Fine. - One page with 14 autographs penned on a gilt-edged cream-colored sheet measuring 10-3/4 inches high by 8-3/4 inches wide removed from the guest book of Grace Bristed Jackson and C. D. Jackson. Dated "January 1st 1957" the signatures are identified along the top as those of guests present at the "Hungary Day - Athletes" dinner held at the Dakota in New York City prior to their departure on the "Hungarian Freedom Tour" of 59 cities organized by Sports Illustrated magazine. Near fine. <p>The dinner was held in New York City prior to the athletes' departing on the Hungarian Freedom Tour of 59 cities.<p>Charles Douglas Jackson known as "C.D." and his wife Grace Bristed Jackson hosted parties and events at their apartment in the Dakota. Jackson worked on and off at Time magazine in an administrative capacity for many years and was made vice president of Time Inc. in 1940. He was periodically sent on various diplomatic missions by Eisenhower. He also found time to serve on the boards of several organizations including the Boston Symphony Orchestra the Free Europe Committee and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.<p>Of the 14 signatures we've been able to identify the following which are listed in the the order in which they appear on the page:<p>The first to sign is Lidia Domolky the Hungarian fencer who won an individual World title at Rome in 1955. She competed in the 1956 1960 1964 and 1968 Olympics winning one gold and two silver medals. She and her husband fellow fencer Jozsef Sakovics defected during the Sports Illustrated tour. However they both returned to Hungary after a year.<p>Signing next is gymnast Marta Nagy who defected and enrolled at Colorado. There she continued competing in and coaching gymnastics.<p>The fourth signature is that of the fencer Jeno Eugene Hamori who won a gold medal in the team event at Melbourne. He was on the U.S. team in Tokyo in 1964.<p>Tour manager Jim Belsey is the next to sign.<p>The sixth autograph is that of the rowing coxswain Robert Zimonyi who defected and became a U.S. citizen in 1962. With American teams he won an Olympic gold medal in 1964 and a gold medal in the 1967 Pan American games.<p>The eighth autograph is that of the Olympic and World championship gold medal sabre fencer Daniel Magay. In the 1956 Melbourne Olympics he was a member of the Olympic gold medal winning team in the Saber team competition. After the Olympics he defected to the U.S. where he continued his success winning gold medals in the 1957 1958 and 1961 U.S. Individual Championships.<p>The ninth signature is that of the fencer Attila Keresztes who won a gold medal in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics in the sabre team competition. After defecting he represented the U.S. in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.<p>Following Keresztes is the signature of Gyorgy Jekelfalussy-Piller 1899-1960. In the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics he won 2 gold medals in the individual and team sabre fencing events. In a period of only six years he won 10 Hungarian Championships six with the sabre and four with the foil. After coaching the Hungarian fencing team at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 he defected to the United States.<p> In theThe fencer Bela Rerrich is the eleventh to sign the guest book. He won a silver medal in the team epee event at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He defected and eventually settled in Sweden.<p>The last signature we've been able to identify is that of Marie McCrum secretary to C.D. Jackson.<p>The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 started as a nationwide popular uprising against the Soviet controlled government of the Hungarian People's Republic. Starting as a student protest the uprising lasted from October 23 to November 10 1956. On November 4th 1956 Soviet tanks rolled into the streets supported by Soviet troops who killed thousands in the brutal repression of the revolt. A headline in a Darwin Australia newspaper was the first thing which Hungarian athletes competing in the Melbourne Olympics heard about the Soviet Union's brutal invasion of their country. Supported by a strong Hungarian community living in Australia 48 athletes defected many making their way to the U.S. Water polo-ists and swimmers were part of the 30 athletes who participated in the "Hungarian Freedom Tour" organized by Sports Illustrated magazine which was owned by Time Inc. During the tour there was open rebellion by 11 of the athletes against their tour sponsor Sports Illustrated magazine and tour manager Jim Belsey. Assembled by a party of men on an extended tour and hunting expedition in the area the album documents numerous locations in southwest Florida in the period immediately following the extension of the Florida Southern Railroad into the Peace River region in 1886. All of the photographs are captioned in ink and all but the first nine which were taken at Interlachen near Gainesville relate to southwest Florida. The album includes scenes of the grounds of Charles Francis Jr. at Interlachen and the residence of Goerge Long; the railway station an office car and a street scene at Trabue; views of the Hotel Punta Gorda under construction; waterfront scenes along the Punta Rassa; views of Fort Myers; a Spanish Fishing village; a "Cracker" family and their orange grove; Judge Ziba King and his house at Fort Ogden; scenes of the Myakka River Bartow and Zolfo Springs and a number of hunting and camping scenes. Nineteenth century photographic albums of Florida are very scarce; the present album shows the rural landscape of southwest Florida at the dawn of the modern age. unknown‎

