First edition of this important study of the plague in Egypt and the quarantine laws to prevent its spread; the "principal work" (Hirsch) of the German physician J. F. Reinhold Grohmann (1784-1867). Educated in Leipzig and Vienna, Grohmann was travelling to Constantinople when the Russo-Turkish War of 1806 stopped short his journey in Bucharest. He remained there and witnessed a particularly severe plague epidemic in 1813. He spent much of his subsequent career in the East before settling in Vienna; from 1831 to 1833 he was a member of a committee convened to formulate new standards for plague epidemics. In his medical work he described the plague as a nervous fever affecting the brain, little influenced by the climate. His son Paul Grohmann would go on to be one of Austria's most famous mountaineers of his age. - Very well preserved in a splendid Austrian master binding. It shows boundaries and occupied territories as they were after World War I, physical features, principal cities, road networks, communication lines, and maritime navigation distance. The inset map at the top right shows the Aden Protectorate and part of South-Western Yemen (scale 1:1,825,000). - Rare. Library Hub locates just one copy, at the University of Manchester. First edition of this important polemical work by Guadagnoli (1596-1656), the first Italian to teach Arabic and Syriac at La Sapienza and one of the correctors for the enormous Arabic Bible which the Propaganda Fide press began work on in 1632. The present piece of theological disputation was "launched against the Safavid scholar Ahmad b. Zayn al-'Abidin. This fascinating dispute was provoked in the first instance by the anti-Muslim tract penned by the Navarrese Jesuit Jerónimo Javier [...] That work found its way to Safavid Persia, where Ahmad b. Zayn al-'Abidin wrote a polemic response that refuted Christianity; he sent it to Rome in hopes that his arguments would convince the Pope. Scholars in Rome, among them Guadagnoli, studied the Safavid text and prepared their own refutation of it, which was published in the Roman presses of the Congregation [...] The work enjoyed wide circulation and reached the Muslim East; we known that it was wielded as a tool of religious propaganda at the court of the Great Mughal, and that years later, in the eighteenth century, an occasional Christian missionary would study it as a valuable resource for religious disputation with Muslims [...] The 'Apologia' contains, for example, quotations from the Qur'an that are written in Arabic and always accompanied by Guadagnoli's own Latin translation [...] The 1631 [first] edition is intensely anti-Islamic and full of ad hominem attacks on the Prophet, while curiously the 1637 version shows an evolution toward a somewhat greater respect for the religion" (García/Rodríguez). - Binding a little loosened. Contemporary sheepskin parchment, sewn on 5 cords (3 secured to the boards, 2 cut flush with the bookblock), headbands worked in pink and white, edges sprinkled pink and blue, manuscript spine title in 2nd of 6 compartments. First and only edition of Guadagnoli's Latin grammar of the Arabic language, in a luxurious folio format. In 1632 the Propaganda Fide had begun work on an Arabic Bible that was not to be completed until 1671. Extracts from the Arabic historical manuscript "no. 689" by Joseph de Guignes, the famous French sinologist and orientalist, with notes on the history of Egypt during the years 1517-1522 and the Ottoman conquest by Sultan Selim. Guignes's notes start at f. 111 and end at f. 334 of the Arabic manuscript, which is a part of a historical work on Egypt entitled "Bada'I al-Zuhur fi Waqa'I al-Duhur". The "Bada" was written by the famous chronicler of the late Mamluk and early Ottoman period in Egypt, Muhammad Ibn Iyas (1448-after November 1522) and today is kept in the manuscript section of the French Royal library (no. 1825, ancien fonds no. 689). Guignes's extract contains numerous of transcripts in Arabic script. - Today, Joseph de Guignes is best known for his "Histoire générale des Huns, des Turcs, des Mogols, et des autres Tartares occidentaux" (Paris, 1756-1758), for his unsuccessful attempts to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics (before the 1799 discovery of the Rosetta Stone and Champollion's breakthrough), and for his theory that China was an outpost of Ancient Egypt.

