Lacks portrait frontispiece which is rare and not uncommon. Overall still an excellent copy of a rare book. 4to. A4 a-b4 B-2Z4 Woodcut astrological diagrams. John Partridge 1643-1715 influential English astrologer and producer of almanacs. Apprentice to a shoemaker he acquired enough books to teach himself Greek Latin and Hebrew. He may have studied with atrologer John Gadbury and seems to have given up shoes when his first publication was issued about 1678. His first major work Mikropanasurm was published the next year. In 1680 he started issuing an almanac entitled Merlinus Liberatus. Partridge came to prefer the Placidian house system aka Ptolemaic Method a system that can be described as time-proportional house sytem of movement which is in contrast to the space-based systems that are built on atrsonomical great circles rather than on time curves a choice evident in his final major works including Opus Reformation 1693 and the Defectio Geniturarum 1697 both highly technical analyses of primary directions in sample horoscopes. By 1700 he was the most prominent astrologer in Britain. His almanac was so popular other people began to publish almanacs in his name. “Partridge was the butt of one of Swift’s Jonathan most delightful satires and mystifications under the pseudo of Bickerstaff prophesying his death and afterwards announcing it with the addition of a number of imaginary details so as to render the description more complete. This last pamphlet ‘The Accomplishment of Mr. Bickerstaffs Predictions being an account of the death of Mr. Patrridge killed the latter so effectually that even the repeated counter-pamphlets of the bewildered victim declaring himself to still be alive could not convince the world of that fact†-quote from Sutheran’s Price Catalogue 1905. .Often bound with a second title “Flagitiosus Mercurius flagellatus†at the end our copy does not include this work but is complete in itself and not uncommon to be bound alone.
