‎Lafuente y Alcantara, Emilio.‎

‎Inscripciones arabes de Granada, precedidas de una reseña histórica y de la genealogía detallada de los reyes Alahmares. Madrid, Imprenta Nacional, 1859.‎

‎4to. XIII, (1), 15-242, (2) pp. With a folding family tree. Near-contemporary full vellum with giltstamped borders and spine title, original 1860 upper wrapper cover bound within. Endpapers with floral pattern. The first (and only early) edition of this detailed study of Arabic inscriptions found in Granada, with the texts of the inscriptions set in naskh Arabic type and also translated into Spanish. It includes many poems, notably those of Ibn Zamrak (1333-93), as well as Lafuente's overview of the history and genealogy of the Moorish Nasrid dynasty (1230-1492) that ruled the Emirate of Granada, the last Islamic realm in Spain. Emilio Lafuente y Alcantara (1825-68), a disciple of Don Pascual de Gayangos and José Moreno Nieto, includes much information from documents he had newly discovered himself. He was "gifted with great erudition and love of scholarship" and condemned mediaeval Christian intolerance of Islam, the destruction of Arabic manuscripts during the Inquisition and the damage done to the Alhambra by rebuilding under Charles V. In his present first major publication, Lafuente attempts to document surviving Arabic inscriptions in Spain before anyone could destroy or incompetently restore them. This quickly established him as one of the leading oriental scholars of the Iberian peninsula, but his work was cut short by his premature death nine years later. The book, reissued in 1860 with no change except for the date on the new wrappers, inspired a new interest in Iberian Arabic poetry, but was largely forgotten by bibliographers of Arabic studies. It was reprinted without revisions in 2000 and remains an important source for Islamic Granada. - Vellum covers slightly warped. Paper evenly browned throughout; slightly foxed in places. Near-contemporary handwritten English annotations in ink and pencil to p. 169, correcting Lafuente's claim that a large vase had disappeared from the Alhambra and probably is to be found "ornamenting the cabinet of some Englishman, passionate for our things": "This is a mistake entirely. The great 2nd jar is in the Museum at Madrid [...]". James T. Monroe, Islam and the Arabs in Spanish scholarship (1970), pp. 119-122. Palau 129800. ‎Laiglesia y Darrac, Francisco.‎

‎Memoria sobre la cría caballar de España: causas del aniquilamiento de nuestros caballos, verdadero modo de entenderse y verificarse en nuestro clima la cruza con los de países estrangeros y mejora para su regeneracion y engrandecimiento [...]. [Madrid], 1830.‎

‎Folio (30 cm). Double-page ink wash drawing of the idealized (Arabian-bred) Spanish horse, [8], 198, [4 blank], [2], 25 pp; with separate 13 pp. of addenda. Bound in contemporary half black calf over marbled boards, gilt titles and ornaments on spine. Binding a little rubbed, contents very good. Manuscript on Spanish watermarked paper "Manuel Serra 1829", written in neat cursive throughout with occasional flourishes. Signed twice by the author, "Francisco De Laiglesia Y Darrac", dated "Madrid 24 Mayo de 1830". Bookplate on pastedown of the noted Spanish collector José Gallart Folch. Highly important manuscript, being the author's autograph copy - possibly for presentation to the dedicatee (the King of Spain). Darrac's groundbreaking treatise on the admixture of Arabian bloodlines to the Spanish horse was subsequently accepted by the King and printed 'by Royal decree' in the following year, 1831. "To assure that Spain would have ready supply of quality horses and mules, the recommendations first purposed by Francisco Laiglesia Y Darrac in his brilliant 1831 book Memoria sobre la cria caballar en Espana - causas del aniquilamiento de nuestros caballos (Thesis on Horse Breading in Spain- Causes of the Annihilation of Our Horses) were finally adopted. Laiglesia might well be called the father of the Arabian horse of Spain, because he was the first to advocate the importation of a large group of desert-bred stallions and mares as the only means of recuperating the lost qualities in Spain's horses. In the same work he also articulated the first detailed plan for the creation of the Cria Caballar, the Stud Book Español, the National Stud" (Steen). - A horse expert with the Royal Army, Laiglesia's treatise is wonderfully detailed and shows a thorough knowledge of Arabians and their bloodlines. His main thesis argues that with the introduction of as few as 20 of the best pure-bred Arabians, the entire country's stock of horses can be 'regenerated' in a few generations. To this end he launches into an in-depth discussion of the logistics of this plan, ranging from discussions of the desert Bedouin origin of the purest Arabians, from the regions surrounding Sanaa and Nedjed-el-Areb in the Arabian Gulf (Section 65) to an intimate familiarity with the different classes of Arabians from these bloodlines (Hatiks or Kadischi & Kochlani). Laiglesia notes with admiration that the practice of recording the bloodlines of these Arabians is extremely meticulous at the court of the Emir. - Laiglesia also addresses the problems of how to select the best pure-bred Arabians based on proportion, etc., as well as the difficulties in procuring them. He insists that they must be purchased 'on-site' in Arabia Felix and then brought to a station in Aleppo for inspection, en route to Spain. Laiglesia even suggests the most comfortable means of transporting the precious horses (by warship, rather than a smaller merchant vessel which doesn't have enough space). Interestingly, one measure for Laiglesia of the superiority of Arabians is their excellence in horse-races: he points out that all the greatest English champions (Flying Childers, High Flyer, Eclipse, etc.) have all been bred from Arabian stock. - The present author's manuscript and its illustration in fact show significant differences compared to the printed book, which is itself extremely rare (just 3 copies worldwide, according to OCLC). For the printed book, cf OCLC 63603570 (U Barcelona, British Library, U Penn); Palau 130186; Fairman Rogers Collection on the Horse, 453. Cf also Andrew K. Steen, El Caballo Arabe en España, 1831 a 1934 (2007).‎

