Carol I, born Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, was the first monarch of Romania from 1866 to his death in 1914, ruling as Prince (Domnitor) from 1866 to 1881, and as King from 1881 to 1914. He was elected Prince of the Romanian United Principalities on 20 April 1866 after the overthrow of Alexandru Ioan Cuza by a palace coup d'etat. In May 1877, he proclaimed Romania an independent and sovereign nation. The defeat of the Ottoman Empire (1878) in the Russo-Turkish War secured Romanian independence, and he was proclaimed King on 26 March [O.S. 14 March] 1881. He was the first ruler of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen dynasty, which ruled the country until the proclamation of a socialist republic in 1947. During his reign, Carol I personally led Romanian troops during the Russo-Turkish War and assumed command of the Russo/Romanian army during the siege of Plevna. The country achieved internationally recognized independence via the Treaty of Berlin, 1878 and acquired Southern Dobruja from Bulgaria in 1913. Domestic political life was organized around the rival Liberal and Conservative parties. During Carol's reign, Romania's industry and infrastructure were much improved, but the country still had an agrarian-focused economy and the situation of the peasantry failed to improve, leading to a major revolt bloodily suppressed by the authorities. He married Princess Elisabeth of Wied in Neuwied on 15 November 1869. They only had one daughter, Maria, who died at the age of three. Carol never produced a male heir, leaving his elder brother Leopold next in line to the throne. In October 1880 Leopold renounced his right of succession in favour of his son William, who in turn surrendered his claim six years later in favour of his younger brother, the future king Ferdinand. (Wikipedia). Mustafa Hasim Pasha, (1852-1920), was one of the Ottoman grand viziers of Georgian origin. He was son of Sheik Al-Islam Ahmed Muhtar, (1807-1882). He served as the President of the Court of Justice and the Undersecretariat of the Ministry of Justice. Iacob N. Lahovary was a member of the Romanian aristocracy, a general, politician and diplomat who served as the Minister of War and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Romania.

Oblong 12mo. Together 2 pp. Mounted on paper (4to). The draft is addressed to the French inventor Édouard Belin, accepting an invitation: "C'est avec la plus grande joie que j'ai l'occasion de visiter les merveilleuses inventions de Mr Bellin". - In the letter card, Carol thanks the recipient for condolences on the death of his father King Ferdinand I of Romania on 20 July 1927: "Bien qu'un peu tardivement, a cause du grand malheur qui m'a frappé, mais pas moins sincèrement je vous remercie pour les condoléances que vous m'avez envoyés". - Carol lived in exile in Paris from 1926 to 1930 due to his morganatic marriage to Magda Lupescu and his subsequent exclusion from the line of succession. Upon King Ferdinand's death, Carol's son Michael acceded to the throne at the age of five in a regency headed by Carol's younger brother Prince Nicolae. The regency was overthrown in 1930 and Carol was offered the crown of Romania. He ruled until 1940, when he was ousted by Marshal Ion Antonescu and succeeded by his son Michael. - Together with a portrait postcard depicting Carol II with an inscription to Belin by a Romanian captain (Paris, 22 Dec. 1927). - The telegram draft shows ink damage affecting the text and signature. The letter card on stationery with mourning border.

Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Born Charles Auguste Émile Durand in Lille, the painter adopted the name "Carolus-Duran" upon moving to Paris in 1853. From 1870 onwards he applied himself almost entirely to portraiture and opened his own studio on Boulevard du Montparnasse, where he also operated a painting school. - Lower left corner slightly creased. Self-addressed by the collector. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

Seine späteren Prosaschriften sind stark autobiographisch geprägt: Er verarbeitete darin u. a. seine Kindheit, seine Erlebnisse als Bataillonsarzt während des Ersten Weltkriegs sowie seine berufliche Erfahrungen als Arzt. Nach der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten blieb er in Deutschland, hielt aber Kontakt zu Exilschriftstellern wie Thomas Mann, lehnte 1933 die Berufung in die preußische Dichter-Akademie zwar ab, übernahm jedoch 1942 das Amt des Präsidenten der "Europäischen Schriftstellervereinigung".

