‎Arabiae linguae tyrocinium. Id est, [...] grammatica arabica. Cum varia praxios materia, cuius elenchum versa dabit pagella. Leiden, Jean Maire, 1656.‎

‎4to. (12), 282 pp. Title printed in red and black with large engraving. - (Bound with) II: Sennert, Andreas. Arabismus, h. e. praecepta arabicae linguae [...]. Wittenberg, Fincelius, 1666. (8), 166 pp. - (Bound with) III: The same. [Mi'a Matal]. Centuria proverbiorum arabicorum. Ibid., 1658. (24) pp. Contemporary vellum with ms. title to spine. I: Third, most encompassing edition of the first scientific Arabic grammar written by a European scholar. Erpenius had published his "Grammatica Arabica" in 1613, having completed it four years earlier while staying in Paris with Casaubon. A second edition appeared in 1636 - edited by Anton Deusing, a pupil of Golius - adding the fables of Lokman and Arabic proverbs earlier edited by Erpenius. The present edition was edited by Golius himself, Erpenius's successor to the chair of Arabic. Repeating Deusing's 1636 edition, it now adds a modest Arabic chresthomathy previously edited by Golius's pupil Fabricius. This copy includes the cancel-slip for two lines of text and a catchword on f. *2v. Interleaved between pp. 200 and 201 with five ms. pages by a Swedish scholar (c. 1915). - II: Second edition of Sennert's Arabic grammar, followed by a concise Arabic dictionary. - III: Only edition of this rare collection of Arabic proverbs with their Latin translations, also prepared by the German scholar Sennert (1606-89), himself a pupil of Golius and in 1640 Jakob Weller's successor as professor of oriental languages in Wittenberg. - Somewhat browned due to paper, but well-preserved altogether. Several old ownerships on flyleaf, including a note of acquisition dated Wittenberg, 1619, and the ownership of Ernst Friedrich Tobias (dated Feb. 1725). I: Smitskamp, BO 72. Schnurrer 81. Juynboll 148f. - II: Schnurrer 82 (note). VD 17, 12:130977S. OCLC 836692815. - III: VD 17, 3:313989Z. OCLC 633598572.‎

‎Grammatica arabica cum fabulis Lokmani etc. Accedunt excerpta anthologiae veterum arabiae poetoetarum quae inscribitur Hamasa Abi Temmam et notis illustrata ab Alberto Schultens praefatio. Editio secunda. Leiden, apud Samuel et Joannes Luchtmans, 1767.‎

‎Small 4to. (14), CXXXII, 603, (69) pp. With engraved vignette and the engraved coat of arms of Wilhelm Count Bentink. Contemporary half calf with giltstamped spine label. Erpenius's famous grammar, a landmark in Arabic studies until the early 19th century. This edition is a line-for-line reprint of the 1748 edition (which in turn repeated the one edited by Golius in 1656), with only the indexes expanded. It also contains a collection of pre-Islamic folk songs, the "Hamasah" of Abu Tammam, added by the editor Schultens, as well as an extensive preface discussing the relationship between Hebrew and Arabic. Erpenius (1584-1624), professor of oriental languages at Leiden, first published his "Grammatica Arabica" in 1613, having completed it four years earlier while staying in Paris with Casaubon. He is regarded as "one of the men whom the study of oriental languages owes its resurrection [...] He set up his own printing shop with Hebrew, Arabic, Syrian, Ethiopian, and Turkish type" (cf. ADB). Until well into the 19th century his works, published in numerous editions, remained the foundation of Arabic language teaching in the west. The editor of this edition, Albert Schultens (1686-1750), also served as professor of Oriental Languages at Leiden (1732-1750). During his lifetime he was the principal teacher of Arabic in Europe, and followed Erpenius's tradition in restoring the reputation of Arabic studies, vindicating the importance of the comparative study of the Semitic languages against those who regarded Hebrew as a sacred language beyond the realm of comparative philology. - Spine slightly rubbed, minor foxing to title page, otherwise in very good condition. Schnurrer 106. Smitskamp, BO 75. Breugelmans, Fac et spera (2003) 1656:1. F. De Nave, Philologia Arabica (1986) 72.‎

