This work by an artist who did covers and some other work for the magazine consists of two full-page drawings with mortised rectangles for the text. It was used to illustrate Gordon Basssett's angling tall tale "The Big Snake of Harwich Swamps" pp. 50-51 of the April 1934 issue of The Sportsman. In the magazine the drawing was poorly reproduced and appears faint and washed out with much loss of detail--the original is clear bold and handsome.<br/><br/>This is a particularly interesting item for two reasons: it illustrates a rare piece of original fiction--or near fiction--of which The Sportsman printed very little and it represents the relatively rare use of a drawing. Most of the magazine's illustrations with the exception of little editorial vignettes many done by Smith and the occasional reproduction of a work of sporting art were photographs. Thomas 'Tom' or 'Gentleman' SMITH 1790-1878 inventor Master of the Craven Hounds Pytchley Hounds Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire author of 'Life of a Fox' 1843; 'Extracts from the Diary of a Huntsman' 1838; and 'Sporting Incidents in the life of another Tom Smith' 1867.<br/>A collection of 136 autograph letters to Tom Smith from British nobility politicians and sportsmen concerning hunting 47 letters of course; shooting 6; fishing 5; farming in general 10; but many dealing with the various causes Smith supported and inventions he came up with after his retirement as the 'Master' of the 'Hambledon' hunt in 1852: these include a 'locomotive battery on common roads propelled by steam' proto steam-punk tank 23 letters; a plan to recycle London sewage and build an Embankment beside the Thames 9; a plan to raise a mounted volunteer Rifle Corps 17; a plan to improve the morals of the poor who lived in the countryside by ensuring that every cottage had at least three bedrooms 16; a lightweight plough that Smith invented 4; the 'Iron Duke' bit 1; improvements to the pier at Ryde 1; Smith's theory about how Stonehenge was erected 1. In addition there are also 28 letters of a more general nature. Sm. 8vo., ?Fourth Edition, pin holes in front free endpaper and half-title, some light marginal age-staining; original boards, boards and backstrip lettered in black, neatly recased, a very good, firm copy. With 3pp publisher's catalogue at end, and two small items of related ephemera loosely inserted. 'This volume meets a want long felt. Vegetables, Fruits, etc, constitute the half of our daily food: the present work is upon the best possible preparation of this half. Cookery-books exist in abundance; but they relate almost exclusively to the preparation of dishes from animal food' (Publisher's advertisement). Smith's delightful compilation was first published in 1866. There was a second issue in 1876 and a third in 1884, so this is probably the fourth edition. The last edition may be that of 1890. Very scarce, especially in this condition.
