In this note Napoléon refers to another letter he wrote previously, urging the recipient to pursue matters in his sense and presenting himself as the most suitable person to promote things: "Je ne avais parlé qu'après donner dictat [?] à cette lettre et je vous prie d'elle faire la petition d'écrire que personne n'est destiné autant [...] que moi et non plus noté à pouvoir faire quelque chose que puisse le poursuivre. Si mes occupations me laisse[nt] [...] je ferais moimême avec urgence sa lettre. | Bonaparte". (Translation: "I only spoke after having dictated [?] the letter, and I request you to make a petition of it, writing that nobody is so destined or more respected than I am to do something that could advance it. If my occupations permit me I will treat your letter urgently myself. Bonaparte". - Addressee illegible. Extensive spotting with slight damage to folds, reinforced in parts.

Small folio (227 x 345 mm). 1 page. On headed stationery. Framed and glazed (320 x 441 mm). A scribal order to establish boards of trade in several Egyptian cities. Napoleon writes to his general in Cairo, requesting the names of such persons suitable to staff the Cairo board, mentioning that the board members for Rosette, Alexandria and Damiette will be named by the generals in charge there, and concluding with a request for three copies of the order, intended for the other generals: "Vous trouverez cy joint l'ordre p. l'établissement d'un tribunal de commerce. Faites moi passer les noms de ceux qui vous croyez devoir composer le tribunal de caire. Quant aux tribunaux de rosette, d'alexandrie et de damiette, les généraux commandant en place en nommeront les membres. Je vous prie de me faire passer aujourd'huy trois copies de cet ordre pour être envoyée à ces generaux [...]". - With a handwritten postscript, presumably by the recipient, passing on the order to his colleagues in Alexandria, Rosette and Damiette (dated Cairo, "27 fructidor an 6" [13 September 1798]). - Very slightly brownstained in places; upper margin somewhat dust-toned. A fine document of Napoleon's efforts to set up French colonial administration in Egypt.

Napoleon was eager to impress his imperial guest and spared no expenses, hosting lavish receptions, hunting parties, and theatre performances. Donnez de mes nouvelles à l'Impératrice; je me porte fort bien. Le tems a été superbe jusqu'ici. To the archchancellor Jean-Jacques-Régis de Cambacérès, asking him to draft a birth certificate for his niece Louise Julie Caroline, the youngest daughter of Joachim Murat, King of Naples, and Napoleon's youngest sister Caroline in accordance with the statute of the imperial family: "Nous désirons qu'assisté du Secrétaire de l'État de la famille Impériale vous fassiez dresser un acte constatant la naissance de la Princesse Louise Julie Caroline, quatrième enfant de notre Soeur la Reine de Naples. Vous vous conformerez, pour ce qui concerne la désignation des témoins, à ce qui est prescrit par l'article 19". - Louise Julie Caroline (1805-89) was born before the decree of the statute of the Imperial family on 30 March 1806, which explains the necessity for a new birth certificate and the delay. - The letter was written during the Congress of Erfurt, a meeting between Napoleon and Alexander I of Russia that lasted from 27 September to 14 October in the then-French city and was supposed to reaffirm the French-Russian alliance that had been forged in the Treaties of Tilsit in July 1807. Folio. 2 pp. A letter to Rear Admiral Count Batte instructing him how to move a part of the flotilla from Boulogne-sur-Mer to Cherbourg. - Napoléon informs Count Batte about his intention to move 9 prams, 4 bombers and 40 canon shallops of the new type without delay from Boulogne to Cherbourg. The division will be equipped with the 12th and 14th garrison of the flotilla and on its arrival at Cherbourg it will remain without any special commander. As the simultaneous departure of such a number of ships would cause inconveniences, Napoléons asks Count Batte to organize the departure in sections of 3, 6 or 9 ships and to send off such a number one after the other as the circumstances will allow him to. Napoléon is convinced that he has to facilitate the passage. He asks Count Batte not to leave Boulogne until at least half of the totality of the ships will have appeared and his activities will be confirmed to him. Napoléon tells Count Batte to make sure not to miss any occasion to increase the departure of sections of the flotilla taking into consideration that the season is still very favourable for this movement and that any delay could cause an infinite retardation of success. Napoléon informs Count Batte that upon his arrival at Cherbourg the Ministry of the Navy will address him with instructions concerning the task that he has to fulfill and concerning the ultimate destination of this important part of the flotilla. Napoléon ends his letter by pleading to god to keep Rear Admiral Count Batte in good health. - Some tiny holes (not touching the signature).

