The quest for a state title has been a staple of sports novels for decades but first-time novelist Hollingsworth adds some unexpected twists in his sweet tale of five Oklahoma high school golfers growing up in the 1960s. The narrator is Kyle DeHart who excels in sports and academics but finds a home for his perfectionist tendencies on the golf course. Kyle's fellow underdogs who compete together to win the state championship are a diverse and engaging crew: nerdy dictionary-quoting Jay Justice; brash macho Peachy Waterman; mercurial Buster Nelson; and "jock supreme-o" L.K. Taylor. Hollingsworth's golf writing is folksy incisive and funny but he is less consistent in his descriptions of teenage social life. The major subplot is a clunky romantic triangle in which Kyle is forced to choose between his gorgeous and precocious girlfriend Amy Valente and an erratic former childhood friend named Gail Perdue who resurfaces and claims that destiny has brought them together. Stronger strands of the story describe Jay's effort to cope with the death of his dad in a plane crash and L.K.'s clashes with his own tyrannical father. There's some stock coming-of-age material and the treacly finale is especially clich d but Hollingsworth's portraits are vivid and affectionate. A solid effort that will please sports fans. Apr. First edition. - Extremely rare illustrated account of the trip taken by the Zurich gymnastic club "Alte Sektion" to the French national gymnastic festival held in Tunis on Easter 1912. It narrates the participants' 42-hour journey by ship from Marseille to Tunis as well as their impressions of the city before going on to describe the festival, including the Zurich squad's procession and the athletic competition. Instead of returning immediately after the festival, the group stayed in Africa for another week to visit Carthage, Dougga, Testour, and Constantine. - The full-page illustrations include the Zurich squad in their gymnastic attire and a Bedouin family with several camels. Loosely inserted are 14 original vintage photographs, some of them with contemporary pencil inscriptions on verso, further documenting the journey aboard the steamer, the short stay in Marseille, the festivities, palm trees before the Tunis cathedral, the trips to Dougga and Carthage, and a Tunesian procession. - Title-page with a few small marginal tears, otherwise in perfect condition. A very well preserved item commemorating the wide reach of the European gymnastics club movement. Not in auction records; the only other copies known are held at the Zentralbibliothek Zürich and the German National Library, Leipzig. OCLC 731661031.‎

‎Folio (310 x 220 mm). (46) ff., one final blank. Rubricated in red throughout and about half of the spaces left for initials filled in red by hand. 19th century red sheepskin, marbled sides. First edition of the popular "Imago mundi" of Honorius Augustodunensis (1080-1154), an incunabular encyclopaedia of popular cosmology and geography combined with a chronicle of world history, containing references to Arabia, Syria, Palestine, and the Saracens and thus providing one of the earliest mentions of Arabia ever printed. The monk Honorius takes the river Nile as the boundary between Africa and Asia (naming the latter continent in its entirety "India"). Arabia is described in the subsection on Mesopotamia. The description of this country, found along the Tigris and the Euphrates, also includes an account of the Kingdom of Sheba, home of the Queen of Sheba, and is said to be inhabited by the Moabites, Syrians, Saracens and others. After Mesopotamia we find Syria, including Phoenicia, which is followed by sections on Palestine and Egypt. - The "Imago mundi", which by scholarly consent was not published after 5 February 1473, exemplified the picture of Africa and the Orient prevalent in the West ca. 1100, which were perceived as lands full of marvels. It is one of the five earliest books printed by the great and prolific Nuremberg printer Anton Koberger. - Binding slightly rubbed; a few early manuscript annotations by a near-contemporary humanist in the margins. From the library of the Frankfurt physician Georg Franz Burkhard Kloß (1787-1854), also a noted historian of freemasonry, with his bookplate on pastedown; additional bookplate of Jean R. Perrette. Complete with the very rare appendix of maps. In reaction to the 1929 violent unrest in Palestine, the British government in 1930 sent the Shaw Commission ("Palestine. Statement with regard to British policy", Cmd. 3582) to report on the situation in the Mandate. This concluded that Jewish immigration pressurized and displaced the Arab population, and rejected the view that the Jewish National Home was the principal feature of the Mandate. The Shaw Commission recommended an investigation into Palestine's economic absorptive capacity of Jewish immigration, and the present publication, Sir John Hope Simpson's report, concluded that the increasing number of Jewish land purchases was leading to a growing population of landless Arabs. Hope Simpson's recommendations of reduced Jewish immigration and restrictions on land transfers were adopted by the Passfield White Paper ("Palestine. Statement of policy by His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom", Cmd. 3692) that same year. - Maps 1 and 6 with very small holes at some creasefolds and a few very short marginal tears and nicks, maps and accompanying text in appendix with light dog-earing. Map 3 apparently never issued. Wrappers to text volume faintly creased, appendix unevenly faded and extremities lightly rubbed. Extremely rare. Khalidi & Khadduri 1658. Cf. "In the dusk of his life, he moved to universal history, an endeavor that culminated with his Arca Noae, which comprised the chronicles of Europe, alongside descriptions of the cultures of China, Egypt, Assyria, ancient Greece, Rome, and pre-Columbian America, and surveys of their religion, art and literature" (Kowner). Entitled "Noah's Ark", it contains the history of the world starting at its creation up to the 17th century. It successively deals with all the great empires and kingdoms and their important founders and rulers. It contains narratives about the founding of Damascus, the founding of Arab kingdoms by Ishmael and Isaac, the caliphates, and the Turks. Beside sections dealing with the