Higinbotham "Patriarch of Pong" Signed Type Script Article About His Landmark non-violence Computer Game
Inventor of the landmark computer game Pong. Type Script Signed by Higinbotham 3 page -1990 "Invention and Technology Magazine" article by Frederic D. Schwartz about Higinbotham's role in the origin of computer games. <br/><br/>Schwartz's article begins "Remember Pong In 1972 it became the first succesful video-arcade game.In reality though it was invented in 1958 in a laboratory in then-rural Upton New York by a man named William Higinbotham." According to this article Higinbotham was integral to the birth of successful modern video games as the article explains that "Higinbotham was in charge of instrumentation design at Brookhaven National Research Laboratory BNL a government supported nuclear-research facility.To assure people that they were in no danger and that their crops would not mutate the laboratory ran tours to show how useful important and safe its research was." Higinbotham's contribution based on his desire " to liven things up" was computer based "tennis game with the court displayed on an oscilloscope's screen. For a man who had helped develop the first radar systems and designed timing devices for the Manhattan Project's atomic bomb it was a simple matter to plan the necessary circuitry and within a couple of days the game was finished." So Pong was born. As the article explains however Higinbotham was in a difficult position regarding the game's ownership. As a government employee he could not register a patent in his own name as "Uncle Sam would have owned it." <br/><br/>Higinbotham who had "witnessed the first test detonation at Los Alamos" and was "determined to reduce the awesome threat that nuclear weapons posed to the world" had attempted to create a game of non-violence. He lobbies and speaks against violent games and nuclear weapons and as the article concludes "It's nice to be the patriarch of Pong. But if current trends continue and his scientific efforts end up leading to a peaceful world Willy Higinbotham will have accomplished something much greater." The typescript is signed on page 3 by Higinbotham in his hand: "Best Wishes William A. Higinbotham Feb.8 1991." An interesting association piece which reveals how work on global issues such as nuclear energy intersected with the invention of peaceful computer technologies designed for diversion and entertainment. The game board with an impressive pop-up circus tent featuring Dumbo in the center preparing for his famed “burning building leap†and decorated with colorful characters from the movie. Included game pieces featuring colourful characters and an instruction sheet in Danish. 19 by 19 inches fold-up cardboard game board and a colorful pictorially decorated paper-board box containing the Dumbo playing pieces a die and an instruction sheet. One sheet of playing instructions in Danish. The pop up board is in lovely condition some wear to the small box of playing pieces. A WELL-PRESERVED DISNEY GAME and one featuring one of the studio’s most beloved animal characters. Dumbo is of course the baby elephant who could fly. Although the rules are in Danish the game is fairly simple to figure out and appears to be essentially complete. Buffalo NY: February 15 1927. 1927. Good. - Signed "Prince William of Sweden" on a slip of paper which has been mounted on a gray autograph album page 5-3/4 inches high by 4-1/4 inches wide together with a portrait clipped from a newspaper. A cut-out coat of arms has been mounted to the right of the photo with a note by the previous owner penned below it. There is some light staining to the portrait and the cut signature probably from the glue used in the mounting. Good. <p>Prince William of Sweden was an internationally known big game hunter a writer of books on travel and exploration novels and plays a poet and a contributor to American magazines. In 1927 he toured America lecturing about his African adventures. His autograph was evidently obtained on this tour as indicated by the note penned on the album page: "Feb. 151927 at Buffalo Consistory. "Hunting big game in Pygmy Land." N.Y. 1962. Entire issue in wrappers. � First publication of Rado's highly influential paper in which he describes the Busy Beaver Game. The present paper - one of the most important results within theoretical computer science - deals with the existence of non computable functions. <br><br>"The busy beaver game originally posed by Rado in 1962 is a problem in which the challenge is to construct a Touring machine on a given number of states and symbols that prints a maximal number of ones or alternatively executes a maximal number left/right shifts and subsequently halts. Although the problem is simple to state and its solutions are finite and well-defined determination of actual values are readily shown to be non-computable."