"The Flying Frenchman" a French-born Canadian wrestler who held a number of world titles in the 1950s and '60s; a French underground resistance fighter during World War Two and a member of France's men's gymnastics team at the 1948 Olympics in London Carpentier brought great gymnastics skills to the ring -- cutting-edge acrobatic leaps and aerial maneuvers that are now standard; later he turned promoter and as such discovered Andre the Giant. Most uncommon matte-finish IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" Chicago IL 1960 July 16. Near fine. Handsome well-known half-length portrait of a smiling Carpentier in his prime wearing wrestling trunks and a championship belt hands on hips; below this is the printed caption "Edouard Carpentier / World's Heavyweight Champion" and surrounding Carpentier are seven small inset images of him in action. Across his chest and down his torso he pens large and bold in blue ballpoint: "To My Good Wrestling Fan and Friend / Donald M. Burnell / Lots of Luck / From Edouard Carpentier / Chicage illinois sic / July 16 1960 / E. Carpentier." This quite nice and highly unusual item was likely created for some cryptic promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso. Choice vintage piece from the "Golden Age of Wrestling" -- likely one of a kind in this large format. Uncommon thus. Superb for display. unknown

Alexandria). - Johann Gottlob Carpzov, Sohn des Theologen Samuel Benedikt Carpzov, studierte Theologie in Leipzig und Altdorf bei Nürnberg und begleitete als Reiseprediger den polnisch-sächsischen Gesandten nach England und Holland. 1719 erhielt er eine a.o.Professur der orientalischen Sprachen in Leipzig; von dort aus ging er 1730 als Superintendent nach Lübeck. "Aufwärts aus dieser Nacht steigt unser Pfad, | Denn ein Emporgang ist das Erdenleben [...]". - Carrière habilitierte sich 1842 in Gießen und hielt dort populäre Vorlesungen zu philosophischen und literarischen Themen. Nachdem er sein vielbeachtetes Werk ‚Die philosophische Weltanschauung der Reformationszeit in ihren Beziehungen zur Gegenwart‘ (1847) veröffentlicht hatte, erhielt er den Titel eines ao. Professors. 1853 folgte er seinem Schwiegervater Justus von Liebig nach München, wo er zunächst Honorarprofessor an der Universität, dann Professor für Kunstgeschichte an der Kunstakademie und endlich 1887 Universitätsprofessor der Ästhetik wurde. Seit 1889 war er Mitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. - Gefaltet.

To Miss Lawrie, forwarding a prospectus for a house, with an autograph postscript, apparently responding to a proposed dinner party of only three persons: "I have undertaken, on behalf of a friend, to circulate the enclosed prospectus, in the hope of finding a purchaser, or a tenant, for the house. Would you kindly show it to any friend of yours, whom you think it might suit? / Believe me, / Sincerely yours, C. L. Dodgson. / As a general rule, I think 3 a very bad number for a Dinner-party. But was there ever a rule without an exception?". - In 1875 Dodgson took several known photographs of Rose Lawrie, one of which showed Lawrie draped in a white cloth, titled "The Birthday Wreath" (published in an album of the same name), after the poem "The Birthday" by Dodgson's pen friend Christina Rossetti, the sister of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. - With traces of old mounting to the verso. Slight brownstaining due to glue residue. Includes a small collector's note.

8vo. Together 2 pp. on bifolia. Both to the conductor Walther Straram concerning his engagement as choirmaster and conductor at the Opéra-Comique. In the letter from 13 June 1908, Carré lays out the conditions of the ten-month engagement starting September. The second letter from 29 May 1909 was to remind Straram of the expiration of the contract at the end of the season. The earlier letter is written in Carré's own hand. - Carré had been a successful actor before becoming the director of the theâtre du Vaudeville in Paris in 1885. In 1898 he was appointed director of the Opéra-Comique, a position he would hold until 1914 and again from 1919 to 1925. - After conducting at the Paris Opéra and the Opéra-Comique, Walther Straram (1876-1933) founded his own Orchestre des Concerts Straram in 1925. The ensemble that emphasized contemporary music was considered to be among the best French orchestras at the time. Straram premiered Honegger's Prélude à la tempête, Ravel's Boléro, and Messiaen's Les Offrandes oubliées. In 1929 Stranvinsky conducted the orchestra for the first recording of Le Sacre du printemps. - Both on stationery with lithographed letterhead of the director of the Opéra-Comique. Traces of folds.
