ill., br. Mario Bava (Sanremo, 1914 - Roma, 1980) in vita fu considerato solo un abile artigiano specializzato nell'horror. Dopo la morte è stato oggetto di una crescente rivalutazione internazionale, e promosso al rango di autore. Sulla base di fonti finora mai prese in esame, questo libro (giunto alla terza edizione e completamente riveduto) analizza il suo ruolo di innovatore all'interno del contesto produttivo italiano, ma anche il carattere sottilmente autodistruttivo della sua opera. Tra i suoi film: "La maschera del demonio" (1960), "I tre volti della paura" (1963), "Operazione paura" (1966), "Il rosso segno della follia" (1968-70), "Ecologia del delitto (1971)", "Cani arrabbiati" (girato nel 1974 e uscito postumo nel 1996).
