‎1938 Aérographe titré sur carton, (1938), 34 x 26.8 cm.‎

‎Maquette préparatoire pour l'hebdomadaire "moderne de la famille" Jean-Pierre présentant des annotations à la mine de plomb pour l'imprimerie. Ce projet de couverture présente le portrait en buste d'une jeune-femme insouciante, qui par une belle journée de printemps, s'apprête à jouer au tennis. Cette revue de seize pages était éditée par la S.P.I. (Société Parisienne d'Imprimerie). Elle contenait des nombreuses illustrations dans le texte, des photographies, des pages de bandes-dessinées et une couverture illustrée en couleurs. Ce journal d'avant-guerre fut édité du 17 février 1938 au 20 juin 1940. 115 numéros parurent. Quelques salissures sur l'oeuvre.‎

‎A vintage gelatin silver photograph approximately 150 x 200 mm of a group of adult male tennis players‎

‎The surface of the photograph is slightly scuffed but otherwise it is in excellent condition. The original contrasting-colour double mount is a little foxed in the light-coloured panel adjacent to the image and the main board is a little worn at the corners and lightly tidemarked along the bottom edge. Undated but probably 1900 give-or-take; the photographer individuals depicted and the location are unidentified but it is probably 'somewhere in South Australia'. We'll let the subject - uncommon enough in our experience - and the image speak for themselves. unknown‎

A male foursome in shirtsleeves plays this outdoor racquet game a precursor of tennis while spectators look on. Tennis in France evolved from a game played with the bare hand to one where the hand was protected. This gave way at an early date to the hand-held strung racquet and the game divided into a version played indoor "jeu de courte paume" short tennis which developed into court tennis and one played outdoors "jeu de longue paume" long tennis pictured in this plate. Quarto 64 pages with numerous illustrations including many period advertisements. Colour pictorial wrappers; minimal expert conservation to the spine; an excellent copy. The honour of organising this the first post-war Davis Cup competition and of making the draw fell to Australia the holder of the trophy since 1939. 'Challenges by Italy and Hungary were rejected by Australia on the grounds that for 1946 at least entries should be restricted to Allied and neutral countries'. Loosely inserted is the front cover bifolium of The Melbourne Herald for 24 December 1946; the last page is devoted to the tennis and the lengthy article by Harry Hopman accurately predicts a victory to the USA. A couple of items timeless priceless on the first page caught our eye: there was to be a 'Betting Ban at Test Match Here' 'People would not be allowed to stand up in the stands to call odds or commit any other annoyance' at the MCG and 'Last Week's Daily Net Sales' of the newspaper were 346637. One Herbert Fuller Chaffee born in 1865 achieved great success managing a Bonanza farm on North Dakota only to perish with the sinking of the Titanic. The young man in the foreground of this photo staring directly into the lens bears a close resemblance to a known image of Chaffee. This photo was possibly taken when Chaffee attended Oberlin College in the late 1880's. unknown books‎

A fascinating glimpse into the early days of a a sport just getting organized in the United States The United States National Lawn Tennis Association was founded in 1881 at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York City by a group of young players who wished to standardize the rules of the game and promote the sport later in 1920 "National" was dropped and the organization became simply the USLTA. The Rules they adopted eventually became a standard reference for aficionados of the fledgling sport. All early editions of the Rules of the game are quite rare including this 1886 printing and they can be divided into two groups of titles: those using "Official Rules" and those using "Playing Rules". According to Phelps & Sabine editions of the THE OFFICIAL LAWN TENNIS RULES AS ADOPTED etc. appeared in 1881 Philadelphia Lippincott and 1882 Boston Wright & Dixon; but no copies of either of these editions is to be found in OCLC which lists however editions of 1885 and 1889 under that title. Also following Phelps & Sabine THE PLAYING RULES AS ADOPTED etc. was first published in New York in 1884 by Peck & Snyder. OCLC finds only one copy of that edition Brown University; Phelps & Sabine also refer to editions of 1886 this and 1889 -- however no copy of the 1886 edition is described. OCLC locates 3 copies: at St. Johns Yale and NY Public. The Racquet and Tennis CLub Library also holds a copy. The first section contains "The Laws of Lawn Tennis" and "The Constitution and By-Laws" of the fledgling Association with a section on "Cases and Decisions" by James Wright; the second section contains the "Rules of Umpires" a discussion of various rackets and balls Peck & Snyder manufacturers and illustrated ads for footwear lawn markers nets tennis paraphernalia etc. Finally there is a list of over 40 Clubs belonging to the Association including the "Cheynenne Lawn Tennis Club" in Wyoming with 50 members.
