"La gazette des beaux arts. | Rue Vivienne, 55". - Schon frühzeitig im diplomatischen Dienst tätig, war Bludow Legationssekretär in Stockholm und Wien, später eine Zeitlang Geschäftsträger in London. Nach Rußland zurückgekehrt, wurde er auf die Empfehlung Karamsins, der ihm die Herausgabe des zwölften Bandes seiner "Geschichte des russischen Reichs" (1829) übertrug, Staatssekretär von Zar Nikolaus; nach dem Dekabristenaufstand wurde er mit der Leitung der Untersuchung betraut; 1832 wurde er Minister des Innern und 1839 Justizminister sowie Präsident der gesetzgebenden Abteilung im Reichsrat. "1842 zum Grafen erhoben, wurde Bludow auch auf andern Gebieten zu wichtigen Missionen verwendet; unter anderm ging er 1846 nach Rom, um das Konkordat, das dann 15. August 1847 ins Leben trat, zu vereinbaren. Im Besitz des besondern Vertrauens Alexanders II. nahm Bludow wie wenige andre der ältern Staatsmänner an den Reformen dieses Kaisers Anteil, vor allem an der Umgestaltung der bäuerlichen Verhältnisse. 1855 ward er an Uwarows Stelle Präsident der Akademie und 1858 Mitglied des zum Zweck der Bauernemanzipation eingesetzten Hauptkomitees, im Januar 1861 Präsident des Reichsrats und des Ministeriums. In dieser Eigenschaft unterzeichnete er 2. März 1861 die Akte, welche die definitive Aufhebung der Leibeigenschaft enthielt. Er schrieb eine Abhandlung über die letzten Tage und den Tod des Kaisers Nikolaus und veranlaßte die Herausgabe verschiedener Archivalien von historischer Bedeutung" (Meyers Konversationslexikon, 4. A., Bd. III, S. 45). - Etwas unfrisch und in den Faltungen auf der leeren Verso-Seite von Bl. 2 stärker angestaubt.

Bertelli, requesting a copy of the "New York American avec cet interview". - Due to his widely ranging personal contacts, Vladimir Bourtzeff managed to expose numerous Russian spies and agents provocateurs. "In Chicago I had the opportunity of meeting the famous Russian revolutionary Vladimir Bourtzeff. I was greatly interested in his recital of the arduous mission that had come to him of unmasking Azeff as a police spy. Azeff was undoubtedly a most exceptional phenomenon in revolutionary annals. Not that there had not been before, or since, traitors in revolutionary ranks. But Azeff was no ordinary spy, and even today the psychology of the man remains an unsolved enigma. For years he had not only been a member of the Fighting Organization of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party of Russia, but also the all-powerful head of that terrorist body. He had planned and had successfully executed numerous acts against the highest dignitaries of the Tsarist Government, and he enjoyed the absolute confidence of all his co-workers. When Bourtzeff charged Azeff, the ultra-terrorist, with being an agent of the Russian Secret Service, even the nearest friends of the accuser thought him demented. The mere suggestion of such a possibility was considered treason to the revolution, for Azeff personified the very spirit of the Russian revolutionary movement. Bourtzeff, however, was a man of dogged tenacity who possessed an unerring intuition in such matters. He had exposed a number of spies previously, and his sources of information had always proved to be entirely reliable. Yet even he underwent a long inner struggle before he could bring himself to believe in the guilt of the trusted head of the Fighting Organization The data Bourtzeff secured were incontrovertible and damned Azeff as a man who had during a period of twenty years managed to dupe the Russian Secret Service and the revolutionists at the same time. Bourtzeff succeeded in proving Azeff a traitor to both sides, and both resolved to punish Azeff by death for his monumental deceit. 5 sets of autographs laid down to album leaves, including original envelopes, numerous photo reproductions and newspaper clippings. Collection assembled by the young Uruguayan nobleman Alejandro Zorrilla de San Martin (1909-87; Foreign Affairs Minister from 1963 to 1965 and grandson of José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín, the National Poet of Uruguay) by direct application. Admiral Joaquim Cordeiro Guerra writes a full-page lettercard (June 1935) next to an image of his ship, the "São Paulo". General José Antônio Flores da Cunha (1880-1959) signs only his name, while General Pedro Aurélio de Góis Monteiro (1889-1956) signs twice (10 Sept. 1932, with 5-line inscription, and 26 Dec. 1940, with compliments). Vice-Admiral Adalberto Lara de Almeida (1885-1961) provides a caption to the image submitted by Zorrilla, as well as penning eight lines on both sides of his visiting card.

