Catherine de' Medici, Queen of France, wife of King Henry II of France (1519-1589).
Autograph letter signed. No place, [probably November 1581].
Folio (320 x 235 mm). 1 p., with address panel to verso. To secretary of state Nicolas de Neufville, seigneur de Villeroy. Catherine de' Médici was one of the great female letter writers of the Renaissance, drafting many of her political letters (as here) in her own hand. She had been Queen consort of France as wife of Henry II, but rose to political power after his death in 1559. She stood behind the brief reign of her eldest son Francis II and, upon his death only a year later, was appointed regent to her second son Charles IX (then only ten years old). He died in 1574, leaving Catherine to preside over the chaotic reign of her third son Henry III, a period of terrible civil and religious war in France. Despite the turmoil, Catherine was a remarkable administrator in a political landscape in which she could trust almost no one. The present letter, drafted in her own hand (in itself remarkable), is typical of her direct style. She informs the secretary of state, Villeroy, one of the few members of government with whom she was intimate, of her wish to grant the benefice of the Abbey of Chailly (on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau) to the marquis de Saint-Sorlin, son of the Duchess de Nemours (and later duc de Nemours and Henry I of Savoy). She also makes provision for the benefice of Martigny-le-Comte (Burgundy) and arranges benefices for the sons of the statesman Pomponne de Bellièvre (who later became chancellor of France). The letter is apparently unpublished. It does not appear in the collected "Lettres de Catherine de Médicis" (1880-1943, 10 vols.), though a letter of 13 November 1581 (vol. VII, p. 415) addressed to the duc d’Épernon, on the same subject, allows us to date ours with some confidence. - Old folds, light browning, loss to blank left-hand margin, just touching a word of text and possibly the date, but avoiding the signature, neatly repaired, three further neat repairs to verso. Provenance: Otto August Schulz, Leipzig.

Catherine de' Medici, Queen of France, wife of King Henry II of France (1519-1589).
Letter signed ("Caterine"). Paris, 18. VII. 1576.
Folio. ½ p. With ms. address. To the banker and courtier Horatio Rucellai (ca. 1530-1605), expressing her wish that he return to Paris as quickly as possible and pleading him "not to believe a thing of what has been told" to him, should he have "heard that his assignations of the debt of Lyon have been altered", underlining that the King has no intention of changing anything: "Je vous prie vous en venir le plustost et dilligemmens q[ue] vous pourriez. Et pour ce q[ue] vous pourriez avoir entendu que l’on ayt changé quelque chose en vos assignations sur la creance de Lyon Je vous prie n’en croire rien de tout ce q[ue] l’on vous en dira car il n’en est rien comme vous congnoistrez quant vous serez arrivé car vous trouverez toutes choses en leur entier pour vre regard, et le Roy monsieur mon filz en bonne disposition de ny rien changer [...]”. - Horatio Rucellai was of Florentine origin but had left the city in conflict with the ruling Medicis. In Lyon he established a successful bank and provided a financial lifeline to the crown during the First French War of Religion in 1562/63, though Catherine de' Medici was forced to pledge parts of the crown jewels to him. Rucellai's apparent claim on liabilities of the city of Lyon is certainly connected to his role as creditor of the French crown. In 1581, Rucellai leased the salt tax (gabelle) and achieved a reduction in order to minimize fraud. From 1587, Rucellai served in the court of Ferdinando I de' Medici. As a former courtier of Catherine's, Rucellai was charged with the negotiations for Ferdinando's marriage with Catherine's favourite granddaughter Christina of Lorraine, achieved in 1589. - Counter-signed by "Chantereau". Some foxing, minor water damage and two deeper tears to the lower margin.

Catherine II, the Great, Empress of Russia (1729-1796).
Autograph letter signed ("Caterina"). No place, "Montag um 10 Uhr Morgens" ("Monday, 10 a.m.").
Small 4to. 1 p. on a bifolium. In German. To her confidant, the former Prussian hussar commander Friedrich Wilhelm (von) Bauer (1731-83), who had entered Russian service in 1769 and had been promoted to Lieutenant general in 1773, soon acting as her head engineer: "To prove to you that, although I was ill yesterday and am still weak today, I am indeed alive, I send you the Viennese news about your lawsuit with Count Trumbach; when you are through with these papers, you may return them to the Vice Chancellor and tell me what you further wish to be done [...]" (transl.). - In 1780, Bauer was made general of engineering; he was responsible for the construction and maintenance of Catherine's ports, fortifications, roads, canals, and salt mines. In 1782 he created the "Hydraulic Engineering Corps". During the last years of his life, Bauer acted as Catherine's indispensable advisor in all technical matters (cf. NDB). The "Count Trumbach" mentioned in the letter is in all likelihood Friedrich Adolf Rudolf von Trümbach, who - like Bauer - had commanded a Prussian militia corps during the Seven Years' War. - A little stained, browned and wrinkled, but generally well preserved.

Autograph letter signed ("G. C."). "Monday evening", [ca. 1840].
8vo. 2½ pp. on a single bifolium. I leave at an early hour tomorrow (Tuesday) for Manchester [...] In any correspondence you may have relative to Col. Sherburne I pray that (though you are at liberty to make use of the information I have given you) you will make little use of my name as you well can, as I would rather study peace than war with such a person [...]". - Unable to find a suitable market in America for his growing body of work, Catlin travelled to England in 1839 hoping to find a more receptive audience.