‎Rudimenta linguae Arabicae. Accedunt eiusdem praxis grammatica; & consilium de studio Arabico feliciter instituendo. Leiden, ex typographia auctoris, 1620.‎

‎8vo. (16), 184, (56) pp. With woodcut printer's device on t. p. Modern half vellum with marbled covers. Rare first edition. "The work opens with the well known 'Consilium de studio arabico feliciter instituendo' here published for the first time. At the end is given a 'Catalogus librorum arabicorum', compiled by Erpenius and Coddaeus, and listing most of the work concerned with Arabic published so far. It is one of the sources for the alleged Koran printed in Venice ca. 1520" (Smitskamp). Remarkably, the author printed his introduction in the Arabic style, from right to left. Erpenius (1584-1624), professor of oriental languages at Leiden, "is one of the men whom the study of oriental languages owes its resurrection [...] He set up his own printing shop with Hebrew, Arabic, Syrian, Ethiopian, and Turkish type" (cf. ADB). Until well into the 19th century his works, published in numerous editions, remained the foundation of Arabic language teaching in the west. - A few underlinings and marginalia in Latin and Arabic. Some waterstaining. From the library of the Danzig Lutheran Nathanael Dilger (1604-79) with his marginalia and autograph note of acquisition, dated November 1625, on title page. Graesse II, 499. Hoefer XVI, 309. Schnurrer 55. Smitskamp 88. ADB VI, 329 ("1628" in error). Cf. Ebert 6914. Gay 3400 (later ed.). Brunet 1050 (later ed.).‎

‎Large 8vo. (16), 184, (48) pp. Title printed in red and black with woodcut vignette in red and black. Contemp. limp vellum. "A scholar’s issue, with 5 prefatory leaves" (Smitskamp): the first of three versions distinguished by Smitskamp of the third edition of the "Rudimenta". As the earlier editions (first: 1620; second, posthumously: 1628), this is printed in the beautiful Arabic type of Savary de Brèves. Erpenius (1584-1624), professor of oriental languages at Leiden, "is one of the men whom the study of oriental languages owes its resurrection [...] He set up his own printing shop with Hebrew, Arabic, Syrian, Ethiopian, and Turkish type" (cf. Re-issue of the 1733 4th edition (first published in 1620). "An important addition is Schultens' 'Clavis dialectorum', in which he discusses the lexicological relation between Hebrew and Arabic. Another new feature is the anthology of proverbs entitled 'Al-Nawabig' [...] The indexes are this time predominant, for Arabic alone 142 pages" (Smitskamp). ‎De hippische sport en het korps rijdende artillerie 1793-1908 … 1e gedeelte [valkerij]. 2e gedeelte [hippische sport]. Arnhem, Coers & Roest and G.J. Thieme, [1913].‎

