No marks or inscriptions. A very clean very tight copy with bright unmarked laminated boards and minor bump to upper front corner. Dust jacket not price clipped or marked with nicks/small tears to upper corners and small enclosed hole near top of spine. 128pp. A study of one of boxing's greatest eras - between the 1850s and the 1890s when bare-knuckle fighting had its heyday. The author himself was World Light Weight Champion in 1874. With full-page photographs of 57 boxers from that era and a profile of each on the opposite page. A large book. Hardback edition very scarce in the UK.

Octavo 20th-century three-quarter red morocco gilt raised bands marbled endpapers all edges gilt. $3000.Early edition of this boxing classic with 50 engraved plates including an engraved vignette title page in Volume I 45 portraits and four folding plates of boxing matches handsomely bound by Bayntun.Egan was probably one of boxing's most enthusiastic and ardent disciples. Egan devotes a major part of Boxiana to a history of the boxing careers of about over a hundred boxers often including a round to round account of the famous fights of a particular boxer such as Jim Belcher Tom Cribb Dan Mendoza Tom Molyneaux 'Gentleman' John Jackson and many others. First published in 1812 Boxiana proved so popular that Egan expanded the work to an eventual four volumes; the fourth volume was written by another author after Egan briefly lost the rights to the series but after securing the rights to the title he published a further two volumes as part of a New Series. With Volume II only of the New Series. Without the portrait of Alexander Reed in the last volume but with an additional plate depicting ""A Sparring Match at the Fives Court"" in Volume III. Owner signature.Plates occasionally trimmed a bit close a few leaves with marginal paper repairs in the last volume. Very handsomely bound. hardcover

The cover features Sugar Ray Robinson and Randy Turpin promoting the idea of a third fight. Turpin a relatively unknown British middleweight took Robinson's crown away in July 1951. A few months later Robinson regained the title by stopping Turpin in the 10th. A third fight never happened. A wonderful early issue of Ring Magazine with some great content. Articles provide coverage of fights between Primo Carnera and Max Bear Barney Ross and Tony Canzoneri and Jimmy McLarnin and Al Singer. Another article covers the career of 'The Boston Tar Baby' Sam Langford. Langford was one of the best African American fighters of his day but was avoided by both black and white fighters. After winning the heavyweight title Jack Johnson preferred to take on to the hill white fighters than face a real challenge from Langford. Boxing would leave him blind and he never even got one shot at the title despite an incredible career. </p> The Ring Inc., books

The cover features Joe Louis and Jersey Joe Walcott which set the stage for a return bout on June 25 1948. After a difficult first fight which many believed Walcott won Louis won by a knockout in the second bout. This issue provides a lot of information on Joe Louis including a detailed account of his ring earnings. Perhaps the significance of this contest was that it would be only the third time in history that two African Americans would fight for the heavyweight title. However boxing’s' color line was not as rigid as some other sports and by the late 1940s there had been several African American world champions. </p> The Ring Inc., books

The cover paves the way for the first Zale and Graziano title bout. However the big news of this issue was the article on the return match between heavyweight champ Joe Louis and Billy Conn. A few years earlier Conn outboxed Louis and was on his way to winning the fight until he got careless and was knocked out in the 13th round. He would do no better in the return engagement and was counted out in round eight. This issue has some good coverage of middleweight and welterweight fights.</p> The Ring Inc., books
