que je reçois ce matin une lettre de Mr. Paul Léon m'annonçant sa venue avec son notaire pour Mercredi prochain 12CT entre 2 et 3es à Giverny et que votre confrère doit s'entendre avec vous pour cette rencontre à Giverny laquelle rencontre je pense, sera suivie de la signature de l'acte à votre cabinet. [...]". - As early as 1918 Monet had offered the monumental paintings he had been working on since 1914 to the state, but negotiations proved difficult. Monet's biggest supporter in the government was Georges Clemenceau, who made possible the construction of the two oval rooms designated for the paintings in the Orangerie. The exhibition finally opened to the public on 16 May 1927, a few months after Monet's death. - Some browning. On stationery with embossed letterhead "Giverny par Vernon. Eure".

Si donc vous pourriez faire sans moi pour vendredi vous m'obligeriez infiniment et aussitot mon affaire conclue je vous envoi les fonds [...]". - Well preserved. With dating (recto) and a calculation (verso) in pencil, probably by the recipient.

Teilnachlass eines nicht ermittelten österreichischen Künstlers, bestehend aus 50 Holz- und Linolschnitten mit topographischen Ansichten sowie Gebrauchsgraphiken. Verschiedene Orte (u. a. Salzburg), 1900-1925.
Holzschnitte (teils koloriert) und Linolschnitte auf Japanpapier, Bütten und Schreibpapier. Verschiedene Formate. Die teils in mehreren Abzügen vorliegenden Graphiken bestehen aus einigen Gebrauchsgraphiken (Exlibris und Vignetten) und vor allem topographischen Blättern, von denen Ansichten der Festung Hohensalzburg von uns identifizierbar waren. Einige Blätter liegen in Probedrucken vor, die mehrere Zustände erkennen lassen. Die Blätter sind von einem für uns nicht ermittelbaren Künstler (Monogramm DW oder CW) in den beiden ersten Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts ausgeführt und weisen - sieht man von einigen Jugendwerken ab - ihren Schöpfer als geübten Meister der Holzschneidekunst aus.

Ausr. durch Siegelbruch: dieses vollständig erhalten und ohne Textberührung). - Monro war Professor für Anatomie und Chirurgie in Edinburg und Verfasser zahlreicher anatomischer, medizinischer und chirurgischer Schriften. - Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot gründete 1848 den "Konstitutionell-monarchistischen Verein"; als sich die angestrebte Gründung einer patriotischen Partei nicht verwirklichen ließ, zog er sich jedoch aus der aktiven Politik zurück. Seit 1868 Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina, wurde er 1872 Vorsitzender des Komitees zur Gründung des Sophienspitals in Wien; daneben war Vivenot Direktor des Unterstützungsvereins für Witwen und Waisen des medizinischen Doktor-Collegiums. - In altem Sammlungsumschlag.

This popular soprano from the early days of radio sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at so many World War Two bond rallies that one wit quipped she should be admitted as the 49th state in the union. Signed Program 8vo 5�" X 8�" 4pp n.p. n.y. 27 November 1939 typed at top. Very good. Light edgewear original light folds and faint mounting traces on middle third of rear wrapper. A clean and nice program on light orange stock for Monroe's appearance at the "Community Concert Association" listing a lengthy program that includes songs by Handel Haydn Debussy Faure Gounod Puccini and a few others. Monroe signs boldly in blue ink in a blank are at upper left. Her accompanist well-known pianist Frederick Bristol 1897-1974 also signs boldly in ink beneath her. Inner page 2 contains a biography of Monroe and "Annotations" pp. 3 and 4 for each composition played. unknown