‎2 volumes. Large 4to (37.5 x 31 cm). With ca. 80 lithographed plates and numerous illustrations and decorations in text, many beautifully coloured by hand and some highlighted with silver and/or gold. [16], 172, [18], [2 blank]; [14], 221, [1 blank], [17], [1 blank] pp. Original publisher's gold-blocked blue cloth, with a coloured hooded hawk on front boards, upper edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. Very rare, limited first and only edition of an exquisitely produced work on falconry and equestrian sports, a showpiece of Dutch art nouveau book illustration. The first volume, on falconry, contains reproductions of the plates from Schlegel and Wulvenhorst's "Traité de fauconnerie" (1844-53), "the finest work on falconry which has ever been produced" (Harting), and opens with a section devoted to the Dutch Prince Alexander van Oranje-Nassau (1818-48), president of the Royal Hawking Club, and ends with a list of terms together with their translation into English, French and German. The second volume treats the equestrian sports in the Netherlands, England, France, Germany and Belgium, with illustrations of races and hunts. Much of the information derived from previously unpublished sources concerning the Dutch Royal family and their horse- and falconry related activities. - It is a separately published follow-up to the ten volume set Het historisch museum van het Korps Rijdende Artillerie (1898-1904), that was published to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Dutch Horse Artillery Corps (The Yellow Riders). The complete series ranks "among the most beautiful military publications in the world" (Sloos). - The book was financed and privately published in a limited number by Nicolaas Jan Adriaan Pieter Helenus van Es (1847-1921), Captain of the Dutch Horse Artillery Corps and amateur painter. He was assisted artistically by Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht (1858-1933), Hendrik Maarten Krabbé (1868-1931), Willem Constantijn Staring (1847-1916). The first was famed for his military art. - With a presentation inscription from the author to Colonel Harhoff dated 1913, in each volume, and with library stamps of the Royal Garrison Library Copenhagen ("Det Kgl. Garnisons Bibliothek i Kiøbenhavn" and "Artillerie bibliothek"). Bindings only slightly scuffed at the foot of the spine, otherwise in very good condition. NCC (4 copies). Scarce records on the Hateiba gas field development project of Esso Standard Libya. The archive includes several schemes and diagrams as well as a brief description of the production facilities, an organization chart, and a capital cost summary - the total cost of the project amounting to $46,470. Of particular interest are the photographs of the low temperature separation gas plant installed at Hateiba, depicting l.t.s. units and air fin coolers, water tanks, the safety shutdown station and the knock-out drum, as well as the maintenance building and the central control panel operated by two employees. - In excellent condition. ‎Estève, Martin-Roch-Xavier.‎

‎Règlement du payeur général [de l'armée d'Orient] sur les fabriques d'eau-de-vie. Cairo, Imprimerie nationale, [ca. 1800].‎

‎Folio (325 x 465 mm). Broadsheet. Printed in French and Arabic in two columns. Only known copy of this broadside intended for wall-mounting, printed by the first printing press in the Arab world. Issued by the paymaster of Napoleon's Armée de l'Orient, Martin-Roch-Xavier Estève (1772-1852), it is a proclaimation of six articles regulating the production of liquor, mosty from dates, in Cairo, Giza, and Boulaq (now a district of Cairo), including tariffs on the raw materials and final product, a maximum price, and corresponding fines. Distilleries needed to be registered and marked in capital letters as "Fabrique d'eau de vie" within a fixed period following the proclamation. Inspectors were supposed to make "frequent inspections", checking, among other things, that the produced liquor had at least 18 per cent by volume and that it be "of good quality and without any kind of adulteration detrimental to health". The raw materials enumerated in the proclamation include five qualities of fresh dates, dried dates, figs, and raisins. - Small waterstain in the lower edge, traces of folds, otherwise well preserved. No copy in the Bibliotheque nationale de France, not recorded in OCLC. The only known documentation for this highly interesting broadside is the sales catalogue for the library of the famous orientalist Antoine Isaac Silvestre de Sacy. Bibliothèque de M. le baron Silvestre de Sacy, Vol. III, Paris, 1847, p. 461, no. 50. Cf. D. Glass/G. Roper, The Printing of Arabic Books in the Arab World, in: Middle Eastern Languages and the Print Revolution (Gutenberg Museum Mainz 2002), p. 177-225, at 182.‎