By the 1920s the club holdings in the northernmost stretch of the Poconos had grown to more than 4500 acres and many members had erected cottages and a golf course and other sporting facilites had been built. Spectacular unrecorded privately printed diary recounting a hunting expedition in Kerala southern India from 27 July to 22 September 1865 "the best shikar trip I have ever had". The narrator and his companion A.M.D. bagged 43 heads of eleven different types of big game including tiger bear elephant bison chettul and others with original albumen photographs mounted and captioned in a neat hand. <br /> The unnamed narrator mentions passing hunting parties one such Brown Jones and Robinson suggests that he read Trollope when the novel appeared as a serial in the Cornhill; the terrain around Hassanoor Ghaut was familiar to him for he had planted fruit trees and roses near a camp building; mention is made also of Hamilton Brooke and Faulkener hunting the area the previous year. This may be Douglas Hamilton who in 1892 published a long retrospective 'Records of Sport in Southern India'.<br /> The narrator buys prepared photographic plates from a departing hunter who had ordered them from the Patent dry Collodion Co. of Birmingham. The two hunters were accompanied by the dog Scamp chief among a pack that included Tinker and a plucky three-legged dog Pinko both killed by a panther and bearers of cowardly deportment save for the plucky Rajii who stood by when the narrator faced bear and elephant. At times the grass was too high for a man to get through easily.<br /> Notably the hunter describes many photographic incidents including how the frontispiece "The Tiger's Siesta" came to be made. One day D. encountered a a tigress atop the head of a young elephant and shot her despite the commotion. The young elephant ran off. The next day going to photograph the tigress the narrator was charged by a herd of elephants. He shot an elephant cow and they moved on to photograph the elephant "taking the tigress with us. The men who carried her threw her body into the elephants arms and it looked so strange the tigers mouth being curiously drawn up as if she were laughing that I thought I would try a picture in that position.". An excellent and fully captioned photograph album of summer trout fishing and camping in the Rangeley district at Loon Lake Maine and other places of interest. The photographer is unnamed but evidently from Boston or the north shore with some connections further south on Long Island.<br /> <br /> The album records two trips to Maine: the first to Loon Lake in 1915 and the J. Lewis York family fishing camp including several fine images of York often with a bear cub on a lead 66 photographs on 17 leaves ; and the second undated to Green Lake Mike Marr's camp at Indian Pond to Squaw Mountain Pond with Fred Lessor guide and to Moosehead Lake and the Kennebec 36 photographs on 9 leaves. <br /> <br /> Three trips to Nova Scotia in 1914 1919 and 1923 to the Kedgemakoogee Rod and Gun Club on Kedgemakoogee Lake the Shelburne River and other trout fishing excursions 139 photographs on 37 leaves. In the June 1923 trip Irving Lake Dam on the Shelburne is described as the best fishing water of the trip. A few participants are identified: E.L. Matlack O.H. Muir and Wilson Forrest and the unidentified grinning angler with a large string of trout may well be the compiler. <br /> <br /> As well as scenes from the Piping Rock Horse Show Long Island noting Miss Lansdale up in several snapshots 22 photographs on 5 leaves; and a trip to Atlantic City at the end with the Shriners parade and seaside scenes 27 photographs on 7 leaves. Baxter 1837-1890 Surgeon General of the U.S. Army personal physician to President James Garfield Baxter was not present at the assassination of the president in July 1881 gone fishing. He wrote some 99 entries and signed many others. James L. High American attorney wrote 29 entries and signed records of kills. One day such heavy quantities of logs came down that Baxter had to abandon fishing; on other days visible discharges of sawdust from upriver were a nuisance.<br /> <br /> On 15 July 1887 J.M. Oliver fishing along near the end of the Island pool was threatened with violence by the Superintendant of the Restigouche Club if he didn't get over to the other side of the water. "Notwithstanding Robinson's scaring" Oliver returned to the same pool the next day and caught a 23-lb. salmon and hooked a much larger one. Discussions with members of the club Robert Goelet owner of Toadbrook Lodge and Mr. Penfold followed "They said they were advised by counsel McAllister of Campbellton that our right extended not to the thread of the stream but the middle of the water surface" and declined to "adjust" matters; a long letter was sent to the Executive Committee of the Ristigouche Club at 120 Broadway in New York.