Early Women in Sports
Amateur Women's Boxing Photo Archive 1920s-40s
1920. Archive of eight black and white silver gelatin photographs of amateur women's boxing matches. Three photographs show women boxing in an outdoor ring clad in their undergarments or swimsuits. Spectators coaches and referees are not visible in these photos and they are likely amateur matches between friends or a boxing club. Based on hair and undergarment style these likely date to the 1940s. Two show women in swimsuits typical of the 1930s posing in boxing gloves in a residential setting. Two of these photographs appear to be staged for a film or photoshoot with opponents wearing matching boxing uniforms bobbed hair and dramatic film makeup typical of the 1920s. Finally there is a photograph of women in a makeshift indoor ring one brought to her knees by a recent blow. Women's boxing has had a highly controversial history and is still banned professionally in many countries around the world. Exhibition matches in England in the 20s were routinely barred for being "vulgar" and "disgraceful". These photographs document women defying gender roles and social norms to participate in a traditionally masculine sport for their own enjoyment. One photograph has two significant chips to the lower right hand side not affecting subject matter. Overall archive is in very good condition. Early Photo Archive of Women's Sports 1890s to 1920s
1890. Archive of 10 silver gelatin photos of various international women's sports from the late 1890s to the 1920s. The sports included are mountaineering croquet bicycling club swinging and horseback riding. Photos measure between 2" x 3" and 3.5" x 5.5". The late 19th century began a rapid emergence of women in sports as prior they were thought to be physically too weak to play. While wealthy women partook in more leisurely sports in private clubs or at home it wasn't until the 1920s where women were deemed capable of playing in competitive sports. One original photo postcard shows a large group of women in early 1900s attire with their croquet mallets and wickets with the text beneath in French implying the team is of a women's school in Chartes. Two sepia photos depict women in early 1900s blouses skirts and straw hats riding atop bicycles. One of the photos shows three at the starting line of a racing track an audience of men and women stand behind. Two smaller photos show a line of women in early 1920s dress with what looks like a sort of Scandinavian flag with a Nordic cross in the background. One photo shows them at the starting line and the second shows them running in competition. Two photos show female mountaineers one in late 1800s or very early 1900s attire posed professionally with a backpack and ice pick swung over her shoulder. A written inscription en recto "Rõõmsaid Nelipühi!" meaning "Happy Pentecost!" in Estonian. Another shot shows a woman mid-climb looking down upon the photographer while holding onto the cliffside. An earlier cabinet card from the late 1800s shows two women and a man standing next to tall white horse with a little girl sat atop. A more unique photo from the early 1900s shows a portrait of a woman with two clubs in hand for a less popular sport which later was added to the Olympic games called club swinging. The last photo depicts a girl in what can be assumed as basketball attire of the early 1920s due to her "basketball bloomers" and headpiece typical of the sport during the 1920s. This archive celebrates the achievement of women in what are considered physically laborious activities breaking the intrinsic biases of the era. Some photos have minor wear to edges and corners overall they are in very good condition with images being crisp and clear. unknown

The photographs capture three central figures in mid-century women's boxing-Barbara Buttrick Phyllis Kugler and Jo-Ann Hagen-whose careers intersected in exhibition bouts and championship contests during a period when women's participation in boxing required legal and promotional negotiation. The material provides visual evidence of competitive matches and ringside moments at a time when women's boxing was only beginning to secure formal licensing in certain jurisdictions.
Nine black-and-white silver gelatin photographs each approximately 5 x 7 inches depicting in-ring action and between-round scenes. Three images show a bout between Hagen and Kugler with both fighters captured mid-exchange in close quarters gloves raised and bodies angled forward in offensive and defensive stances. Five photographs document a match between Kugler and Buttrick likely connected to their 1957 championship contest in San Antonio Texas where the fighters successfully petitioned for a state boxing license for women; scenes include active exchanges as well as ring positioning under overhead lighting. One image shows Buttrick seated in her corner resting between rounds attended by seconds just outside the frame. Across the group the fighters wear standard boxing attire of the period and the ring environment-ropes canvas and audience proximity-appears consistent with mid-century professional venues.
Produced during a period when women's boxing was contested both culturally and legally the archive documents early efforts to legitimize female participation in a sport historically restricted to men. Buttrick's victory in Texas marked a milestone in the recognition of women's championship boxing while Kugler's extensive bout record and Hagen's career-long rivalry with both fighters illustrate the development of a competitive circuit. All three figures were later inducted into the International Women's Boxing Hall of Fame underscoring their role in establishing the sport's foundations. Light surface wear consistent with handling with strong contrast and clear detail throughout. Overall in very good condition. unknown