‎Engraved broadside with letterpress title and text. Ca. 430 x 550 mm. Rare, unrecorded broadside showing the family tree of the reigning sultan of Turkey Amurath III (1548-95) and his eleven ancestors, thus covering 12 generations beginning with sultan Osman I (1259-1326). Two shields display the Sultan’s coat of arms and attributes (turban, sword, bow and arrows, rife and tools). Each sultan has his own engraved portrait; letterpress title above and two columns of letterpress text at the sides: information about the sultans to the left, and information about their brothers (29 in all) at the right. The Austrian scholar Michael Eyzinger (Baron Aitzing, ca. 1530-98) wrote several pamphlets on contemporary historical events, parts of which were published by Gottfried van Kempen (cf. Göllner 1594). He is considered a pioneer of newspaper journalism, as well as of genealogy. - Restored copy; formerly mounted with vague gluestains on verso, skilfully remargined and 2 large repaired horizontal tears (slight loss of image and text).‎

‎Fabricius, Christoph Carl (auct.) / Nagel, Johann Andreas Michael (praes.).‎

‎Specimen academicum de studio philosophiae Graecae inter Arabes. Altdorf, Johann Georg Meyer, 1745.‎

‎4to. 36 pp. Contemporary papered spine. First edition of this rare and early dissertation on the reception of Greek philosophy in the Arab world. Composed as an "academic specimen" by the young Nuremberg-born classicist Christopher Fabricius under the direction of the Altdorf professor Johann Nagel (1710-88), one of Germany's foremost oriental scholars of his age, this treatise is one of the first to investigate the crucial transmission process of ancient Greek "philosophia" into the Aristotelian and Neo-Platonically infused "falsafa" of mediaeval Islamic culture. The author points out that it was through Muslim travellers to India and China that even the cultures of the farther East were introduced to Western philosophy. - The study's principal Arabic sources are Abu al-Faraj and Jirjis ibn al-'Amid Makin. As the printer of Altdorf University, Meyer, lacked Arabic type, the quotations are set in Hebrew. Reprinted in 1753 in C. E. von Windheim's "Fragmenta Historiae Philosophicae". - A waterstain to the title-page, otherwise in good condition. Meusel X, 5.‎

‎Faik Bey, Mühendis.‎

‎Seyâhatnâme-i Bahr-i Muhit. Istanbul, Mekteb-i Bahriye-i Sâhâne Matbaasi, [1868 CE =] 1285 H.‎

‎8vo. (1), 81, (1) pp. Ottoman Turkish in Arabic type. Modern blindstamped full calf with the Turkish crescent and star to upper cover, and giltstamped spine. Marbled endpapers. First and only early edition. - An exceedingly rare travelogue of the first ever voyage of the Ottoman navy to the American continent, albeit accidental. Thrown off their course to Basra by a storm on the Atlantic near Cape Verde, the two Ottoman warships Bursa and Izmir were dragged in the opposite direction, to Rio de Janeiro. This lively account by the Turkish engineer and naval officer Faik Bey describes all the stages of the corvettes' 13-month journey, their voyage from Istanbul across the Mediterranean Sea to Cadiz, on to the Canary Islands and the Cape Verde Islands, and the fierce storm that brought them to the shores of Brazil, where they laid anchor at the port of Rio de Janeiro before setting sail again two months later. They visited many ports and countries including the Cape of Good Hope, Mauritius, Muscat, Bombay, and Iran, before finally reaching Basra in November 1866. Faik Bey gives a personal account of what must have been an exciting but strenuous journey, while also reflecting on the economic conditions in the Ottoman state and the Islamic world at the time. - Extremely rare; we were not able to trace a single library copy. A second edition was not published until 138 years after the first, in 2006 (Istanbul, Kitabevi). - A second account of this voyage, written by Imam Abdurrahman Efendi, who remained in Brazil for a while before returning to Istanbul, was published in 1871. It only briefly mentions the voyage to South America, instead focussing on the author's time in Brazil and his return journey. - Flaws to upper margins of several pages, rarely touching the text. - An intriguing documentation of an unplanned visit to the New World. TBTK 10454. Özege 17908. Cf. Snowden, Accidental Turks in Brazil and Beyond. Kabacali, Gezi edebiyati seçkisi (2004). Not in OCLC, Weber, or Cox.‎