Middle East, the book deals with Chinese and American history as well, struggling with sources that predated the biblical sources. Hornius identified biblical figures with characters mentioned in early Chinese annals, suggesting that Cain's offspring had settled in China. Nevertheless, he rejected the possibility that some Chinese sources predated the flood for which Noah built his ark. - Born in Germany, Hornius later became a professor of history at Leiden University, the Netherlands. He mainly dealt with the topic of chronology, discussing how (world) history was to be divided into periods. Contemporary or near contemporary vellum, sewn on 4 vellum tapes laced through the joints, with a hollow back, with manuscript title on each spine. A collection of works devoted primarily to the ancient Hebrew, Greek, Roman and Arabic number systems, numismatics and mensuration, more than half (nominally 3 volumes) comprising the collected works of Matthäus Host (1509-87), numismatist and professor of Greek in Frankfurt an der Oder. After these follow works by Alessandro Sardi (1520-88) (misattributed to John Selden), Philippe Labbe (1607-67) and Guillaume Budé (1468-1540). Host published his most important works on the Hebrew and other Middle Eastern, Greek, Roman and Arabic number systems (plus "astronomical" numbers probably taken from Agrippa and Noviomagus), coins and related subjects in the years 1578 to 1582. His collected works were published in three volumes at Frankfurt am Main, dated 1586 old style (1587 new style), volume 3 containing 10 short works, the first in 4 parts (here numbered I-XIII in the contents but I-X in the titles). Budé's "De asse", first published at Paris in 1514, is generally regarded as the best Renaissance attempt to determine the values of ancient coins relative to each other and to contemporary money. Sardi published his "De nummis" (on numismatics) at Mainz in 1579, but it appears here as the work of the British scholar and lawyer John Selden (1584-1654), with his preliminary note dated from Middle Temple in London, 1 May 1642. Since he does not appear to have published it himself, it is unclear whether he plagiarized it, or whether it was mistakenly attributed to him when published at London in 1675. At that time it appeared together with Labbe's "Bibliotheca nummaria" and Budé's "De asse". Labbe's work first appeared as an appendix to his 1664 "Bibliotheca bibliothecarum" and describes books on the subject of antiquarian coins, medals, weights and measures. The ESTC suggests that "De nummis" in the "1675" London edition of these three works and in the present edition (which has a 1685 Edinburgh copy imprint) are both reissues of the 1579 edition, but comparing the "1675" and "1685" versions in EEBO with the 1579 Mainz edition shows that they represent three different editions and that the "1685" version on EEBO is the present one. No 1685 Edinburgh edition is known, so the reason for the 1685 copy imprint (and for Selden's 1642 note) remains unclear. Pending further study we suppose the "1685" edition was printed ca. 1692 for issue with the 1692 edition of Host's works, which was printed (according to the colophon) by Nisius in Jena and published (according to the imprints) by Johann Georg Lipper in Leipzig and Lüneburg, and by Peter Le Clert in Amsterdam. The present version is a reissue of all these works in the same editions as 1692, but now with the two 1695 title-pages for publication by Van der Aa in Leiden. - Each volume with the 19th-century yellow bookplate on the front pastedown of the library of the Baptist Newton Theological Institution near Boston, which later merged with the Andover Theological Seminary and became associated with Harvard University. - Lacking the divisional title (A1) for the Sardi/Selden, "De nummis", with its 1685 Edinburgh copy imprint. With some browning and foxing throughout, a small tear into the text of one leaf and in the margin of the first folding table. Otherwise in good condition. The binding of the first volume is somewhat dirty and each has one or two of the vellum tapes broken at the hinge, but they are still in good condition. A detailed account of numbers, coins, etc., especially in the Middle East and Greece. STCN (6 copies, incl. 2 incompl.). Cf. Fine copy of the authoritative second edition of Hottinger's chief work, expanded by several long sections in the original languages. "One of the most significant contributions to the history of Islam to have been published in the seventeenth century" and "a groundbreaking account of the history and basic tenets of Islam which relied almost entirely on authentic Islamic sources" (Loop). Principal work of the theologian Hottinger (1620-67), a founder of oriental linguistics. Includes extensive chapters on the Prophet's genealogy, the main doctrines and the religious context of Islam, as well as many lengthy quotations in Arabic. While preparing the "Historia Orientalis", Hottinger had to cope with several problems, the most important being the lack of Arabic printing types. In the first edition of 1651 he had solved this issue by transliterating the Arabic quotations into Hebrew and using Hebrew letters with 'niqquds' to cover the Arabic alphabet. In the 1650s, however, the Swiss printers Johann Jakob and Heinrich Bodmer had started the casting of Arabic, Syriac and Samaritan types in their own foundry, and the present second edition of the "Historia" could be printed with Arabic types. Hottinger presents the entire body of knowledge about Islamic history and religion available at the time. He revised the first edition, published in 1651, during his stay in Heidelberg in 1655, where he had been summoned by the Elector Palatine. - Some browning as common, but an outstanding copy, with the handwritten ownership of Elisabeth Malainda (gift, dated Höchstädt, 28 Dec. 1676) on the pastedown. Jean Humbert (1792-1851), a Geneva clergyman, learned Arabic in Paris under the auspices of Silvestre de Sacy and later pioneered the Arabic curriculum at the University of Geneva. - Binding rubbed, extremeties bumped and chipped, upper spine-end defective, front hinge starting. From the library of the oriental scholar Edouard Montet (1856-1934), professor at Geneva, with his bookplate on the front pastdown (with a fine quotation from Al-Zamakhshari in Arabic).
