1920. Women in Sports Archive of three photographs documenting women's equestrian sports 1920s-40s. Three original silver gelatin press photos capturing women actively engaged in and preparing for matches-scenes that challenge the male-dominated image of early 20th-century polo. Taken in the United States and Canada these images reflect the increasing public visibility and athletic accomplishments of women showcasing their skill camaraderie and the gradual erosion of gender barriers in elite sporting environments.<br /> <br /> The earliest photograph dated September 26 1928 depicts a historic international match between Canada and the United States-the first known women's international polo game in the U.S. according to the verso text. The players from Alberta are seen poised beside their horses as they await the match's commencement in Rye New York. The image bears the credit "International Newsreel" with annotations indicating it was distributed as a news photo under the slug "Two Teams." The second photograph is captioned "Women Now Play Polo" and is dated March 20 1940. It features prominent players Joan Baker daughter of famed Australian sportsman "Snowy" Baker Mrs. "Willie" Tevis and Yvette Barette at the Riviera Country Club in Santa Monica California. Women's Physical Education Class Albumen Photo 1902
1902. Original Albumen photograph of women in physical education class. 1902. Measures 9.75 x 8 inches. Mounted to photographer's board. Image shows 26 women and girls seated in tiers and posing with various early exercise equipment including dumbbells and large leather balls marked with the year. One man poses wiwth the women in suit and tie and two older men presumably instructors pose alongside the girls one of them extending a hand to touch the shoulder of the girl beside him who looks away. The women's eyes are turned from the camera expressions fixed and unsearchable. They appear to be in a school gymnasium a ladder hung like a track on the wall behind them and racks of free weights beneath it. Women's exercise was first introduced as calisthenics a European import in the 1830s which consisted of light choreographed movements not unlike dance steps. By the late 1800s exercise had been closely linked to women's educational reform. Educational activist Catherine Beecher advocated broadly for physical education as a safeguard for female health and for forming good physical habits in the young. turn of the century Championship Women's Baseball Team Photo Postcard. "The Western Bloomer Girls-Ladies Champion Base Ball Club-Watervliet Mich." Vintage photo-illustrated postcard of the girls baseball team. No date c. 1911. Eleven uniformed girls pose for a team photograph. 3.5 x 5.5 inches. The Western Bloomer Girls were founded in 1911 by Maud Nelson a renowned pitcher in her own right. "Bloomer Girl" baseball teams of women were formed starting in the 1890s taking their name from Amelia Bloomer who designed loose fitting trousers that women wore while playing sports. Bloomer Girls teams rarely played each other but traveled across America challenging local amateur and minor league men's teams. Bloomer Girls were disciplined sportswomen and frequently won games with their solid skills and competitive spirits. Interestingly these "Boomer Girl" teams were integrated when it came to gender; while most of the players were women each roster had at least one male player. In this image two male players pose in the second row. Verso is blank with space for message and address. Light crease to bottom left corner. In very good condition. unknown books

Women baseball players. No date c. 1910s. Vintage Real photo postcard that was never sent. Two women in "Ivanhoe" baseball uniforms. 5.5 x 3.5 in. Figures identified on the verso in handwritten blue ink "Goldie & Irma Wade". The history of women playing the game of baseball dates back to the 19th century. In most cases these early women's baseball teams were considered a novelty act. Permanent teams and leagues were rare but they did exist as evidence by this photograph in which 2 serious ball players pose for the camera. In some rare cases women even played on men's teams; perhaps the case for these two who strangely pose without the rest of their teammates. Minor surface damage with a bit lossof emultion to center of image at knee level. Handling dents. In good to very good condition. unknown books

The question of . a coach for freshman hockey was introduced and Wasdine Freedline was appointed to this position. The president made a request of new business and in response to the request freshmen practice days were set for Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sophomore practice days were set for Wednesdays and Fridays. A motion was properly moved and seconded that the meeting be adjourned. Respectfully submitted Anita Brown Sec."<br/><br/>In addition to coaches and rosters for Varsity Freshman and Sophomore teams in basketball volleyball softball and soccer; the council organized various social functions. "New business. There was a discussion of the possibility of a social function before the term ends but nothing definite was decided." "After debating over several different types of social function It was decided that we have a Weiner Roast down by the river Friday Sept. 20. The Lightning Strikers. Winners of the Ladies Indoor Baseball League Trophy Nome Alaska 1914
Nome: Lomen Brothers 1914. Silver gelatin print 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Fine. Women's baseball evolved alongside men's leagues beginning in the 1860s with many teams and leagues appearing throughout the following decades often playing indoors and often unrecorded in the annals of baseball history. Women's baseball was particularly popular in Minnesota and parts of the Midwest in the early part of the twentieth century. This photograph bears evidence as to the game's migration to Alaska Territory where long winters would have been particularly conducive to an indoor league. This photograph by the Nome Alaska firm Lomen Brothers shows the champion team of the Ladies Indoor Baseball League in Nome. We find no record in contemporary newspapers or anywhere else of the league. The Nome Brothers were a well-known photographic firm who migrated from Minnesota to Alaska at the height of the Nome Gold Rush in 1903. By 1909 at the end of the gold rush the population of Nome declined substantially to 2500 from 20000 just a few years earlier. This photograph shows interesting documentation of Nome post-rush and also of the spread of women's sports through migrant populations. We find one other example in the Fred Henton collection at the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center. A fine example. Lomen Brothers unknown books

Wartime presence appears in photographs of four men in World War I-era military uniforms standing on a street corner and a uniformed sailor posed with a female companion. Additional images depict a parade crowd and two staged scenes of women in late nineteenth-century costume. Two photographs show figures physically removed.<br /> <br /> The album documents a period in which girls' participation in organized athletics particularly basketball expanded within school settings reflecting broader shifts in physical education for young women in the early twentieth century. The coexistence of athletic recreational and military imagery situates youth experience within the social environment shaped by World War I where servicemen were visible within civilian life. Beautiful specimen of the rarest issue of a sporting print commissioned by William Woodward New York banker and owner of the Bel Air Stud in Maryland who also commissioned the two most sought after books of the press 'Gallant Fox A Memoir' and 'Cherished Portraits of Thoroughbred Horses'<br/><br/>In his survey of the sporting prints of the Derrydale Press John Ordeman recorded the known prints produced for William Woodward including two portraits of 'Gallant Fox': the 1937 aquatint produced by Eugene V. Connett 3rd and an entry for a print with rider up conjecturally assigned the same date although Ordeman did not see a copy private communication. The present print is a color lithograph produced by the same process as Woodward's print of the painting of Brown Betty by T.P. Earl known in two examples. Ordeman 2005 pp. 96-7 108 not seen; Siegel p. 234 unknown books

With the finest possible association inscribed lower left "To Eugene V. Connett from William Woodward".<br/><br/>With two further examples of the privately printed thoroughbred portraits commissioned by Woodward "Omaha" and "Johnstown" after paintings by the noted artist Martin Stainforth who painted eleven equestrian portraits for Woodward. Connett's records indciated that only 10 copies of Omaha were produced Ordeman<br/><br/>Gallant Fox March 23 1927 - November 13 1954 was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who is the second winner of the American Triple Crown.<br/><br/>In a racing career which lasted from 1929 to 1930 Gallant Fox won 11 of his 17 races including the three Triple Crown races. The term "Triple Crown" was not commonly used at the time but was employed by The New York Times to describe the colt's achievements.