4to. ¾ p. Final page of the broullion of a letter to an unidentified recipient, possibly to M. Perrier, director of the arsenal of Marseille, or Sucy, commissaire des guerres. The letter, which contained extensive instructions on the deployment of artillery, was obviously written at the end of 1793 or in early 1794, immediately after the Fall of Toulon, when the Republicans won an early victory over a Royalist rebellion and Napoleon was "inspecteur des côtes". The fragment preserved here begins with the words "Le fondeur est", which are struck out, then continues: "Roux, fondeur, ést venu me demander que l'on fixe le prix de sa journée. La municipalité doit fixer le maximum sur cet objet, comme sur tant d'autres. Je crois qu'il vaut mieux payer tant par quintal de balles que par jours. Vous pouvez, pour cela, faire fixer la journée qui doit toujours être l'élément de toutes les mesures". - Lower left corner torn off (not touching text); some brownstaining, otherwise a perfect sheet. 102:103 mm. Mounted on a single page (8vo) together with a contemporary handwritten transcription. Notes on the Battle of Voltri (1796): "Rampon et la Harpe [-] par le Gal en chef lui meme la deroute fut complette tout le corps d'Argenteau fut ecrase dans le tem[p]s queu Beaulieu descendait a Voltri ou il ne trouvait plus personne" (transl.: "Rampon and la Harpe - by the commanding General himself - defeat was complete - all of d'Argenteau's corps was erased while Beaulieu descended to Voltri, where he found nobody left"). - With a certification of authenticity at the bottom: "corrections de la campagne d'Italie écrit par Napoleon à Briars, isle Ste helene en 1815 / Cte. de Las Cases". Emmanuel, comte de Las Cases and his son accompanied the former emperor to Saint Helena. There, he acted informally but very assiduously as his secretary, taking down numerous notes of his conversations which thereafter took form in the famous "Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène".

Rare draft for a letter to his Minister of Finances, Charles Gaudin (1756-1841), asking for more information about aid to the veterans of Piedmont as they would soon be his subjects in the newly created Kingdom of Italy: "Monsieur Gaudin, je vous renvoie vos états sur les biens des camps de vétérans en Piémont. Je désire que vous me fassiez un rapport d'une page, qui me fasse connaitre 'la loi a affecté' la quotité des biens que la loi a affectés aux camps de vétérans dans la 27è division militaire, combien il y en a déjà de désignées pour ce service et ce qu'il y manque" [Mister Gaudin, I return your budget of the assets of the veterans' camps in Piedmont to you. I want you to compile a one page report for me that informs me 'the law has affected' the share of the assets that the law has affected in the veterans' camps of the 27th military division, how many have already been appointed for this service and what it lacks"]. - Because of the many corrections the letter was never signed or sent. Every line has been partly crossed out or modified by the Emperor. - Napoleon's coronation as Emperor of the French had only taken place three months prior at which occasion the deputies of the Italian Republic officially offered the crown of Italy to him. On March 17, 1805 the political transformation of the Italian Republic to the Kingdom of Italy (1805-1814) was put into effect. The letter to Charles Gaudin relates to this process as Napoleon wanted to be fully informed about the financial obligations to the veterans of Piedmont, his new subjects.

490 x 350 mm. Blank form. Naval patent for an unidentified American boat, counter-signed by trade secretary Jean-Baptiste Henry Collin (1776-1837), state secretary Pierre Antoine Noël Bruno comte Daru (1767-1829), naval secretary Denis Decrès (1761-1820), and the director general of customs. Fine document from the age of the Napoleonic Wars, when the English army had occupied the Iberian Peninsula, fighting against Napoléon's troops, and field marshal Wellington was about to commence his final (and ultimately successful) attack. The present letter patent was issued by the French consul in Charlestown, New York, Boston or Baltimore and permitted American ships to move more or less freely toward France. The British warships were blocking the U.S. ports and obstructing American trade with France - one of the causes for the War of 1812, not resolved until December 1814. - Large reinforced tears to folds; slight edge damage, otherwise in good condition. Left edge trimmed, touching the printed text of the counter-leaf.

