19th Century Student of Medicine
Journal of Manuscript Medical Notes in German, titled: "Materia Medica und Formulare nach Dr. Büchner" , [Medical Material and Formulas According to Dr. Büchner].
Manuscript notes made by a nineteenth century student of medicine, possibly intent on becoming an apothecary, who examines and records the earlier works of German physician and professor Andreas Elias Buechner (1701-1769), including numerous medicinal recipes and commentary on physiological effects. 8vo. 56 pages in manuscript. Text is in German. Marbled paper boards with blank label to front. Volume measures approximately 17 x 21 cm. Very slight wear to boards, otherwise in very good condition, internally crisp and bright. The 18th century was the 'Golden Age' of scientific academies and learned societies. This work provides valuable information on the historic application of natural ingredients with medicinal qualities, as well as a somewhat early history of the experimentation and progress in the field of medicine, by drawing from the methodology and recipes of a notable eighteenth century German physician and educator in the field - Andreas Elias Büchner. Following a five-point outline, the writer compiles a lengthy and well organized list of medical ailments or discomforts and the simple remedies for them, over 24 pages, a very small sampling of these being parageusia (a distortion of the sense of taste), digestive issues for which are listed various laxatives, skin sensitivities and emollients, "alterantia" or hormonal alterants, and diaphoretics. A section headed "Special Formulas," comprising 23 pages of more complex medicinal recipes, provides ingredients and measurements for various emulsions, syrups, pills and much more. Andreas Elias Büchner (1701-1769) was a German physician, naturalist, Professor of Medicine at some of Germany's leading institutions, president of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina from 1735 to 1769, and one of Friedrich Hoffmann's most zealous followers. 3 HÜREL - FERIDUN HÜREL, (One of member and founders of Turkish Rock Band 3 Hürel), (1951-).
Original photographic advertisement of 'Üç Hürel' signed and inscribed 'Feridun'.
Very Good Turkish Original b/w advertisement of Turkish Rock Band Üç Hürel, signed and inscribed by Feridun Hürel as 'Atilla'ya sevgiler'. Oblong: 11x16,5 cm. In Turkish. Photograph on the advertisement shows three members and brothers of Üç Hürel. Üç Hürel was a Turkish rock band, formed in 1970 by brothers Onur, Haldun and Feridun Hürel. Considered as among Turkey's most popular Anatolian rock bands, the band performed folk-driven pop and rock music and occasionally also paraphrased classic folk songs with considerable ingenuity. Their lyrics generally featured themes such as peace and freedom. Hürel brothers were born in Trabzon and later moved to Istanbul due to family business. In 1966, the brothers formed their first band, Yankilar, which was later renamed to Istanbul Dörtlüsü. The band performed in small music halls and tried to synthesize Turkish music and traditional rock formats. After forming a number of other bands, including Trio Istanbul, Oguzlar, and Biraderler, Feridun became a member of the Selcuk Alagöz Orchestra. Haldun and Onur later joined him to gain experience and earn money for new equipment. In 1970, they left the orchestra to form 3 Hur-El. Following the release of their debut single in 1970, "Ve Ölum/Seytan Bunun Neresinde," the band released two LPs and more than ten singles in six years. In 1977, Haldun and Feridun left the band for mandatory military service. Coping with the loss of their mother to a traffic accident, the brothers quit music. Feridun moved to England but returned without any significant accomplishments, subsequently returning and specializing in advertising. Onur took a job as an instructor and Haldun started a ceramics and textiles business. 3 Hür-El reunited in 1996, releasing two records in 1996 and 1999, respectively. The band's 1970 song, "Ve Ölüm", was featured in the 2013 Serge Bozon film, Tip Top. (Source: Wikipedia).

Souvenir historique de l'Ancienne République de Venise dédiée à Jules Favre. [ Histoire de Venise... ]