‎The Bosporus and Istanbul. [Istanbul], 1875.‎

‎Oil on wood. Signed and dated. Framed (455 x 258 mm). Museum-quality panoramic painting of Istanbul with steamships and sailboats on the Golden Horn and the Hagia Sophia in the background. The foreground is dominated by the Grand Vezier Hüseyin Avni Pasha in a coach, escorted by horsemen, surrounded by a crowd. - The Regensburg-born Heinrich Lang, noted painter of horses and battles as well as writer and illustrator, studied with Karl Steffek in Berlin, Friedrich Voltz and Franz Adam in Munich and Adolf Schreyer in Paris. He travelled to Greece and Turkey and proved himself a careful observer of Ottoman costume and culture. His colourful paintings of Turkish tradesmen, camel drivers, donkey-drawn wagons and splendidly decorated carriages show his great attention to detail and were greeted by contemporaries as a much-welcomed relief from the grey military scenes that had dominated the previous years (cf. ADB Ll, 551).‎

‎Vesuv: Leben und Tod am brennenden Berg. P. Werner Lange‎

‎Zürich: AS-Verl. 2011. 279 S.: zahlr. Ill., Kt.; 25 cm Pappe‎

ROS3-3 ISBN: 9783909111893‎

From the Dust Jacket: "A VIEW FROM THE RED TEES challenges through humor sometimes wry the stereotypes and discrimination that women golfers face today. Golf was once a male-dominated game and the links remain a pivotal field where business and political agendas are played out - but today women are shouldering their clubs and making their own deals on the greens. These women don't get equal treatment when they tee off though. The book celebrates the camaraderie and competition among women golfers." . First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. ‎Latham, Simon.‎

‎Latham's faulconry, or The faulcons lure and cure: in two books. The first concerning the ordering and training up of all hawks in generall; especially the haggard faulcon-gentle. The second, teaching approved medicines for the cure of all diseases in them. London, Richard Hodgkinson for Thomas Rooks, 1658.‎

‎Small 8vo. 2 parts in one volume. (34), 176; (24), 144, (8) pp. With woodcut frontispiece of "The Haggard Faulcon" instead of the additional engraved title-page found in some copies. Second title with woodcut vignette of a gentleman riding his horse with his hawk on his arm. Second part with woodcuts in text, woodcut head-pieces and decorative initials. 19th century calf, prettily gilt. Marbled endpapers. Pocket-sized reissue of Latham's books on falconry, the former of which had first appeared in 1614. "Latham dedicated this, his first book of Falconry, to Sir Thomas Monson (or Munson, as he phonetically spells the name), Baronet, Master of his Maiestie's Armory, and Master of the Hawkes to his Highnesse" (Harting, p. 15). The second part is Latham's "New and Second Book of Faulconry", first published in 1618 and "usually bound up with the first" (Harting, p. 16). "Ordering and training of all hawks in general and especially the haggard falcon gentle. Approved medicines for the cure of all their difficulties. A very rare and valuable work" (USAF Academy Library, Special Bibliography Series No. 38: Falconry, p. 14). The frontispiece depicts tools of the falconer's trade. - Some spotting and staining throughout; lacking final blank. Lower corner of fol. A2 in the first part torn with slight loss of text (professionally remargined). From the personal collection of the gentleman and Knightsbridge manuscript dealer Myles Colbeck Radford (1897-1963) with his armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Harting 20 (note). Souhart 285 (note). Wing L568 & L569. OCLC 228729034. Cf. Schwerdt I, 302.‎