Châtelain, malgré mon peu d'influence sur les ministres, je le recommanderai, j'avoir le lettre à mon sécretaire à Paris pour qu'il la remettre lui même [...]. - Nach der Machtübernahme seines Cousins Napoleon III. wurde der "Prinz Napoléon" genannte Politiker General des französischen Heers. 1859 erwarb er am Genfer See die Domäne La Bergerie in Prangins (Schweiz), die bereits bis 1827 seinem Onkel Joseph Bonaparte, dem älteren Bruder Napoleons I., als Zubehör zu dessen Exilsitz Schloss Prangins gehört hatte. Ab 1862 ließ er sich dort die prachtvolle "Villa de Prangins" errichten, die er jedoch 1870 wieder veräußerte, woraufhin er sich auf einem verbliebenen Teil des Guts eine neue, bescheidenere Villa "La Bergerie de Prangins" erbauen ließ; diese diente ihm und seinen Nachfahren ab 1886 als Exilsitz.

Mon sentiment est qu'on ne peut en avoir qu'une. Républicain on ne peut saluer qu'avec respect la mémoire de ce milicien de la liberté […] Quant à Crispi sur lequel vous m'interrogez aussi c'est l'antipode de Garibaldi [...] Il n'a pas fait la triple alliance, ce renouvellement de la sainte alliance, cette croisade des rois contre les peuples: elle était faite par d' autres que lui lorsqu'il est arrivé au pouvoir. Daß Du mir durch Edel u. Redwitz Gruß sagen laßen wolltest, freut mich, u. ich danke Dir für die freundliche Abhilfe, die Deinem Auftrage zu Grund lag; aber es hat keiner dieser Herren Deinen Auftrag befolgt, ich war ihnen eine mißliebige Person, weil ich am letzten Landtag nicht Chorus machte mit der großen Attaque gegen die Minister [...] Ich habe im Sept v. This noted concert pianist performed nationally throughout the 1920s and '30s; her husband was General Edwin M. "Pa" Watson 1883-1945 close friend and assistant to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. IPS 8" X 10" n.p. 1925. Very good. Faint creasing near bottom barely visible. Sepia-tone half-length portrait of Nash playing piano nicely signed and inscribed by her in black ink at lower right to a Chicago music school founder: "To John Leiser -- / Sincere Greetings / Frances Nash / 1925." A fine image by noted photographer Herman Heyn 1866-1943 the noted German-born portrait photographer remembered for portraits of William Jennings Bryan William Howard Taft and hundreds of Native American portraits with his blind-embossed "Heyn / Omaha" imprint at lower right. unknown

Dankt Josef Wesely für ihr übersandte Wünsche (zum Geburtstag). - Anfangs Bürgerschullehrerin für Deutsch, Geographie und Geschichte in Brünn, betätigte sich Emilie Naske, gelegentlich auch unter dem Pseudonym Emmy Leitner, als freie Schriftstellerin und arbeitete an verschiedenen Brünner, Prager und Wiener Zeitungen mit. Sie veröffentlichte Romane wie ‘Die Chiromantin’ (1926) sowie eine Sammlung von Kurzgeschichten in mährischer Mundart. Vgl. Kosch IX, 1187 (Leitner).

This Scottish portrait and landscape painter friend of Walter Scott and Robert Burns is often called the "father of Scottish landscape painting; as an architect he designed Edinburgh's Dean Bridge and part of St. Bernard's Well; his many children were all artists of note as well. Autograph Fragment unsigned 3�" X 1" irregular tipped to contemporary 6" X 4" sheet n.p. n.y. Curious and comical note perhaps a postscript clipped from a letter reading in full: "the sooner the Better / a Bad pen and worse / Ink." At lower left of the heavy stock sheet to which this is lightly tipped an admirer notes his name and fame. unknown