The Saudi approach is unique Unrecorded institutionally and commercially this attractive set of albums celebrates Lockheed's role in augmenting Saudi Arabia's air traffic control systems both commercial and military over the period 1972-82. They comprise a total of 80 leaves covering summaries of developments "information flow" diagrams for Kaia Riyadh International Dhahran and Jeddah airports colour maps charts and photographs of facilities operatives and aircraft. Writing in Arabian Studies in 1976 aviation expert Elda I. Stifani notes: "By virtue of its geographical position and the strategic economic and political interests of both local and worldwide powers the Middle East plays a major role in civil aviation operations
The Saudi approach is unique. No other country in the Arabian Peninsula has an equally determined and precise policy of national aviation development" Arabian Studies III p. 36. Interestingly he also notes that "Bahrain handles air traffic for all the UAA United Arabian Airlines Qatar part of Oman of Kuwait and of Saudi Arabia Dhahran". In March 1974 the Saudi airline Saudia ordered two of Lockheed's new TriStar airliners specially fitted with increased wing fuel tankage. By 1978 Saudia had increased its fleet of TriStars to thirteen. Provenance: presented to Clifford G. Fay of Lockheed Saudi Arabia 1980-82 with his name and dates of service on the front covers. Loosely inserted is a typed letter from Lockheed to Fay presenting the volumes and mentioning that they have been supplied by Joe Akers who was a Lockheed veteran with 28-years' experience at the company retiring as chairman in 1988 26 June 1983 Jeddah letterhead in English and Arabic. 2 vols landscape quarto 235 x 320 mm. With 80 sheets presented recto and verso in clear plastic pockets. Original ring binders fan-patterned cloth spines brown morocco-grain faux leather sides upper covers and front flaps with gilt arms of Saudi Arabia. Cloth sides just a little rubbed tear to first pocket in vol. II not affecting image minor creasing to presentation letter. An excellent set. Many colour graphics and bar charts illustrate the financial allocations made to different ministries agricultural figures and even the number of students enrolled in vocational training centres. Small quarto. Original green leatherette over boards front cover and spine lettered in gilt. With 2 loose leaves handwritten in Arabic. The first part comprises "Arab Unity: A General Outlook" a speech delivered by Prince Saud al-Faisal Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is concerned with the difference between the "failed" concepts of Arab unity and Arab nationalism and their relationship with Islamic doctrines. The second part is devoted to a research paper by the GCC Secretary General concerning the role of the GCC in the achievement of Arab unity. It analyzes regional changes in the decade 1971-1981 and the "Arab degeneration and decline and the downfall of the unity of Arab security" before the establishment of the GCC. Octavo 240 x 165 mm. Rare surviving item of corporate ephemera from the brief period when the potential for the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Explosives were actively considered and investigated. This document is undated but has content indicating that it was produced no earlier than 1962. Because it is a product of Gulf General Atomic it was produced between 1967 and 1973 based on when this name was officially used. Based on context this document is probably from the earlier part of this period. This is a marketing brochure for Gulf General Atomic's field services and highlights some of its expertise developed in support of nuclear-effects computer code development high-explosive experimental verification and analytical and experimental participation in underground nuclear explosive testing. Also highlighted is their experience with chemical explosives. General Atomics is an American energy and defense corporation headquartered in San Diego California specializing in research and technology development. This includes physics research in support of nuclear fission and nuclear fusion energy. The company also provides research and manufacturing services for remotely operated surveillance aircraft including the Predator drones airborne sensors and advanced electric electronic wireless and laser technologies. General Atomic GA was founded on July 18 1955 in San Diego California by Frederic de Hoffmann with assistance from notable physicists Edward Teller and Freeman Dyson. Originally the company was part of the General Atomic division of General Dynamics "for harnessing the power of nuclear technologies for the benefit of mankind".<br/> In 1956 San Diego voters approved the transfer of land to GA for permanent facilities in Torrey Pines and the John Jay Hopkins Laboratory for Pure and Applied Science was formally dedicated there on June 25 1959. The Torrey Pines facility continues to serve as the company's headquarters. General Atomic's initial projects were the TRIGA nuclear research reactor which was designed so that it was guaranteed to be safe by the laws of nature and Project Orion. GA helped develop and run the San Diego Supercomputer Center.<br/> <br/> A brief history of the company:<br/> <br/> 1967: Sold to Gulf Oil and renamed Gulf General Atomic.<br/> 1973: Renamed "General Atomic Company" when Royal Dutch Shell Group's Scallop Nuclear Inc. became a 50-50 partner.<br/> 1979: Harold Agnew appointed president and CEO<br/> 1982: Renamed "GA Technologies Inc" when Gulf bought out its partner. Original engraving titled "Ile Dormus ou de Jerun" The Strait of Hormuz. Published in 1747. Engraving is from "Histoire generale des voyages." Illustrated by Bellin. On top is the "Cote de Perse." Engraving depicts "Fortresse" "Ile de Kishom ou Quixema" "Entre des Vaisseaux" "Porte de derriere" "Parade Alkoran" "St. Lucia" "Lardimira" with illustrations of ships and fortress. Arab ships on the left and European ships with large masts and multiple sails on the right. Five Arab ships in the foreground. In the foreground representing the Arabian peninsula. The Portuguese explorer Afonso de Albuquerque captured the island in 1507 and it became a part of the Portuguese Empire. The Portuguese constructed a fortress on the island the Fort of Our Lady of the Conception which is represented in this etching. But in 1622 the island was captured from the Portuguese by a combined Anglo-Persian force. The island then became part of Persia Iran and later part of Oman. Paper has been folded three times. Overall page size is 13.5" x 9.5." Image size is 7.5" x 9.75." Overall in very good condition. unknown books

Chicago: H. M. Gousha 1933. 23 1/4 x 17 1/2 inches. Very good condition. This is a highly decorative Depression Era map of the United States. The design on the front cover is a modest view of getting gas at the pump. A uniformed attendant puts the gas in the back of the sedan. The verso of the map is filled with panels of attractive people and the friendly servers of Gulf gasoline clearly marked on the pumps. There is a lubrication chart that lists the different automobile makes in 1933. What an expanded selection with names like Auburn Cadillac Cord Durant Hupmobile Isotta-Fraschini Locomobile Pierce-Arrow Stutz and Willys among many others. There ia also a transcontinental mileage chart. This is a fun piece highlights by a superb graphic presentation of the map of the United States. H. M. Gousha unknown
