Comme de nombreux jeunes gens de l’époque romantique, il commença par cajoler les Muses et publia en 1852 un recueil de vers intitulé les Derniers chants. Il s’essaya ensuite au théâtre avant de se tourner vers l’étude de l’histoire, et plus particulièrement l’histoire de la Révolution. Il publia des ouvrages dans lesquels il affichait hautement ses convictions républicaines. A deux reprises il fut candidat démocrate aux élections législatives dans la Somme. En 1871 son département lui offrit un fauteuil au Conseil Général. Il fut battu en 1876, puis élu à Paris en 1878 par le quartier des Quinze-Vingts. En 1886 il échoua aux élections sénatoriales de Seine-et-Oise, mais fut élu en 1892. Il mourut à Paris en 1898. Hamel était franc-maçon. Il fut membre de la délégation maçonnique qui eut une entrevue avec Thiers le 22 avril 1871 (voir Maitron VI 291).

Very Good French Original autograph letter signed 'Hamdoullah Soubhi', to Rechid Safvet Atabinen, who was a counselor of Geneve International Economy Conference in 1919. 20x16 cm. Completely in French. 3 p. Subhi writes that he welcomes the dispatch from Constantinople, where he does not feel very well, to Geneva, where he feels young. He tells that Rifat Pasha (Turkish ambassador in Geneve) and he was late for that he delivered his 'biography' and 'portrait'. He mentions the meeting (probably, The Geneve International Economy Conference). Then he uses an interesting style by writing "It is not our duty to thank Rechid Safvet Bey, on behalf of those supporting us here, and to have defended the Turkish Cause with this documentation which follows...". He goes on as 'So much the news published in the Italian, French, English and German newspapers about our country is translated' and 'Also, having made a nine conference on the event that took place in Germany'... Foxing on paper slightly chipped on margins. Folded. Hamdullah Suphi Tanriöver was a highly influential Turkish poet, intellectual, diplomat, and politician. He adopted his surname Tanriöver after the Turkish Surname Law was enacted in 1934. He was born to Abdüllatif Suphi Pasha, an Ottoman statesman in Constantinople in 1885. He studied at Galatasaray High School graduating in 1904. He later served as a translator, and a teacher for Turkish after earning a certificate. In Darülfünün, later renamed to Istanbul University, he was appointed professor of Islamic art. During the Turkish Republic era, he was elected to the parliament, and also served as a government minister. He married to Ayse Saide, who, according to some sources, was a descendant of two former Anatolian beys (Isfendiyarids and Ramazanids). During his childhood, his father's mansion was a meeting point of famous poets, and he was influenced by the poet community during his early years. He published his first poems in a literary newspaper published by his uncle in Paris, France. He began writing in Genç Kalemler (literally: "The Young Pens"), a literary periodical. He also distinguished himself as an orator. He took part in a committee, which was tasked to reflect the ordeal of the Turkish population in the Balkans after the Balkan Wars (1912-1913). During the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923), he took side with Mustafa Kemal Pasha (Atatürk), and became a member of the 1st Parliament of Turkey. He was appointed Director of the Press and Information. Then, he served as the Minister of Education from 13 December 1920 to 20 November 1921 in the 1st, 2nd, and the 3rd cabinet of the Executive Ministers of Turkey. After the proclamation of the Republic, he served again as the Minister of National Education in the 4th government of Turkey between 3 March 1925 and 21 December 1925. In 1931, he was appointed Ambassador of Turkey to Romania in Bucharest. In 1943, he entered the parliament from the Republican People's Party. In 1950, he joined the newly founded Democrat Party. Several years later, however, following the struggle for the "Right to Prove" in the press, he co-founded the Liberty Party. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - A member of the Glasgow School, Hamilton, who specialized in landscape painting, won a gold medal at the 1897 Munich International Exhibition, which led to several overseas commissions, including one from Victor Emmanuel III of Italy. His work was shown in the British Pavillon at the Venice Biennale at all eight exhibitions between 1897 and 1910. - Signed twice. Several small creases and ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

V & VI [...]". - A clipping with another signature mounted below the text. Letter mounted on a tab. 2 tears, caused by breaking the seal, rebacked with paper, one slightly affecting the text. - Enclosed is an engraved portrait of the Scottish diplomat Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803), whom a previous collector apparently confused with the philosopher.