‎[Usul-i mimari-î Osmanî]. L’Architecture Ottomane. Ouvrage autorisé par Iradé Impérial et publie sous le patronage de Son Excellence Edhem Pacha, Ministre des Travaux Publics, Président de la Commision Imperiale Ottomane pour L'Exposition Universelle de 1873, à Vienne. / Die Ottomanische Baukunst [...]. Constantinople, Imprimerie et Lithographie Centrales / Pascal Sebah, 1873.‎

‎Folio (390 x 518 mm). VII, (1), 81, (4), 82-86, (2) pp.; 58 pp. With 190 lithographed plates (14 in colour). Modern full black morocco gilt, spine in six compartments gilt, remains of original wrapper cover title inset within lower cover. First and only edition of "the earliest comprehensive study on the history and theory of Ottoman architecture" (Ersoy, p. 117). Only a few copies of this rare work, produced to the most exacting standards of the day, appear to have been printed. It was produced under the patronage of Edhem Pasha, president of the Imperial Ottoman Commission for the Vienna Exhibition of 1873. The text (in German and French, followed by Turkish) consists of a series of monographs. The entire work was "prepared [...] by a diverse group of artists, architects, and bureaucrats who had close professional ties with the palace. The text begins with a lengthy historical overview that embodies a pioneering attempt to define and represent the entire Ottoman architectural past according to the norms of modern historiography [...] The editor of the whole volume, and the author of a substantial portion of the original text, was the amateur historian and artist Victor Marie de Launay, a 'naturalized' Frenchman who held a secretarial position in the Ministry of Trade and Public Works [...] With a keen scholarly interest in architecture, art, and traditional crafts, Marie de Launay, throughout his lengthy bureaucratic career in the imperial capital, was deeply involved in the representation of the Ottoman state in the world expositions [...] The expertly crafted plates that supplement the text of the 'Usul' include plans, elevations, and section of various Ottoman buildings as well as a rich panoply of decorative details and ornamental patterns, all meticulously depicted in accordance with the academic standards of the Beaux-Arts model [...] Accompanying the monochrome illustrations are fourteen chromolithographic plates (printed in the Sébah studios in Istanbul), skillfully drafted with vibrant and sharply delineated colors. In the superior technical quality and graphic precision of its illustrations, the 'Usul' is duly comparable to its highly acclaimed European counterparts, such as Owen Jones's 'The Grammar of Ornament' (London, 1956), Auguste Racinet's 'L'ornement polychrome' (Paris, 1869), or Jules Bourgoin's 'Les arts arabes' (Paris, 1873). Thus, leaving aside the intellectual scope of its text, the 'Usul' must be considered an artistic specimen in and of itself, conceived as a unique showcase of Ottoman technical competence in the art of publishing" (ibid., p. 117-120). The set is not infrequently encountered incomplete: even the Blackmer copy lacked a plate, and that of William Morris (now in the Calouste Gulbenkian Library) lacked three. - Occasional slight brownstaining (not concerning plates), but entirely complete and finely bound to style. Blackmer 956. OCLC 5465203. A. Ersoy, "Architecture and the Search for Ottoman Origins in the Tanzimat Period", in: J. Bailey et al. (ed.), History and Ideology [Leiden 2007], p. 117ff. ‎Lauthier, [Pierre-Jean-Baptiste], French lawyer (fl. 1694-1718).‎