So we have named Tuesday by the same train as you & Goodall came by. I trust Tuesday will suit you and that the day may be everything we could desire [...] There is such a grand Ruin of a Great Beech here in the Park I have to show you [...] Gilbert will be delighted with it, I am sure [...]". - Auf Briefpapier mit gepr. Zusammen (2+2+1=) 5 SS. auf 3 Bll. Qu.-(gr.-)8vo. An den Buchhändler Willi Henne wegen Leseabenden: "[...] Ich wäre grundsätzlich gern bereit und bitte Sie, mir gelegentlich selbst zu schreiben, damit wir uns über die Bedingungen verständigen können [...]" (a. d. Br. v. 20. III. 1954). - Als Offizier im Ersten Weltkrieg schwer verwundet, wurde Eckart von Naso 1916 Sekretär bei seinem Onkel Georg Graf von Hülsen-Haeseler, dem Generalintendanten am Berliner Staatlichen Schauspielhaus, wo er dann seit 1918 als Dramaturg, zeitweise als Regisseur und schließlich bis 1945 als Chefdramaturg unter Gustaf Gründgens tätig war. 1950 wurde er Dozent an der Filmakademie in Wiesbaden und 1953/54 Chefdramaturg an den Städtischen Bühnen Frankfurt a. M., später dann in Stuttgart. Sein literarisches Werk umfaßt Dramen und Romane sowie Novellen um historische Gestalten und Begebenheiten, besonders aus dem alten Preußen. - Die Briefe auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Briefkopf.

Belehnungsbrief für ein Häuschen zu Gunsten des Sekretärs Conradt Koeten nach 18 treuen Dienstjahren, da dieser bessere Wohnverhältnisse für seine Familie brauche und dieselbe Gnade zuvor schon einem anderen Hofbediensteten, Claus Schreiber, zuteilgeworden war: "[...] Er unser Secretarius [solle] aber darjegen schuldigk sein [...], solch Häußlein in Bau und Beßerung zuhalten, Unß und der unßerigen dafür (wie er ohne daß vermöge seiner Bestallung zu thun schuldig ist) getreu, gehorsamb und gewertigk zu sein [...] da er auch ohn dieser Behausung zur seiner beßeren commoditet etwas Hauptweßliches bauen würde [...]". - Mit Regest verso. Es fehlt das Siegel; die Plica bis auf den mittleren Bereich abgetrennt (die Einschnitte zur Anbringung des Siegels eingerissen). Leicht braun- und wasserfleckig.

An König Wilhelm III. der Niederlande (1817-90) mit Bekanntgabe der Vermählung seiner Schwester Prinzessin Sophia von Nassau (1836-1913) mit Prinz Oskar II. von Schweden (1829-1907): "Nach den wohlwollenden Gesinnungen, wovon Eure Königliche Majestät mir schon vielfache Beweise zu geben geruht haben, darf ich die Ueberzeugung hegen, daß Höchstdieselben auch, an diesem Für mich und mein Herzogliches Haus so erfreulichen Ereignisse einigen gnädigen Antheil nehmen werden [...]". - Mit kalligraph. verziertem Briefkopf und wenigen kleinen Randeinrissen.

To Neel Goldblatt of Goldblatt Brothers Inc. in Chicago: "With pleasure, I received your letter and with pleasure I send you back the stamps with my signature on each although I never think of myself as a great person in this world. The only truth in my person is that I am fighting with all my patriots to live as free people in a free country in the free democratic world. We Egyptians, believe that this [!] a very justified demand. Unfortunately the Britishers do not agree with us and wish we live [!] as slaves under their domination. Our fight, now, is to force the British to understand our case and evacuate the Canal zone and thus gain our freindship [!] instead of our hateree [!]. To realize our aim, we are ready to sacrifice our lives. This is one side of a small picture of myself and you can find, Dear Sir, that there is no greatness in it but there is truth, faith and hope [...]". - Signed as General Secretary on a letterhead printed in Arabic. The addressee was a Polish-American-Jewish collector and member of the Goldblatt family that owned Goldblatt Bros. department stores in the Midwest headquartered in Cicago. A typed English heading states Cairo's "Liberation Rally Republic Square", Tahrir Square, also the center of the demonstrations of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, a critical part of the Arab spring. In upper left corner traces of a staple. - Black and white photography (125:78 mm) added, showing Nasser waving, in the background an enormous crowd of people demonstrating.