Fine collection of autographs by great bullfighters, assembled by the young Uruguayan nobleman Alejandro Zorrilla de San Martin (1909-87; Foreign Affairs Minister from 1963 to 1965 and grandson of José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín, the National Poet of Uruguay) by direct application. Rafael Guerra Bejarano (1862-1941), known as "Guerrita", signs a three-line inscription (8 Oct. 1923), as does Rodolfo Gaona Jiménez (1888-1975, signs 25 July 1925). Marcial Lalanda del Pino (1903-90), immortalized in Hemingway's "Death in the Afternoon", signs a nine-line dedication on 1 June 1926, while his cousin Pablo Lalanda Gutiérrez (1902-1936) signs the illustrated card on May 12. Ricardo Torres Reina (1879-1936), known as "Bombita", signs on 31 May 1922; Vicente Pastor y Durán, "El Chico de la blusa" (1879-1966), writes a four-line inscription on 28 July 1931. Diego Mazquiarán Torrontegui "Fortuna" (1895-1940) sends his admirer a five-line inscription on 28 April 1928. Antonio Cañero Baena (1885-1952) sends a six-line signed inscription and includes a signed original photograph (undated, but July/August 1926).

He asks for an "agreement to settle at the end of six months or a year and to allow me a dozen copies for friends. Could we manage to print without destroying the two old volumes. Of course you can take them to pieces and I will have them rebound when you have done with them [...]". He continues, "For corrections a single revise will suffice. Kindly let me have proofs in duplicate accompanied by the manuscript - which saves time [...]." He asks his opinion on illustration, and repeats that he has sketches and photographs suggesting that "perhaps the best way would be to prefix one to each volume, say Sir Charles Napier to vol. I and the photo of a Sindi girl to vol. 2 [...]". He offers to send them off at once if it suits.

Einer kleinen Bleistiftnotiz am oberen Rand der Verso-Seite von Bl. 2 zufolge dürfte es sich bei dem Minister um Adolphe Billault (1805-1863) gehandelt haben, der von 1854 bis 58 und von 1859 bis 60 das besagte Amt innehatte. - Canrobert stellte beim Staatsstreich 1851 als einer der tätigsten Gehilfen von Louis Napoleon in Paris die Ruhe wieder her, kämpfte im Krimkrieg und im Sardinischen Krieg und stand im Deutsch-Französischen Krieg an der Spitze der Mobilgarden im Lager von Châlons. Später übernahm er, "da er der zügellosen Menge wegen seiner Unpopularität nicht Herr werden konnte, unter Bazaines Oberbefehl das Kommando des VI. Armeekorps der Rheinarmee und kämpfte am 16. August in der Schlacht von Mars-la-Tour und am 18. August bei St.-Privat, das ihm entrissen wurde. In der Festung Metz eingeschlossen und bei der Kapitulation gefangen, begab er sich nach Kassel zum Kaiser Napoleon III. und kehrte erst nach dem Friedensschluß nach Frankreich zurück" (Wikipedia, Abfrage v. 21. Writing as bishop of Vigevano in Lombardy, to the Dominican Raimondo Capizucchi (1615-91), who held the office of "maestro del sacro palazzo apostolico" since 1654 and would be made cardinal in 1681, concerning the imminent creation of Lorenzo Mayers Caramuel (1617-83) as bishop of Castellamare: "Son tantos los favores que V. S. R.ma ha hecho y haze siempre a Caramuel, que el por no ser ingrato, y viendo que en un sugeto no puede cumplir con lo mucho que debe, se multiplica para poder servir mejor en diversos suppuestos. Catherine de' Medici, Queen of France, wife of King Henry II of France (1519-1589).

