West Leonard
Collection of Four Autograph Letters Signed "Leonard West" to R.B. Marston editor of the Fishing Gazette August to December 1912 concerning printing and publishing The Natural Trout Fly and Its Imitation and preparation of the deluxe copies
Ravenhead St. Helens England: Published by the Author 1912. Pen and ink on paper. 15 pp. total. 1 vols. 12mo. Green buckram portfolio. Letters generally fine. Book: original olive cloth a trifle worn spine faded else fine. Pen and ink on paper. 15 pp. total. 1 vols. 12mo. West to Marston on producing and selling The Natural Trout Fly. Fascinating clutch of letters from Leonard West discussing the production and early sales of The Natural Trout Fly and Its Imitation now recognized as one of the classic works of pre-war English angling literature with information on the deluxe edition containing hand-tied flies. The recipient R.B. Marston author of Walton and the Earlier Angler Authors and the 1901 Supplement to the Bibliotheca Piscatoria was the influential editor of the Fishing Gazette for many years.<br/><br/><br/><br/>- The first letter 3 pp. is dated 14 August 1912 and begins "Herewith I have the pleasure in enclosing review copy of my book 'The Natural Trout Fly & Its Imitation' & hope you will find the volume worthy of a favorable review . I think the printers deserve a good word for the way they have turned out the plates ." Docketed with a note in Marston's hand "See my note in FG Aug. 24 1912 RBM."<br/><br/>- The second letter dated 23 August thanks Marston for a "very handsome" Note in the Fishing Gazette see clipping inserted in the book and discusses other early notices: "The 'Scotsman' gives me a good word shot but quite O.K. The Sporting & Dramatic 'have given instructions for it to be well reviewed & request permission to reproduce one of the plates' That for an outsider seems going it pretty strong - does it not . I have unloaded 100 up to now & sent for more." West also details progress on the edition de luxe "My leisure at present is occupied in dressing flies & trying to get others up to concert pitch . I have booked 19 E. de luxe"<br/><br/>- The third letter 2 pp. dated 21 October notes that West is sending Marston "the edition de luxe of my book & hope you will like the get up & also the flies therein. The demand has been much greater than the supply so there will be little difficulty in disposing of a copy if desired at a premium. Other copies should all be sent out in the next fortnight . The ordinary edition is quietly going out all the time & hosts of appreciative letters are received not only from English customers but from France & America also." Docketed see F.G. note Oct. 26/12.<br/><br/>- the fourth letter 4 pp. dated 12 December 1912 discusses sales of the book: "Sales are moving all the time lowest number sent off in any week being 10 & the average being 31.76 per week. I do no know if a "proper" publisher would consider this satisfactory but possibly he might not talk to his customers in the blunt way I do to some of mine!" West also discusses two flies Orange Partridge and Snipe & Purple: "but what is a snipe & purple It is over thirty years since old Joe Moses a well known North country catcher of fish shewed me how to make it . but not dressed as now sold but thusly details & sketch follow keep it thin both in body thorax & legs." West adds a note at the top "P.S. What about the Hon. D. Fearing - his copy - of the Ed. de luxe"<br/><br/>With a copy of the printed book Marston's Occasional Note "Send Your Money!" from the Fishing Gazette for 24 August 1912 clipped and tipped in to front pastedown.<br/><br/><br/><br/>Choice group of letters with substantial content and an important association. Westchester
Two photograph albums containing 165 photos including a few duplicates some captioned mainly of scenic fishing or hunting subjects taken in northern Westchester NY County and other regions Vicinity of Bedford-Croton
n.p. 1910. the images mostly 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches and inset to the album two per page. 2 vols. 8vo each photo approximately 6 1/2 x 10 inches. One album in original green cloth slightly worn the other in 3/4 red calf a little rubbed spine gone. A few photographs faded one or two with slight blemishes but overall a fine collection. Each album is housed in a new grey cloth protective slipcase with chemise and crimson morocco spine label. the images mostly 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches and inset to the album two per page. 2 vols. 8vo each photo approximately 6 1/2 x 10 inches. Hunting and Fishing in Westchester 1900. Refuting the rule that the family photo album is invariably an icon of transcendent uninterest this collection of amateur photographs is a thoroughly beguiling one. The prints mostly in sepia record the happy idle moments of a prosperous family who lived or vacationed in the Bedford-Croton area of New York's Westchester County. Scenes include "On road to Bedford Station" hunting scenes on the "Croton River at Croton Falls" "Kisco River" and "Bronx River" etc. Subjects include some excellent shots of the wild surrounding countryside wildlife family members doing interesting things hunters or anglers displaying their trophies some posed "gag" shots and a host of other scenes. Agreeably the photos are not pasted down but slid into card mounts enabling them to be removed or rearranged. To turn the pages of these albums is to immerse onself in the scenes and pleasures of an easy less complicated day: a nostalgic and tranquilizing piece of delightful Americana. unknown books
