Warner Bob Drawings by B. O'Brian
DON'T BLAME THE FISH
New York: Winchester Press 1974. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. Not quite fiction but certainly not nonfiction either Don't Blame the Fish is described by its author as nonsense based on actual happenings. All of the characters--well nearly all--are people you'd like to fish with and have a few drinks with after your sport. Warner's witty words are complimented perfectly by the light-hearted illustrations of New Yorker cartoonist William B O'Brian. Warner has been fishing addictively since he was a child and even found the time while serving with the OSS during World War II to sample the streams and rivers of China Burma India and Ceylon. Former library book with usual stickers and marks affecting mostly the endpages. There is a very faint library stamp on the leading edge page block. Book is in very good condition with minor edge wear. The dust jacket not clipped is rubbed and bumped at stress points and has a small piece missing off the inside front flap. Covered in plastic that has smudges and surface scuffing and yellowed taped. The picture is a scan of the actual book. Winchester Press hardcover

He helpd in the holds gutting freezing and salting fish. He shared the quarters and belowdecks palaver sharing their food their stories and their lives. Warner tells us in vivid dialogue and action-filled narrative about the maritime life of the men of many nations and tongues; about the waning resources of the fishery; about those who refined the competence of fishing technology to the point of diminishing returns; about the extension of offshore limits. In an epilogue he explains how the new fishing leviathans nearly fished the ocean out but ran short of business before it was too late. . Little, Brown hardcover