8vo. Together 6 pp. Correspondence with Alfred de Beauchesne (1804-74), secretary at the Paris Conservatory. The collection includes two letters of introduction for young applicants for the declamation classes at the conservatory, a request for two tickets for a performance, and a letter wherein Talbot asks Beauchesne to pass on two letters, an unspecified response with the remark that "it is, however necessary to see" the actors Jules Boucher, Suzanne Reichenberg, and an unidentified third person. In the longest letter of the collection, Talbot asks Beauchesne to give him the names and addresses of those candidates who did not pass the entrance examination. Apparently, he offered preparatory acting classes. Two letters are dated to 1861 by a collector's hand. This would indicate that Talbot was very active as a teacher well before he left the Comédie-Française in 1873 to start an acting school at the théâtre de la Tour d'Auvergne. - Traces of folds and some browning overall. A letter starting "Je vous serai bien obligé de faire inscrire le petit note ci-contre" somewhat faded.

This French journalist and politician founded the journal "L'Avenir" in 1830 and from 1833 wrote for "L'Univers"; as a politician he championed the liberal cause first in the House of Peers 1835 and later in the Constituent Assembly 1848; he was a noteworthy critic of Napoleon III's policies after the latter's 1851 coup d'etat. Signature small clipped 2 3/8" X 3/8" slip tipped to 3" X 1" sheet n.p. n.y. Very good. Likely snipped from the lower right corner of an ALS on black-border mourning stationery for the black border is visible on the bottom and right edges. A nice if tiny example. unknown

Montalembert - von Heine in ‘Lutetia’ als “Jungjesuit[...], der als das tätigste Werkzeug der ultramontanen Rotte bekannt ist”, gescholten - verteidigte nachdrücklich die Freiheit der Kirche gegenüber dem Staat, “gehörte zur liberalen Richtung des französischen Katholizismus, der die kirchlichen Freiheiten unter einer liberalen Staatsverfassung am besten gesichert sah [...] [und] vertrat [...] 1852-57 fast allein die liberale Opposition” gegenüber Napoleon III. (Brockhaus, 17. Aufl., s.v.). Seine ‘Intérêts catholiques au XIX siècle’ (Paris 1852, dte. Ausgabe Worms 1854) “ist eine Hauptschrift des politischen Katholizismus. Wegen seiner Kritik an Napoleon III. brachte sie ihm Anklagen wegen Majestätsbeleidigung ein” (BBKL VI, 1993, s. v.). In französischer Sprache an den Historiker, Archivar und Hochschullehrer Karl Adolf Konstantin Höfler (1811-97) über dessen letzten Brief, den zu lesen er Mühe hatte, da er trotz seines Gefallens an allem Deutschen mit der Kurrentschrift noch nicht ganz vertraut sei, sowie über die bedauerliche Narrheit des Theologen und Predigers Charles Jean Marie Loyson, genannt Père Hyacinthe, der, wie er meint, eher an Dummheit als an Stolz leide, sowie ihre geteilte Bewunderung der auf der Fuldaer Bischofskonferenz gebrauchten Sprache, woraus er Hoffnung für den Ausgang eines zukünftigen Konzils schöpfe: "Je suis très réconnaissant de la lettre que vous m'avez fait l'honneur de m'écrire le 10 de ce mois [...] Je dois vous avouer toutefois que j'ai eu beaucoup de peine à vous lire et ne suis pas sûr d'y être parvenu complètement, parce que, malgré mon goût passionné pour tout ce qui est allemand, je n'ai jamais pu parvenir à me familiariser avec ce qu'on appelle l'écriture allemande [...] Vous déplorez avec moi l'incroyable folie du P. Erwähnt abschließend, dass er unter einer Krankheit leide, die seine Arbeit bereits seit vier Jahren unterbreche und keine Aussicht auf Heilung biete: "Permettez-moi de vous indiquer l'ouvrage que vient de publier M. Dr. Maret [...] sous le titre: du Concile Général et de la Paix réligieuse. Ce prétat y traite la question de l'infaillibilité personnelle du Pape [...] Comme vous le dites très-bien [...] l'époque actuelle rappelle celle qui a précédé la réforme du XVIe siècle. L'Eglise a perdu alors la moitié du monde chrétien!
