Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Born Charles Auguste Émile Durand in Lille, the painter adopted the name "Carolus-Duran" upon moving to Paris in 1853. From 1870 onwards he applied himself almost entirely to portraiture and opened his own studio on Boulevard du Montparnasse, where he also operated a painting school. - Lower left corner slightly creased.