Folio (320 x 235 mm). 1 p., with address panel to verso. To secretary of state Nicolas de Neufville, seigneur de Villeroy. Catherine de' Médici was one of the great female letter writers of the Renaissance, drafting many of her political letters (as here) in her own hand. She had been Queen consort of France as wife of Henry II, but rose to political power after his death in 1559. She stood behind the brief reign of her eldest son Francis II and, upon his death only a year later, was appointed regent to her second son Charles IX (then only ten years old). He died in 1574, leaving Catherine to preside over the chaotic reign of her third son Henry III, a period of terrible civil and religious war in France. Despite the turmoil, Catherine was a remarkable administrator in a political landscape in which she could trust almost no one. The present letter, drafted in her own hand (in itself remarkable), is typical of her direct style. She informs the secretary of state, Villeroy, one of the few members of government with whom she was intimate, of her wish to grant the benefice of the Abbey of Chailly (on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau) to the marquis de Saint-Sorlin, son of the Duchess de Nemours (and later duc de Nemours and Henry I of Savoy). She also makes provision for the benefice of Martigny-le-Comte (Burgundy) and arranges benefices for the sons of the statesman Pomponne de Bellièvre (who later became chancellor of France). The letter is apparently unpublished. It does not appear in the collected "Lettres de Catherine de Médicis" (1880-1943, 10 vols.), though a letter of 13 November 1581 (vol. VII, p. 415) addressed to the duc d’Épernon, on the same subject, allows us to date ours with some confidence. - Old folds, light browning, loss to blank left-hand margin, just touching a word of text and possibly the date, but avoiding the signature, neatly repaired, three further neat repairs to verso. 44 pp. ½ in-folio, montées sur onglets, reliées en un volume. Demi-reliure à petit coin en veau glacé noir, dos lisse avec titre argent. "Ainsi qu'il est précise en page de garde, il s'agit du "scénario pour un film, Ballet ou dessin animé". - L'auteur expose rapidement le thème: "[...] Neptune a épousé sur le tard Vénus. - On ne rigole pas tous les jours dans le ménage des Dieux [...]". La sauvagerie des hommes massacre allégrement le peuple de Neptune. Les plus pitoyables victimes sont les malheureux bébés phoques, jusqu'au jour où une petite sirène, Pryntyl, inversera, par tout le poids d'une tragédie, le déroulement de ce "jeu" cruel. - Célèbre pour ses romans, Céline s'essaya tout d'abord au théâtre, notamment avec L'église, pièce écrite en 1926, éditée en 1933 et jouée pour la première fois à Lyon en 1936. Il composa également des scénarios ("Secret dan l'île, 1936; "Arletty, jeune fille dauphinoise", 1948) ainsi que des ballets ("Foudres et flèches", 1948). "Scandal aux Abysses" fut composé entre 1938 et 1944 et publié chez Denoël en novembre 1950. Si le rôle de la sirène Pryntyl fut proposé à Arletty, le projet n'aboutit cependant pas et il fallut attendre 1979 pour qu'un extrait de se texte soit représenté au théâtre du Lucernaire (Paris) sous le titre "Une heur avec L. F. Céline" (spectacle créé par Stéphane Varègues et Catherine Morelle).

To Guillaume de Blégiers, Belgian consul in Marseille, thanking him for a positive reaction to a conference on the Suez Canal that had been organized by Charles-Roux in his function as president of the Suez Canal Company. He also thanks Blegiers for sending him an article on the controversy surrounding a potential pioneering role of the Austrian engineer Alois Negrelli in conceptualizing the Suez Canal and gives his opinion: "Je suis très sensible à l'attention que vous avez eue de m'adresser vos félicitations pour ma conférence sur le Canal de Suez et je vous remercie très vivement. - J'ai lu par ailleurs la note sur Negrelli, que vous avez bien voulu m'adresser joint à votre lettre. Je connais bien la controverse à laquelle il y est fait allusion. Cette controverse d'ailleurs a été surtout exploitée pendant de nombreuses années par les Italiens, qui ont toujours revendiqué Négrelli comme un des leurs, ce qui est évidemment entièrement erroné." - Together with a carbon copy of Blégier's original letter. - On stationery of the "Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez".