<br /> <br /> Other anglers at the Club waters include Senators O.H. Platt of Connecticut Wade Hampton of South Carolina and George Edmunds of Vermont with wife and daughter; angling author J.A. Henshall The Book of the Black Bass Favorite Fish and Fishing etc. and his friend Dr. W.W. Dawson; John Milton Oliver later a founding member of the Izaak Walton League a conservation group whose entries have a literary flair; James Daniel Richardson Confederate soldier and Tenessee congressman 1885-1905; Samuel H. Kauffmann newspaper publisher and trustee of the Corcoran; Ripley Hitchcock E.A. Hitchcock his wife and his brother Henry Hitchcock; F.J. Baxter E.T. Allen C.B. Burnham T.B. C Brown / "Young Nimrod" / Champion Wing And / Rifle Shot of the World / as he appeared before / H.R.H. the /Prince of Wales / Prince Christian / and / various Members / of the / Royal Family.' the board acting as a custom matt for seven cabinet-sized albumen print photographs of Master Brown in uniform or in shooting kit all with gun in hand two with an accompanying gundog. <br /> <br /> It is not possible to be certain but this 'board' looks like it was used in the lobby of a venue where 'Young Nimrod' was appearing possibly doubling as the 'card' which was used to identify his 'act' as he performed on stage. In any case it is a remarkable survivor from the age of P T Barnum Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley and a reminder of a time when the borders between sport theatre and spectacle were blurred to the delight of appreciative audiences in the UK Europe and the US.<br /> <br /> In addition to showing great natural talent Charles Brown also had the advantage of being the son Thomas Brown the proprietor of the South London Shooting Ground at Nunhead. By the time he was eight 'Youing Nimrod' was already shooting to a very high standard see below for some of his most memorable scores. The Prince of Wales a keen shot was an occasional visitor to Nunhead and on the 3rd April 1882 at the Royal Aquarium Westminster Master C. Brown gave an exhibition of glass ball shooting before the Prince and his guests: this is probably the occasion referred to on the present board.<br /> <br /> A contemporary account of 'Young Nimrod is given by Basil Tozer: "Last but not least comes Master Charles Brown of Nunhead alias "Young Nimrod" a boy not yet in his teens but who may fairly be termed the juvenile champion wing-shot of the world. Young Nimrod began shooting at the early age of seven and has from the time of his first essay made wonderful progress in the art. His name is well known in connection with shooting and he is frequently a topic of conversation at pigeon shooting reunions. The guns employed are of small caliber i.e. double and single 20 24 and 28 bores thereby making his performances all the more creditable. He was greatly eulogised upon his skill by H.R.H. the Prince of Wales before whom he gave an exhibition in glass ball shooting some years ago. Annexed are some of Young Nimrod's best scores: <br /> <br /> First match at pigeons shot at Nunhead on December 18th 1882. To kill 34 blue rocks i.e.rock-doves out of 50 with a 28-bore gun at 15 yards rise. A strong wind favoured the birds rendering the task an extremely difficult one. Second match shot at Dawlish South Devon on the 28th December following. To accomplish the same feat under similar conditions. <br /> <br /> It may here be well to remind the reader that Young Nimrod was at this time but eight years of age. His next performance worthy of note took place on January 25th 1883. This was an attempt to shoot 70 pigeions out of 100 at 18 yards rise and 80 fall using his 28-bore Greener . This he achieved in splendid style. He again backed himself to reapeat the same at the Union Club Hendon on the 2nd April 1883 and actually grassed 75 of Hammond's blue rocks out of the century 61 of which were killed with the first barrel. These figures speak for themselves and the boy's unerring aim added to his cool calm demeanour whilst shooting would do credit to any veteran sportsman - not to mention a child of nine. His expertness with the rifle is equally laudable. Young Nimrod's finest performance took place at Nunhead on 25 May 1885 when he broke 1047 glass balls in one hour the first hundred being disposed of in six minutes fifty seconds. The guns employed were two 24-bores and a 20-bore. In February 1883 he undertook to shoot 420 double rises out of 600 at the Agricutural Hall on three consecutive days. This he accomplished by destroying 513 out of the 600 in double shots. In the same year he scored 88 " kills" out of 100 clay pigeons. On the 2nd March 1884 Master Brown was tasked by his father to pierce 60 wooden balls out of 100 with a .380-bore rifle standing at ten yards rise the balls were thrown up by hand in front of him.
