In der Annahme, sie kenne die Details aus den Zeitungen, und in der Hoffnung, ihr bald bessere Nachrichten überbringen zu können, da die in einem solchen Belagerungszustand zulässigen harten Mittel die triste Lage bald beenden würden: "La lutte a été affreuse et sie meurtrière qu'on ne peut encore mesurer toute l'étendue du mal. Je pense que tu recevas [!] les journaux et que tu savas [!] ainsi les horribles details de cette bataille. L'insurrection est maintenant refoulée sur quelques points et on peut espérer que tout sera bientôt terminé. L'état de siège a donné les moyens d'agir avec rig[u]eur et bientôt il faut espérer que cette triste situation où est Paris depuis vendredi sera bientôt cessé. Ebba Johannsen wirkte ab 1926 an Otto Falckenbergs Kammerspielen in München, war zwischen 1929 und 1945 am Wiener Burgtheater und zwischenzeitlich für einige Jahre auch in Dresden und an Gustaf Gründgens' Preußischen Staatstheatern in Berlin aktiv. In den 1950er-Jahren wechselte sie ans Stadttheater Bern, nach Zürich und schließlich ans Stadttheater Basel. Ab 1966 gastierte sie wieder vermehrt in Wien und war bis zu ihrem Tod neuerlich am Burgtheater.

Manuscript diary with several drawings, kept by an Englishman who travelled with his family to Germany, Belgium, Switzerland from 29 May 1867 - 15 June 1867, then to France from 1 June 1873 - 12 December 1874, relocating them for these 15 months to Normandy. Contains approximately 36 drawings, one which is a double-leaf scene pasted within, and a few botanical specimens mounted within. Accompanied by a travel itinerary with colour map detailing part of the first journey to the continent in 1867. 8vo. 2, 136, 156 pages. Brown leather boards, tooled front and back. Volume measures approximately 10 x 15 x 2 cm. Map/itinerary leaf measures 18 x 12,5 cm. Wear to boards especially at spine, front hinge delicate, otherwise in very good condition, an interesting Victorian diary. The writer is John Davis Britton, born on 28 December 1832 as revealed within the diary when he celebrates his 41st birthday at home in Vire. He is travelling with his wife Kitty, and children, at least five of whom are named - Lizzie, Aline, Ethel, Diddy, Dick. The delightful two-week travel to the continent features accounts of Lucerne at the dawn of tourism before most of today's historic hotels were even built, and highly favourable descriptions of Freiburg im Breisgau which has nothing short of enamoured the visitors. Forrestal resigned in 1948 he became this country's second Secretary of Defense in 1949 only serving until 1950 when he resigned and paved the way for the illustrious George C. Marshall. Printed DS 3pp rectos only 8" X 12�" n.p. 1937. Very good. Lightly edgeworn with faint single horizontal fold at center; stapled at upper left. Marked "FUTURE RELEASE / Please Note Date" in red at top of first page the War Department press release is summarized at top: 'This address of The Honorable Louis Johnson The Assistant Secretary of War to be made at the Armistice Day Ceremonies at the National Memorial Amphitheater Arlington National Cemetery Virginia on November 11 1937." Johnson's speech begins "Another year has passed. Again we have stood in devout silence before the tomb of our Unknown Soldier. Again we have held communion with his immortal soul" and is a touching patriotic address that discusses at some length the U.S.'s military readiness in the face of turmoil in Europe. In a blank portion at upper right of the first page he boldly pens "Louis Johnson / The Assistant Sec of War" in blue ink. Very attractive and highly unusual in this form. unknown

Accompanied by a superb glossy 9" X 7" black and white news agency photograph depicting President Truman seated at a large table with four others and five standing behind. Original mimeographed paper label neatly affixed to verso dated 12 February 1950 titles this scene "President Hears Report from Joint Chiefs" and describes it: "The Joint Chiefs of Staff who returned Friday night from an inspection of the Far East. are shown as they reported to President Truman and defense department heads at the White House yesterday." This Maryland attorney took on high profile cases such as that of Sanford in the Dred Scott case General Fitz-John Porter in his court martial trial after Second Manassas and Mary Surratt the alleged Lincoln assassination co-conspirator; as a statesman he served Maryland in the Senate 1849-50 1863-68 and acted as Zachary Taylor's Attorney General 1849-50 and as U.S. Minister to Great Britain 1868-69. Inscription and signature clipped from letter on a 4�" X 2�" slip n.p. n.y. pencilled note on verso states Baltimore 1865 June 24. Very good. Faint age toning; mounting traces on verso. A large and bold "with pleasure / yr obdt. servt / Reverdy Johnson" in brown ink in Johnson's usual hurried sloppy script. Another hand inks a miniscule "Senate Maryland 1865" above his signature. Accompanied by a fine example of Johnson's 3" X 1 3/4" buff heavy stock calling card with "Mr. Reverdy Johnson" in italic typeface at center and also a 5 3/8" X 8�" steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of Johnson in later years undated but accomplished while Attorney General thus circa 1850. Very good. Lightly age toned with a bit of foxing. A fine trio. unknown

The freckled red-haired American golden boy of numerous films of the 1940s and '50s -- most memorably "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" 1944 and "The Caine Mutiny" 1954 -- continued appearing in films and on television into the 1980s. IPS 8" X 10" n.p. n.y. circa 1960. Very good. Faint inoffensive tape stain at each corner. Glossy head-and-shoulders portrait of Johnson in suit and tie facing right head turned toward the camera and grinning slyly left hand on cheek. In a light area at lower left he inscribes and signs huge and bold: "To Don -- / Kindest regards -- / Van Johnson" in thickish dark blue ink. An outstanding vintage example. unknown
