IRWIN Richard B. 1839 92
Printed Document Signed
This great-great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin served as aide-de-camp to General George B. McClellan and later to General Nathaniel Banks through most of the Civil War; a Wyoming cattle rancher later in life he authored the 1892 "History of the Nineteenth Army Corps" and contributed many articles to "The Battles and Leaders of the Civil War." Printed DS 2pp recto and verso 4" X 7" Washington DC 1861 October 18. Very good. Lightly age toned with faint single vertical fold; left margin likely trimmed. This printed "General Orders No. 30" issued from the Headquarters of the Army of the Potomac concerns "the preparation of soldiers' discharge papers" -- which apparently were often "in a great many instances very defective and imperfect" and required all types of additional red tape. This two-page summary runs through the proper papers any soldier should have to be correctly cashiered. At the close it notes "By Command of Major General McClellan" and is signed in type at lower right by Paymaster General Benjamin F. Larned and Assistant Adjutant General S. Williams -- and is signed in full in rich brown ink at lower left by Irwin above his printed title. An attractive example. unknown

Isabey, Jean Baptiste, French painter (1767-1855).
Autograph letter signed. Pontchartrain, 19. X. 1848.
8vo. 1 page on bifolium. Reports to an unidentified female recipient a conversation with Madame D'Osmond about their friend's request. Isabey eagerly awaits the friend's visit to Pontchartrain: "J'ai dit à Mdm. D'Osmond le desir de notre ami, elle m'a repondu qu'il seroit le bien reçu pour mon compte. Je me réjouis s'il vient à Pontchartrain tendis que je suis. Permettez que Je saisisse cette occasion pour vous renouveller [!] l'assurance de la haute considération Madame [...]". - Isabey instructed her friend Aimée Caroillon des Tillières, later called Aimée d'Osmond, in the art of drawing. Isabey had his own room in the château where he produced views of the interior in 1815. After the death of Claude Caroillon Destillières in 1814 the Château de Pontchartrain passed to his daughter Aimée who in 1817 was married to Charles-Eustache-Gabriel, known as Rainulphe Eustache d'Osmond. Rainulphe Eustache was the brother of Adèle d'Osmond, countess of Boigne, whose portrait Isabey also painted. Isabey created the "Portrait d'Eustachine-Jeanne D'Osmond" (1828), the daughter of Aimée, born in 1827. Isabey portrayed many aristocrats, including a "Portrait of the countess Maria Walewska", and sovereigns. His portrait of "Napoleon at Malmaison" (1802) was praised for its excellent likeness to the emperor. During the years of 1830-48 Isabey directed the artists’ studio at the Sèvres porcelain factory. - Traces of old folds.

ISMAIL PIRGE (Famous pocketknife craftman master of Bursa).
[IMPORTANT AUTOGRAPH LETTERS from EARLY PIONEER of TRADITIONAL BURSA KNIFE and POCKETKNIFE CRAFTSMANSHIP] [3 Autograph letters signed Ismail Pirge].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original three autograph letters. 1+1+1 p. 'Ismail Pirge Biçak, Destere ve Tarak Imal ve Satis Yeri' letterhead. Signed by Ismail Pirge, who was the most important Turkish knife and pocketknife craftsman and manufacturer in Bursa city, third of six generations. They are two kind request letters. Written to Osman Bey. Dated 1948. In Ottoman script. One is written by a pencil, another is by a fountain pen with a black ink. Between the years 1877-1878 the Ottoman - Russian War (93 Harbi) after the Turks from the Balkans migrated to Anatolia, there was also a knife master Ismail Bey. In 1879, he started to work in Yahya Usta's shop (Yesilyayla Biçakçisi) in Okçular Çarsisi (one of famous bazaar which means 'Archery Bazaar' in Bursa city which still has touristic crafts) and started to produce knives and agricultural tools. When he died at a young age in 1885, his son Mehmet (Pirge) continued to do the affairs of Ismail Usta. The art of knives was thus passed on from father to son.
