A vintage gelatin silver photograph approximately 150 x 200 mm of a group of adult male tennis players
The surface of the photograph is slightly scuffed but otherwise it is in excellent condition. The original contrasting-colour double mount is a little foxed in the light-coloured panel adjacent to the image and the main board is a little worn at the corners and lightly tidemarked along the bottom edge. Undated but probably 1900 give-or-take; the photographer individuals depicted and the location are unidentified but it is probably 'somewhere in South Australia'. We'll let the subject - uncommon enough in our experience - and the image speak for themselves. unknown

Official Souvenir. 1946 Davis Cup Challenge Round. Kooyong Australia. December 26 27 and 28 1946
Sydney: Lawn Tennis Association of Australia 1946. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Sydney Lawn Tennis Association of Australia 1946. Quarto 64 pages with numerous illustrations including many period advertisements. Colour pictorial wrappers; minimal expert conservation to the spine; an excellent copy. The honour of organising this the first post-war Davis Cup competition and of making the draw fell to Australia the holder of the trophy since 1939. 'Challenges by Italy and Hungary were rejected by Australia on the grounds that for 1946 at least entries should be restricted to Allied and neutral countries'. Loosely inserted is the front cover bifolium of The Melbourne Herald for 24 December 1946; the last page is devoted to the tennis and the lengthy article by Harry Hopman accurately predicts a victory to the USA. A couple of items timeless priceless on the first page caught our eye: there was to be a 'Betting Ban at Test Match Here' 'People would not be allowed to stand up in the stands to call odds or commit any other annoyance' at the MCG and 'Last Week's Daily Net Sales' of the newspaper were 346637. The playing rules of lawn tennis as adopted by the United States National Lawn Tennis Association
New York: Peck & Snyder 1886. 22; 42 pp. Illustrated with diagrams and wood engravings. 1 vols. 16mo. Original beige printed wrappers. Small inkspot on upper cover small chips from spine otherwise an excellent copy of a rare fragile and important work. 22; 42 pp. Illustrated with diagrams and wood engravings. 1 vols. 16mo. The Origins of Modern Tennis and the USLTA. A fascinating glimpse into the early days of a a sport just getting organized in the United States The United States National Lawn Tennis Association was founded in 1881 at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York City by a group of young players who wished to standardize the rules of the game and promote the sport later in 1920 "National" was dropped and the organization became simply the USLTA. The Rules they adopted eventually became a standard reference for aficionados of the fledgling sport. All early editions of the Rules of the game are quite rare including this 1886 printing and they can be divided into two groups of titles: those using "Official Rules" and those using "Playing Rules". According to Phelps & Sabine editions of the THE OFFICIAL LAWN TENNIS RULES AS ADOPTED etc. appeared in 1881 Philadelphia Lippincott and 1882 Boston Wright & Dixon; but no copies of either of these editions is to be found in OCLC which lists however editions of 1885 and 1889 under that title. Also following Phelps & Sabine THE PLAYING RULES AS ADOPTED etc. was first published in New York in 1884 by Peck & Snyder. OCLC finds only one copy of that edition Brown University; Phelps & Sabine also refer to editions of 1886 this and 1889 -- however no copy of the 1886 edition is described. OCLC locates 3 copies: at St. Johns Yale and NY Public. The Racquet and Tennis CLub Library also holds a copy. The first section contains "The Laws of Lawn Tennis" and "The Constitution and By-Laws" of the fledgling Association with a section on "Cases and Decisions" by James Wright; the second section contains the "Rules of Umpires" a discussion of various rackets and balls Peck & Snyder manufacturers and illustrated ads for footwear lawn markers nets tennis paraphernalia etc. Finally there is a list of over 40 Clubs belonging to the Association including the "Cheynenne Lawn Tennis Club" in Wyoming with 50 members. Copies of any of these USLTA incunabula are quite rare and when found quite fragile. Phelps & Sabine p. 203; Racquet and Tennis Club Dictionary Catalogue 1970 2:414; OCLC 3 copies: Yale St. Johns and NY Public Peck & Snyder unknown

The Playing Rules of Lawn Tennis as adopted by the United States National Lawn Tennis Association.
New York: Peck & Snyder 1886 12mo. 5 6/8 x 3 6/8 inches. Illustrated throughout with diagrams engravings of tennis rackets and balls advertisements at end illustrating tennis poles nets shoes court-markers etc. Original blue printed paper wrappers a few pale stains corners chipped; preserved in a tan calf backed clamshell box. Provenance: with the ownership inscription of Harold Meeks dated 1888 on the front cover. Early edition preceded by "Playing Rules of the Popular Games of Archery and Lawn Tennis" also published by Peck & Snyder in 1878 and with its current title in 1884. In this edition the rules for Equestrian Polo and Field Croquet are included at the very end. James Dwight and his second cousin Fred Sears played "what Dwight believed to be the first game of lawn tennis in America at his uncle William Appleton's property at Nahant Massachusetts in 1874 or 1875 Dwight claimed one or the other year at different times leaving the actual year open to debate. In 1876 1877 and 1878 Dwight organized handicap round robin tournaments at Nahant. Playing with a scratch handicap he won the first two tournaments. The 1877 event marked the first appearance of future champion Dick Sears Fred's half brother. During September 1880 he and Dick Sears entered a "Championship of the United States" at Staten Island New York but they withdrew from the singles event after Dwight futilely protested that the balls were under regulation size and weight. Dwight and Sears then lost their second round doubles match. The ball controversy and a disagreement about the height of the net for doubles matches between players at tournaments in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and other cities prompted Clarence Clark from Philadelphia Eugenius Outerbridge from New York City and Dwight to convene a meeting in May 1881 that led to the creation of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association USNLTA forerunner of the U.S. Tennis Association. Illness kept Dwight out of the first U.S. singles championship at the Newport Casino in August 1881. Dick Sears won the singles and he and Dwight lost in the second round of the doubles to Clark and Fred Taylor who later became the "father of scientific management"" Frank V. Phelps for ADNB.

Johns and NY Public Peck & Snyder unknown books