Document signed by 12 members, including Émiland Gauthey, Louis-Bernard Guyton de Morveau, and Hugues Maret. Dijon, 5. IX. 1785.
Small fol. 3½ pp. Historically interesting administrative document of the Académie des Sciences, Arts et Belles-Lettres de Dijon for the year 1785, listing attendance ("Controlle des Entrées de Messieurs les pensionnaires pendant l'année académique 1785"), the payment of pensions ("État des pensions de Messieurs les Pensionaires [!]"), and the lectures that had been given by the members ("Catalogue des ouvrages lus dans le cours de l'année académique"). The identified signatories are: Pierre-Louis Baudot, historian (1760-1816); Charles Boullemier, historian and librarian (1725-1803); François Chaussier, anatomist (1746-1828); Jean-François Durande, botanist (1732-1794); Joseph Enaux, physician (1726-1798); Émiland Gauthey, engineer and architect (1732-1806); Louis-Bernard Guyton de Morveau, chemist, lawyer, and politician (1737-1816); Jean-Baptiste Mailly, historian, geographer, and journalist (1744-1794); Hugues Maret, physician (1726-1786); Claude-Nicolas Perret, lawyer (1718-1788); and Henri-Claude Picardet, educator (1728-1794). Of these, Baudot, Bullemier, Guyton de Morveau, Maret, and Picardet signed the document three times as official witnesses or administrators. The remaining signatures, including a fourth signature each by Baudot, Boullemier, and Maret, confirm receipt of the pensions (fol. 1v). - Of particular historical interest is the list of works that had been presented by some of the signatories. The famous engineer Gauthey read a "Mémoire sur l'épaisseur qu'on doit donner aux murs de soutenement pour resister à la poussée des terres" concerning the statics of retaining walls, Hugues Maret presented a "Memoir on epidemic diseases in the spring of this year", his 1784 "Histoire Meteoro-Nosologique", and an analysis of the water of a volcanic lake in Monterotondo Marittimo, Tuscany. The little-known lawyer Claude-Nicolas Perret read a philosophical text on the subject of slavery: "Examen de l'opinion de quelques Philosophes Modernes sur l'esclavage", the botanist and physician Jean-François Durande presented a "method of multiplying the foreign trees", but also "the method of burying the dead" and "premature burials", while his colleague Enaux brought foward his "Méthode de traiter les morsures des animaux enragés et de la vipere" ("Method of treating bites from rabid animals and from the viper"), which was published in Dijon that year. - Some browning and several stains. Minor damage due to ink corrosion. With several tears minimally affecting the text and the first signature of Picardet. The first signatures of Boullemier and Baudot are somewhat rubbed. With collector's stamp, old price or inventory no. (fol. 1r).

[Album amicorum - Emperor Hirohito].
Friendship album with 69 entries realised in Klecksography, by rulers and members of ruling families, politicians, and other notable persons, including Emperor Hirohito of Japan. Brioni, Fiume, Pola, Rome, Sorrento, 1919-1924.
8vo (ca. 120 x 174 mm). 69 entries on 71 ff. Contemporary boards covered with green coloured paper. An important and highly interesting Italian friendship album assembled between July 1919 and June 1924, realized in Klecksography throughout, by folding in half the signatures while still damp to create symmetrical ink blots, similar to the one used for the Rorschach test. - Among the personalities here represented is Emperor Hirohito, who visited Italy accompanied by his uncle, Prince Kanin Kotohito, during a six-month state visit to Europe before assuming the regency of Japan in November 1921. The album also contains also a series of signatures collected in Fiume (Rijeka) in August 1920, at the height of the Italian Regency of Carnaro, including Gabriele D'Annunzio himself as well as Sante Ceccherini, Viganò, the commander of the defected destroyer Espero, and other legionaries and military heroes. The collection further comprises members of the Italian royal family, represented almost in its entirety, and the ministers of Mussolini's first government, including Costanzo Ciano, Armando Diaz and Giovanni Gentile. - Light marginal dampstaining. Spine and binding professionally restored. Full list of contributors is available upon request.

[Album amicorum - Ost- und Westpreußen].
Stammbuch von Gottfried Ernst Fahrenholtz. Danzig, Dirschau, Gumbinnen, Insterburg, Königsberg, Nordenburg, Preußisch Eylau, Preußisch Sobrost u. a. O., 1759-1794.
172 SS. mit ca. 55 Einträge auf 60 Bll. Qu.-8vo. (17. I. 1793). Textverlust.