Laub, dem großen Violinvirtuosen in Moskau, um welche ich Sie für meinen lieben Sohne, welcher ein Schüler des Herrn Laub, bei welchem er zwei Jahre in Moskau war, ergebenst bitten möchte. Sie thun ein wahrhaft edles Werk wenn Sie meinen Sohne damit beschenken u. ich so wie mein Sohn werden ewig dankbar dafür sein! Ebenso möchte er gerne das 11te Viol. Concert v. L. Spohr [...]. Ist es in Ihrem berühmten Verlage erschienen? Oder bei André [d. i. der Komponist und Musikverleger Johann André]?? Indem wir hoffen, keine Fehlbitte an Ew. 1 S. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. 8vo. An eine Redaktion: "Verehrte Redaction | beehre ich mich anbei, nach langer Pause, wieder einmal einen Beitrag zu übersenden. Er behandelt ein interessantes Thema ‚die Vogelsprache' und dürfte sich wohl des Beifalls erfreuen. Da ich wieder gänzlich zur Feder zurückgekehrt bin, so würde es mich sehr freuen, wenn Sie mir einige neue Aufträge geben oder mir erlauben wollten, Ihnen von Zeit zu Zeit einen Artikel einzusenden. Sollten Sie den heutigen verwenden wollen, so bitte ich, das Honorar stehen zu lassen, bis es von mehreren zusammen kommt; im gegentheiligen Fall darf ich wohl von Ihrer mir oft bewiesenen Freundlichkeit Rücksendung des Manuscripts erwarten […]". - Hamm wurde 1843 Prof. der Chemie und der Landwirtschaft in Hofwyl, 1844 Direktor der Ackerbauschule in Rütihobel bei Bern und redigierte seit 1847 die "Agronomische Zeitung". 1867 kam er nach Wien und trat in den österr. Staatsdienst ein. Zunächst Chef des Departements für Landwirtschaft, trat er 1868 in das neugegründete Ackerbauministerium ein und redigierte die Landwirtschaftszeitung der Wiener "Neuen Freien Presse". - Auf Briefpapier der Agronomischen Zeitung. An den Internisten Rudolf Ritter Jaksch von Wartenhorst (1855-1947): “Für die freundliche Zusendung der 3ten Auflage Ihres vortrefflichen Lehrbuchs sage ich Ihnen meinen besten Dank [...]”. - Jakschs ‘Klinische Diagnostik innerer Krankheiten mittels bakteriolog., chem. u. mikroskop. Untersuchungsmethoden’ war 1892 in dritter Auflage bei Urban & Schwarzenberg in Wien erschienen. - Der schwedische Chemiker schrieb u. a. ein wiederholt aufgelegtes ‘Lehrbuch der physiologischen Chemie’. - Rudolf Rt. Jaksch von Wartenhorst wurde 1889 als Professor für Innere Medizin und Vorstand der Kinderklinik an die Deutsche Universität in Prag berufen. Seit 1890 Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina, veranlaßte er den Bau der 1899 eröffneten Medizinischen Klinik und wurde für die Konstruktion seiner Dauerbäder 1899 ausgezeichnet. Er entdeckte die Azetessigsäure im Harn und verfaßte mehrere Lehrbücher. - In altem Sammlungsumschlag mit irrtümlicher Beschriftung.

In sauberer Sekretärsschrift in lateinischer Sprache ausgestellt und von Hammer, der als Professor der Philosophie an der Universität Wien und als k. k. Bücherzensor tätig war, eh. unterzeichnet. Vgl. DBA I 467, 125. - Der Student “Carolus Comes de Palm” war möglicherweise der “einem uralten schweizer von Kaiser Josef II. wegen vieler Wohltaten in den Fürstenstand erhobenen Geschlecht entstammend[e]” Karl Joseph Fürst Palm-Gundelfingen, ein Großgrundbesitzer, mit dem das Geschlecht zugleich ausstarb (vgl. Kosch, Das kathol. Deutschland, Bd. 2, 1937; zit. n. DBA II 980, 129).

An Josef Wesely mit Dank für ihm übersandte Wünsche zum Geburtstag. - Hammer war Mitarbeiter der "Neuen Bücherschau" und der "Weltbühne", war 1933 als Sozialist kurzzeitig interniert und trat erst nach Kriegsende wieder an die Öffentlichkeit. Als Mitglied der KPD beteiligte er sich nach 1945 wesentlich am kulturellen Aufbau in Thüringen und war als Verlagslektor und danach als freier Schriftsteller tätig. Neben Erzählungen und Biographien schrieb er u. a. die Autobiographie "Traum und Wirklichkeit" (1975), die die Lebensbedingungen von Jugendlichen aus der Unterschicht bis 1933 dokumentiert. - Auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Briefkopf.

¾ S. 4to. An die namentlich nicht genannte Lili Marberg: "Ueber Ihre schriftstellerischen Erfolge freue ich mich aufrichtig. Wie viele Schreibende dürften Sie um Ihre Erfolge beneiden! Nur glaube ich nicht, dass Sie [..], wie Sie meinen, 'fertig' sind: ich habe das Glück, Sie persönlich zu kennen und bin darum überzeugt, dass noch viel Heiteres und Ernstes darauf wartet, in die Presse überzugehen. Natürlich, wenn man gedrängt wird, glaubt man immer, es fällt einem nichts mehr ein, aber es dauert nicht lange, dann meldet sich wieder so ein Einfallsteufelchen. Uebrigens glaube ich, dass Frau Auguste Wilbrandt keinen Anstoss nehmen würde, gelegentlich auch einmal die Heldin einer Gesichte zu sein, wenn man eine so liebenswürdige Art des Erzählens besitzt, wie Sie, verehrte gnädige Frau [...]". - Hammer war, wie am gedr. Briefkopf ausgewiesen, Feuilletonredakteur der "Tages-Post" in Linz. - Lili Marberg (1876-1962) gehörte von 1911 bis 1950 dem Wiener Burgtheater an. Seit 1936 auch Ehrenmitglied, spielte sie zunächst in Stücken Wedekinds, Hauptmanns und Ibsens, später vorwiegend Königinnen und mütterliche Frauen und galt weithin als vorzügliche Charakterdarstellerin. Zu ihren Hauptrollen zählten Desdemona, Hedda Gabler und Helena in "Vor Sonnenaufgang". Ihre einzige Filmrolle war die des Fräulein Munk in Walter Reischs "Silhouetten" (1936).
