br. La boxe: adorata o detestata; impossibile comunque che risulti indifferente. Proprio per tale ragione, tra i tanti libri dedicati alle storie del ring, sono stati concepiti e scritti "I racconti delle sedici corde". L'intento dell'autore è certo interessare coloro che amano una delle più antiche e gloriose discipline sportive, ma anche e soprattutto quello di coinvolgere chi il pugilato non lo conosce o addirittura lo rifiuta. I protagonisti si muovono attorno alle corde del quadrato, ma le loro vicende altro non sono che un piccolo "spaccato" delle mille avventure che la vita riserva a ciascuno di noi, talvolta epiche, altre drammatiche, più spesso anonime. Il "dietro le quinte" della boxe, dove probabilmente si manifesta la parte più affascinante di questo sport che non è solo sport, alla fine non è che un'occasione per trovarsi a contatto con vari problemi esistenziali di giovani e meno giovani, indipendentemente dal fatto che essi abbiano i guantoni alle mani.

br. Le sfide dall'esito scontato tolgono entusiasmo. Questo libro racconta le notti di idoli sconfitti, di comprimari trasformati in campioni. Storie di pugili consapevoli del loro destino, comunque pronti ad approfittare di qualsiasi distrazione o rilassamento del campione di turno, per cercare di batterlo senza alcuna remora. Tra le corde del ring si colgono metafore della vita, in fondo le vicende che riguardano le battaglie combattute con i guantoni sono simili a quelle che incrociamo ogni giorno sul nostro cammino. Un libro per ricordare quegli incontri che sorpresero tutti e di cui furono protagonisti pugili italiani. Testimoni eclatanti di qualcosa che aveva sconvolto le previsioni. In bene e in male. Non si sapeva mai cosa il ring avrebbe riservato in quella sera, così come in quasi tutte le altre. Nomi noti e meno noti, tra questi solo Angelo Jacopucci e Giovanni Parisi, purtroppo, non sono più tra noi. I combattimenti descritti risalgono a tempi nemmeno molto remoti. Non a caso, ma per dimostrare che quando non si sapeva "come andava a finire", crisi o non crisi, il pugilato manteneva ancora pressoché integro il proprio magico fascino di "sport-non solo sport", di disciplina dove tutto poteva accadere.

The author of this guide indicates he seeks to appeal specifically to the gentleman wanting to protect himself from 'the insolence so peculiar to the manners of the lower order of people in this country.' But he has special advice for professional practitioners of the pugilistic art with hints for preparing for a scheduled fight which include taking 'a pint of best red wine mulled with a tablespoonful of brandy' on the morning itself. This manual was written at an important juncture in the sport and focuses on two practitioners who impelled boxing forward greatly - Daniel Mendoza and Richard "The Gentleman Boxer" Humphries who famously fought three bare-knuckle bouts between 1788 and 1790 the third of which was the first time spectators were charged an entry-payment to a sporting event. Before Mendoza boxers generally stood still and merely swapped punches. Mendoza's 'scientific style' consisted of more than simply battering opponents into submission and included much defensive movement. He developed an entirely new style of boxing incorporating such defensive strategies as what he called 'side-stepping' moving around ducking blocking and generally avoiding punches. At the time this was revolutionary and Mendoza was able to overcome much heavier opponents as a result of this new style. Though he stood only five feet seven inches and weighed only 160 pounds Mendoza was England's sixteenth Heavyweight Champion from 1792 to 1795 and is the only middleweight to ever win the Heavyweight Championship of the World. Mendoza helped transform the popular English stereotype of a Jew from a weak defenceless person into someone deserving of respect. He is said to have been the first Jew to talk to the King George III. Mendoza was second for Tom Molineaux a freed Virginia slave in his fights. In 1789 - the year this book was issued in London - he opened his own boxing academy there.