[Album amicorum - Pomerania].
Friendship album of Caroline von Pirch from Gluschen (Gluszyno). Bischofswerder, Bromberg, Bütow, Danzig, Dumröse, Elbing, Gluschen, Grumbkow, Lippehne, Stargard Stolp, and other places, 1786-1816, with a few later entries from 1832, 1893 and 1896.
Oblong 8vo (ca. 215 x 120 mm). 246 pp. with 120 pp. of entries, occasionally two entries on a single page. With ca. 25 illustrations (of which 15 watercolour drawings, 4 embroideries, 6 silhouette portraits, 1 mounted copperplate size 145 x 85 mm). Contemporary sheepskin, front cover with gilt initials "C.v.P.", gilt floral borders to both covers, gilt spine on four raised bands. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A fine friendship album compiled in the late 18th and early 19th century by a lady from the Pomeranian gentry, containing entries by numerous members of the Pomeranian and Prussian nobility. - Many contributors are from Caroline's immediate family, including the jurist Ewald Georg von Pirch. Others include the families v. Böhn, v. Brünneck, v. Keszkowsky, v. Knobloch, v. Lindenovsky, v. Mach, v. Manstein, v. Massow, v. Münchow, v. Unruh, v. Schlieben, and v. Zitzewitz, as well as Carl Ludwig v. Böse, Friederike von Coubiere, and Johann Karl Joseph von Schon. Most contributions are in German, others in French, one praising the owner's wisdom: "La Sagesse tient lien de tout / On ne voit point chez toi l'eclat, et la Richesse / et qui l'avare croit devoir tout immoler [...]" (15 May 1786). An emotional entry by Caroline's niece Ernestine von Grabowska compares their friendship to the immortality of the soul: "Deine Verehrung ist so unsterblich wie meine Seele, / Und meine besten Wünsche für Ihr Wohl, so gewiss / als die Dauer, der Freundschafltichsten Ergebenheit [...]" (13 April 1806). Occasionally, later entries are added to earlier ones, with notes relating to a dear deceased friend or family member there memorialised. - The album is illustrated with a wealth of floral watercolour borders and details of various sizes, including a trompe-l’oeil watercolour of sheet music and other papers, the drawing of an old tree, another of a lady mourning at a grave, and several more with painted and monogrammed memorial plates which give evidence of the artistic skills of Caroline's well-wishers. Two dried flowers are sewed onto the page. An engraving captioned, "Mir wird geleistet werden, was mir verheißen ist [...]" shows a female figure with winged temples, sitting in an arbour underneath signs of the zodiac (by C. Frosch after Schnorr v. Carolsfeld, apparently removed from C. Sintenis's "Das Buch für's Herz auf's ganze Jahr", Leipzig 1806). Bound at the front is an entry with embroidered text and illustration on silk, dated 1811; another text entry (by Sophie v. Schlieben, 1800) is entirely embroidered. - As shown by the first entry following the front flyleaf, the album was subsequently owned by another member of the family, also named Caroline von Pirch, from Schidlitz (now Siedlce) near Danzig: there, she states that she received the album on 12 August 1832 as a gift from her good friend, the wife of the district administrator Eduard von Zychlinski (1795-1858). An even later entry, from 1893, reveals that the album was later owned by Agnes v. Mach, another descendant of the family. - Binding somewhat rubbed, edges slightly wornm sewing slightly loosened in places, one leaf loose. Pages show light soiling, thumbing, and traces of old handling, but overall in good condition.

[Album amicorum of Martin Ziegler].
Ara mnemoneutica [...] in gratiam Martini Ziegler Transsilvani, Patricii Stephanopolitani Anno M.DC.XXC. Wittenberg, Leiden, Dresden, Leipzig, Königstein etc., 1680-1703.
Oblong 8vo (ca 100 x 160 mm). 181 entries. With an armorial watercolour with motto, title with watercolour decoration, 5 drawings (3 of which full-page), and 1 engraved coat of arms, all on ca 300 ff. Contemporary calf binding with giltstamped cover borders, leading edges gilt, spine elaborately gilt, edges goffered and gilt. Gilstamped initials "MZCT" and date "1680" to upper cover (slightly rubbed). A wonderfully preserved Baroque friendship album giving a fairly precise record of its owner's youth and university years, containing numerous entries by eminent statesmen and scholars, especially at the University of Wittenberg in the 1680s. The first entry by "Ulricus Comtes a Kinsky et Tettau" (dated 12 April 1685; likely count Franz Ulrich Kinsky, 1634-99, Bohemian diplomat) is followed by those of several professors, including Abraham Calovius (1612-86), Johannes Andreas Quenstedt (1617-88), Johannes Deutschmann (1625-1706), Werner Theodor Martini (1626-85), Caspar Ziegler (1621-90), Conrad Samuel Schurzfleisch (1641-1708), Constantinus Ziegra (1617-91), Georg Caspar Kirchmaier (1635-1700), Michael Strauch (1635-1709), and Balthasar Stolberg (1640-84). There are also numerous scholars from Leipzig and Leiden, such as Georg Lehmann (1616-99), Johann Benedict Carpzov (1639-99), Valentin Alberti (1637-87), August Pfeiffer (1640-98), Adam Rechenberg (1642-1721), Gottfried Nicolaus Ittig (1645-1719), Jacob Trigland the younger (1652-1705), Frederik Dekkers (1644-1720), and Jacob Gronovius (1645-1716). Furthermore, there are entries by colleagues as well as by important men from Dresden (Christoph Bernhard, composer and music scholar), Magdeburg (Christian Scriver, hymnwriter), Hamburg (Joachim F. Gerstenbüttel, theologian), Jena (Joachim Andreas Danz, theologian and oriental scholar), Magdeburg (Balthasar Kindermann, theologian and poet), Erfurt (Christoph Klesch, theologian and poet), Kronstadt (Georg Wilhelm Löffelholz von Kolberg), Amsterdam, Bergfestung Königstein, and Buxtehude. - Martin Ziegler, a baker's son (born in Kronstadt [Brasov] in 1660, died in Brenndorf [Bod] in 1716), attended the Kronstadt grammar school before studying at Wittenberg from 1679 onwards. After nearly twelve years abroad he returned home, soon being named director of his old grammar school. He later became a priest at Tartlau but was suspended following a scandal. In 1713 he was elected priest of Brenndorf, but died a few years afterwards. He is remembered as a historian of his native city and of Transylvania (cf. Wurzbach). - Slight browning; occasional offsetting. Complete save for two removed leaves (likely empty, as they have left no trace of offsetting). Cf. Wurzbach LX, 62.