‎Autograph letter signed ("Lauthier"). Paris, 16. II. 1715.‎

‎4to. 3½ pp. on bifolium with integral address panel. A first-hand account of the sensational entry of Mohamed Reza Bey, the Persian ambassador who visited Paris for six months beginning 7 February 1715. Adressed to Monsieur de Gallice, councillor of the Parliament of Aix-en-Provence, for delivery to the Parliament's Advocate General, Gaspard de Gueidan (1688-1767), the letter describes the ambassador's arrival, his reception (which is likened to that of a Pope), and the craze he creates among the onlookers, who sing, dance, and stare at him as at a strange animal: "Souffrez, mon charmans magistrats, que je vous presente une morale que je ne sais guere [...] - The ambassador Mohamed Reza Bey (Mehmet Riza Beg) had been chosen for the mission by the Shah of Persia, Sultan Husayn, and travelled with a grand entourage, as befitted the diplomat of a mighty empire. He was solemnly received in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles on 19 February 1715 with one of the most lavish ceremonies of the final months of the reign of Louis XIV. During his stay he conducted negotiations towards establishing trade treaties between Persia and France, and conferred with the French on possible joint military operations against the Ottoman Empire. The ambassador's exotic personage inspired the French imagination to create a whole artistic and literary current, the most lasting product of which are Montesquieu's "Lettres Persanes" (1725). - The lawyer Pierre Lauthier, a celebrated orator in his day, was the son of the Aix-based medical writer Honoré Maria Lauthier. Although most bibliographies credit the latter with the biographical preface to Joseph de Tournefort's posthumously published "Voyage into the Levant" (simply signed "Lauthier"), it is not unlikely that Pierre, with his penchant for the exotic, is the actual author of the Life of that famous Aix-born botanist and Middle East traveller (cf. Wellcome III, 458). - Removed from a registry, with traces of mounting along the left edge of p. 1. Traces of oribial folds; slight edge defects, some from removal of the seal, but well preserved on the whole.‎

‎Lawrence, T[homas] E[dward], British explorer, intelligence officer, and writer (1888-1935).‎

‎Autograph letter signed ("TE Shaw"). Clouds Hill, Moreton, Dorset, 15. X. 1924.‎

‎8vo. 2 pp. With autogr. envelope. Includes TDS by G. E. B. Bromley-Martin, of the Bank of Liverpool and Martin, London (dated 22 Dec. 1924). To Whitney H. Shepardson of New York, who had inquired as to how he might obtain a copy of the "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" when the book was finally published: "The Prophet has sent me on your letter, with instructions to deal with it: - and I'm puzzled. Really you know you are foolish to want a copy. It's a thirty guinea book, of which so many copies are being sold as will meet the printing bills (about 120 copies perhaps) with some off-prints of the unadorned text for the twenty or thirty fellows who shared the campaign with me. I can't give them 30-guinea presents: they can't buy 30-guinea books. So I want the subscribers to pay for my generosity in giving them free copies. The prime cost lies in the pictures (about 60, many in colour, at 10/- a print!) and the pictures are only an unjustifiable whim of mine. They have been done by British artists whom I liked, + who would work for me. Such a luxury book is for the idle rich. Mrs. Lamont is getting one. Huntingdon [!] + Pierpont Morgan aren't...! ... Do you feel justified in chucking away so much on an amateur production? The writing is pretentious, dull, hysterical, egotistical, + preternaturally long. No human being has ever been to the end of it [the 335,000 word ms.]. They return it, thumbed to about half way, with pretty speeches. So long as I hold it secret, the sight of it is a boast, so long it will be praised. Seriously, it isn't any earthly good. It costs as I have said, may be a year yet in printing, + is horrible in parts. Eleanor (beg her pardon, but that's her only possible name. The proper ones only indicate her wayward choice of parents etc.) would be sick over it. The thing will not be reprinted entire in my life-time: you suggest 'for a long time.' ... but the prospect isn't pleasing. There will be an American Edition, to secure copyright. Doubleday, probably. He has made a reasonable estimate. It would be printed at my expense, two copies for the Library of Congress, or whatever the show is, + eight for sale: + the sale price will be prohibitive, so that they will never sell, + the edition will never be exhausted, + no one may pirate! I suggest 10,000 dollars, but F.N.D. hasn't yet considered what is above-high-water-mark in U.S.A. Tell me, please, if you are knowing! If despite all faults (my most honest dissuasion puts people on sometimes!) you want a copy: then you'll have to send fifteen guineas, half price - E. will know the size of the extinct coin - to: Manager / Bank of Liverpool + Martins / 68 Lombard St. / London, E.C.3, payable to TE Lawrence, + 'Seven Pillars account'. Balance when you get the book. Let me strongly urge you not to. I have 90 subscribers, so there is no urgency - on the point of helping lame dogs! [...]". - When the book finally appeared in 1926, the cost of each copy to Lawrence was triple the selling price, and it was not until the fourth reprint of the 1927 abridgement "Revolt in the Desert" that his debts were paid off. As the included receipt shows, Shepardson was undeterred and duly transferred the £15. 15/- to Liverpool & Martins' (the last copy of the 1926 "Pillars" at auction commanded £30,000 at Sotheby's in 2009). - The U.S. businessman Whitney Hart Shepardson (1890-1966), educated at Colgate, Balliol (as a Rhodes Scholar), and Harvard, had served as aide to the State Department at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, where he may have met Lawrence. Between 1925 and 1927 he served as director on J. D. Rockefeller's General Education Board. A leading O.S.S. operative in WWII, he was the first London head of Secret Intelligence and remained with the organization soon to become the C.I.A. until 1946.‎