I: À Hyacinte Pilorge. Une page autographe in-8, Genève, dimanche 9 octobre [1831], adresse au dos. Déchirure avec manque en bout de deux lignes de texte. - II: À un vicaire. Une page signée in-8, mardi 15 mars 1842. I: À propos d'une chanson de Béranger qui lui est dédiée. Il a écrit la veille à son "cher Hyacinte, pour [lui] dire d'effacer cette phrase dans [sa] réponse à M. de Béranger, s'il en étoit encore temps à l'impression chez Ladvocat: Si vos sujets sont du moment, votre style ne l'est pas, dans l'anarchie de la nouvelle école [...]". Il annonce son arrivée à Paris, le 16 et "aimerai[t] que l'on retarde "d'un ou deux jours la publication, si faire se pouvoit [...]". - Alors que Chateaubriand, après avoir refusé de reconnaître à la chambre des pairs la légitimité du pouvoir de Louis-Philippe, s'était quelque temps réfugié en Suisse, l'écrivain Pierre-Jean de Béranger avait fait paraître une chanson, "à M. de Chateaubriand", qui commençait ainsi: "Chateaubriand, pourquoi fuir ta patrie, fuir son amour notre encens et nos soins? N'entends tu pas la France qui s'écrie: mon beau ciel pleure une étoile de moins". La chanson de Béranger et la Réponse de Chateaubriand allaient paraître dans Paris ou le livre des Cent-et-un, une publication du libraire éditeur Ladvocat qui connut quinze volumes de 1832 à 1834. Son ambition était d'offrir une image de la vie parisienne en demandant des collaborations aux principaux écrivains de l'époque. - II: À un vicaire. Une page signée in-8, mardi 15 mars 1842. Cette seconde lettre est de la main de son secrétaire, mentionné dans la lettre "j'ai à peine pu signer ces lignes que j'ai dictées à Pilorge". Diensten auf und angenommen zu werden, und deßwegen Meine Intercession verlangen: Wie Ich um dem Herrn Grafen vor das in Mich gesezte Vertrauen nicht wenig Obligirt bin, und Mir eine Freude mache, Ihnen innige Gefälligkeiten zu bezeugen; Alßo soll es gewiß an Mir nicht ermangeln, bey Ihro Kayßerl. August Friedrich von Spörcken (1698-1776) nahm als Offizier der kurhannoverschen Truppen an habsburgischer Seite am österreichischen Erbfolgekrieg (1740-48) teil. - Auf Briefpapier mit Trauerrand; mehrere kleine Löcher in der Blattmitte, kein Textverlust.

Churchill, Winston S., British statesman (1874-1965).

Folio. 2 ff. Counter-signed by the publisher George Harrap and witnessed by Churchill's private secretary, Kathleen Hill. Folio 1 initialed by Churchill. Memorandum of agreement between Churchill and his publisher for the rights to publish Churchill's "Europe Since the Russian Revolution". One of the few literary projects that Churchill ever abandoned, his projected work on Europe since the Russian Revolution would surely have been a fascinating addition to the Churchillian canon. This contract with Harrap called for the author to receive the generous amount of £13,500, payable in installments: £1,500 up front; £2,000 on the delivery of the first part of the manuscript; £3,000 on the delivery of the second; and £7,000 on delivery of the third. These payments would be in lieu of any royalties. The contract calls for the first portion of the manuscript to be delivered by no later than June 1941, with Churchill obligated to return his advance with interest for failure to do so. Since this is precisely what happened, this paragraph is boldly marked thrice in pencil in the margin. - Churchill's demanding obligations as member of the War Cabinet and then as Prime Minister and saviour of Britain in 1940 did not leave Harrap in a forbearing or forgiving mood when Churchill tried to get out of this contract. Indeed, his growing stature made him all the more valuable as a literary commodity. As called for in paragraph 10 of this document, the matter went to arbitration, with Churchill arguing that he had completely lost interest in the subject of Europe since the Russian Revolution. In any case, he was in no position to do anything about it: "I suppose I have not read a dozen books in the last five years." Besides, he added, writing about Russian relations might injure the delicate wartime alliance with Stalin. More than anything else, however, Harrap's hardball tactics annoyed him. When the publisher offered new contracts with much more generous terms, Churchill curtly refused, saying "I do not want to have any further dealings of any kind with them." Realizing he was beat, Harrap unconditionally surrendered on 7 September 1944, saying "it is distasteful to us, whether we are right or not, to litigate this matter with a man to whom every one of us is so much indebted" (cf. Reynolds, In Command of History, pp. 19-20). Churchill gave back the £1,500 advance with interest and went on to publish his war memoirs with Macmillan and Cassell's. - Somewhat dusty and frayed.

