On letterhead of 'Mr. John Hare's Autumn Provincial Tour 1900' Birmingham Liverpool Manchester. 15 September 1900. 2pp 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. The letter casts an interesting sidelight on the practicalities of the late-Victorian theatre. He begins by explaining that he is sending back a wig he made for him which was 'an admirable one in every way' and asking that he make him 'one like it for America & to bestow your best skill on it as it is of great importance to me'. He instructs him to 'make the wig a shade darker something of the color it is dyed behind & put a little natural white hair on the temples each side'. He urges him to be 'very careful that the waive is a natural one & not overdone it looks bad from the front see Mr in Julius Caesar'. He ends with the assumption that Clarkson will 'do your best for me'. James Morton in his 'Gangland Soho' 2012 alleges that Clarkson who has a blue plaque to his name at 41-43 Wardour Street was not only a repeated insurance fraudster but a notorious homosexual blackmailer after whom the public lavatory in Dansey Place was named 'Clarkson's Cottage'. Sending his 'mosts profound sympathy in the danger which threatens Chelsea'. He will sign 'the paper . with the greatest of pleasure' although he anticipates 'very little good as a possible result'. Suggests a time at which the paper can be sent to him. He doubts whether it will be 'any consolation' but 'the London County Council are at this moment allowing the most beautiful suburb in London namely Frognal to be ruined by the erection of hideous barracks that they call flats. Their architect says that he can do nothing in the matter.' Besant's signature has a diagonal line through it apparently in the same ink and it is not clear whether this is a stylistic flourish or a cancellation by Besant possibly on the letter being returned to him with the papers referred to in the letter. Published 3 years after the death of British writer John Sterling 1806-1844 at age 38 these two volumes contain much of his output as well as a memoir of his life by Charles Hare. Included are most of his fantasy tales among which are the novella The Onyx Ring five of the fantasy tales that were imbedded in the novel Arthur Coningsby and the longer short story "A Chronicle of England" which Murray Ewing describes as "a delightful fairy-haunted picture of England in the days before it received its first human inhabitants." John Sterling had long languished in obscurity but today he is hailed by many as an important progenitor of fantastical literature. In the Encyclopedia of Fantasy John Clute and John Grant argue that Sterling has to be considered "the most significant UK pioneer of fantasy." In The Dedalus Book of British Fantasy: The 19th Century Brian Stableford states: Sterling would surely have become one of the leading writers of his day had he not died so young and he might well have become the most important nineteenth century fantasy writer; his prose fantasies are more various and more adventurous than any other contemporary work. Very good condition: both volumes are clean and tight with some rubbing along edges of covers and spine. A fine copy in the illustrated dust jacket that is slightly toned lacking a few tiny chips at the spine crown and is scarred on the bottom of the rear panel from the removal of a 1 x 1 inch price label. Swank was born in 1890 in Pennsylvania; after a number of different occupations and serving in the army he turned to photography around 1930. He exhibited in various salons around the U.S. in group exhibitions in major museums exhibed at the Julien Levy Gallery in 1932 and was published in several photographic journals. Hare places the Whig Medley in dialogue with the Tory Examiner whose editor for much of 1711 was Jonathan Swift.<br/>Mrs. Manley who worked for Swift at this time when he was the chief political writer for the Earl of Oxford's ministry replies here with a pamphlet satirizing Marlborough and protesting Hare's unfair ventriloquizing for Swift. <br/>Bound with: MANLEY Delarivier.