‎4to. 1 p. To a Mr. Bain, apparently a bookseller: "I am unfortunate: I need one of my own rotten books - a Revolt in the Desert, any late edition. Can you find one cheap? Send me those Irish Memories, too, about which you sent me a chit ... and are there any of S. Sassoon's skits on Wolfe (Pinchbeck Lyre's) to be got? Any edition. I wanted two. There is also a book called 'Juan in America' which I must read. Nothing else, I hope [...]". - Traces of folds.‎

‎Lawrence, T[homas] E[dward], British explorer, intelligence officer, and writer (1888-1935).‎

‎Autograph letter signed ("TE Shaw"). Southampton, 18. VII. 1934.‎

‎8vo. 2 pp. and 2 lines on bifolium. "Dear Lady Young I wonder if you (and His Ex.) are still there? Your letter to me sat at 2 Smith Square (Sir H. B. not knowing my whereabouts) till last night, when I called and collected it. I am sorry. Most of my addresses are like that. Would you be so good as to register / T. E. Shaw / Clouds Hill / Moreton / Dorset / as my likeliest spot, in future? It represents my cottage on the heath, which will be home after March when the RAF bring themselves, not reluctantly, to dispense with my help? I'm sorry not to have seen you. I wanted, while you were yet in Nyasa-land, to beg of His Ex. The rectangular skin of a small (1 sq. yard) lion, for my hearth-rug. But Ronald Storrs whom I saw at Southampton about a month ago told me you had been promoted to his province, and that there were no lions. Ronald was physically a very sick man. Mentally he was fighting hard to keep brisk… too hard for his health, I fear. The wreck of an old companion is too near a sight for sorrow, even. I hope Africa suits, after your trial of Asia and Europe. My respects to the Governor! Tell him I saw the fraudulent Abdulla, the other day. Exactly as he was, body & mind. Now, that's the way. / Yours sincerely TE Shaw / A poor letter: but I picture you again in Africa, and my squib spluttering in the void". - Between 1916 to 1918, Abdullah I of Jordan worked with the British guerrilla leader T. E. Lawrence (with whom he had actually never jarred), and played a key role as architect and planner of the Great Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule, leading guerrilla raids on garrisons. From 1921 until his assassination in 1951, Abdullah ruled Jordan, first as Emir under a British Mandate from 1921 to 1946, then as King of an independent nation from 1946 onwards.‎

Uniform decorated brown cloth. Reprint of a work on archeology in China, published in the years 1922-1933, written by the German orientalist and archaeologist Albert von Le Coq (1860-1930). From 1902 to 1914, Le Coq led three of the four German expeditions to the Turfan (or Turpan) area, in Xingjian, China. The expeditions were initiated by the German archaeologist Albert Grünwedel. "The principal spoils of these expeditions were literary. Vast numbers of Chinese manuscripts were obtained from every center, both secular and religious. … Besides securing manuscripts, these expeditions examined caves decorated with stucco figures and with frescoes…" (Couling). The text gives a brief history of the expeditions, the different sites they excavated, including grottoes and temples, which are also shown on some of the smaller illustrations, followed by descriptions of the objects shown on the plates. "The civilization thus revealed is a mixture of Persian, Indian, Chinese, Hellenic etc." (Couling). Both Grünwedel and Le Coq went back to Berlin with thousands of artefacts, of which many are shown in the plates. The second volume, titled Die Manichaeischen Miniaturen, deals with fragments of illuminated manuscripts, the other volumes deal mainly with either sculpture, mural paintings or frescoes and their techniques. The fourth expedition ended early due to the outbreak of the First World War, but compared to the earlier expeditions they collected the most artefacts during this short stay. - All volumes in very good condition.