4to. 4 pp. (120 lignes environ) & 3 pp. Très bel article de 4 pages manuscrites, avec corrections auquel on joint les épreuves, 3 pages avec de nombreuses corrections et une note "2-3 sept. 14 jour du départ pour Bordeaux". Dans cet article, Clémenceau évite les critiques "qui [lui] ont paru plus dangereuses qu'efficaces dans le moment présent". Il mentionne les premiers mensonges allemands affichant "sur les murs de Valenciennes un placard pour annoncer une grande victoire de ses alliés" quand l'Autriche subit une lourde défaite. On y voit aussi le jusqu'au-boutiste qui s'affirme, car "nous avons une population mâle valide où nous pouvons puiser encore un très long temps" et la dernière phrase se termine par les mots du titre: "A chacun son devoir et que nul ne s'arrête avant d'avoir fait le don complet de lui-même jusqu'au bout, jusqu'au bout". - Exceptionnel document. - Petites déchirures sans manque sur les épreuves, 2 des 4 pages manuscrites coupées anciennement en 2 entre des paragraphes. L'article est écrit au dos de feuilles à en-tête du Sénat.

"A monsieur le Duc d'En-face": Très bel article de 5 pages manuscrites, avec corrections auquel on joint les épreuves, 5 pages avec de très nombreuses corrections. Dans cet article, il semble qu'il s'adresse au (3e) duc de Blacas (En-face rimant avec Blacas est peut-être aussi une manière de le nommer), Guy-Pierre de Blacas d'Aulps. C'est le seul personnage qui peut correspondre à ces lignes. Clémenceau s'adresse à ce député qui eut "le comte de Chambord, Mac Mahon, le duc de Broglie, Batbie, la duchesse d'Uzès et ses millions, Boulanger et sa revue, Briand, consul à pied, Poincaré votre dernière union". - Très bel article, d'un ton légèrement moqueur sur les attitudes, paroles et amitiés du duc d'En-face. Il avait prévu que le duc, qui avait soutenu Poincaré, le critiquerait et lui avait dit "Qui sait? Je le défendrai peut-être, un jour, contre vous". - Exceptionnel document. Une page manuscrite coupée anciennement en 2 entre des paragraphes. Nombreuses phrases modifiées dans les epreuves.

Commendone, Giovanni Francesco, cardinal (1524-1584).

A catchphrase of radical Lutheranism, apparently quoted ironically by the Cardinal to expose the extremism of his opponents: "Incipit hareticus fieri, qui scripta Lutheri / Carpit, et infernum, ni resipiscat, adit" ("He who attacks Luther oversteps the threshold of heresy, and, unless he repents, goes to hell"). The Strasbourg Protestant theologian and Hebrew scholar Tobias Speccer (1563-1622) quoted the lines (in a slightly more extensive version, with variation) in his essay, "De vera Iesu Christi Ecclesia & Pontificia Romana opposita", published in 1617 in an academic volume celebrating the centenary of the Ninety-Five Theses, the primary catalyst for the Protestant Reformation. In this context, they give evidence of the extreme reverence Luther enjoyed among his disciples more than seven decades after his death. - Cardinal Commendone had performed various papal missions to the courts of Protestant rulers. The numerous letters which he wrote during his 1560/61 mission to Germany to invite the Catholic and Protestant Estates to the re-opened Council of Trent present a picture of the ecclesiastical conditions in the country during those times. - Some worming. 18th-century authentification note ("Autographum Cardinalis Commendone") in red ink at the foot of the clipped page.
