br. La spada ha una posizione centrale nella cultura e nella storia del Giappone, ed è associata soprattutto ai samurai, la classe militare che fiorì tra il 1200 e il 1600. Nato come arciere a cavallo, il samurai lasciò poi l'arco per la lancia. Dal 1600 iniziò una nuova era di pace e armi come la lancia passarono in secondo piano; tecniche basate sull'uso dell'armatura furono rimpiazzate da altre che sfruttavano la mobilità permessa dagli indumenti civili. Poiché la spada era indossata ogni giorno dal samurai, fu in questo periodo storico che essa divenne il fulcro della sua identità marziale e la scherma la sua arte principale. In alcune scuole vennero introdotte le spade di bambù e un'armatura per l'addestramento, permettendo una sorta di combattimento. Il kendo moderno è una disciplina in cui la destrezza con la spada non è volta alla vittoria, ma alla crescita personale. I testi qui pubblicati, che coprono il periodo dal sette all'ottocento, sottolineano infatti l'importanza dei fattori interiori che coinvolgono la mente e lo spirito: la vera essenza dell'arte. I praticanti delle scuole intraprendevano lunghi periodi di allenamento ascetico allo scopo di raggiungere una sorta di illuminazione marziale, ossia lo stato di "non mente". Solo questo rende invincibili, non le tecniche, non la forza, né la destrezza. Finché nella mente esiste un avversario, quello potrà avere la meglio.

Original brown painted paper softcovers manuscript label on front cover punch-sewn in Japanese style at gutter margin some edgewear scuffing rubbing to covers thumbing to fore-edges of textblock a VG bright exemplar in blue folding slipcase bone clasps at fore-edges minor sunning to fore-edges of slipcase. A fantastic illustrated late Edo-period manuscript detailing the banners displayed by assorted Daimyo Houses connected with the forces allied with Toyotomi Hideyoshi his heirs Hashiba Hidekatsu Toyotomi Hideyori and the opposing Tokugawa clans during the Sengoku period. The manuscript opens with a detailed hand-coloured diagram of Osaka castle the last stronghold of the Toyotomi clan site of the sieges and battles resulting in the destruction of the Toyotomi clan by the Tokugawa in 1615. In addition the artist has painted a wall fortification elevation showing the steep stone base at the foot of the wall which would lead into a moat as well as illustration of large ship with rowers’ oars through portholes at stem and stern of the vessel. The work details most of the clans allied with the Hideyoshi or Toyotomi Clan and the opposing Tokugawa clan forces including many of the sub-clans or Daimyo houses. Many of these are depicted with different styles of Nobori Japanese long narrow flags attached to poles; a number of different Uma-jirushi -- very large banners indicating Daimyo commanders and houses on the battlefield; Sashimono which were small banners worn on the backs of ashigaru foot soldiers and Samurai as well as symbols on paper lanterns and pennants. The crests or “Mon†include the reverse swastika for the Hacisuka Masakatsu family who were allied with the Tokugawa lan Three Hollyhock leaves inside a circle indicating Tokugawa retainers as well including specific examples of Nobori banner used by Shimazu Matsadaaira Iehisa Tadatsune 1576-1638 second son of Yoshihiro who laed the Shimazu army during the Osaka Winter Campaign for the Tokugawa; the “Bell†emblem Uma-jirushi banner used by the three generations of the Omura clan including Omura Sumitada 1531-1587 Christian name was Don Bartolomeo; Omura Yoshiaki 1568-1616 Christian name Don Sancho who led 1000 men in Korea under Konishi Yukinaga and Omura Suminobu Don Bartolomeo who although baptized Christian would later prosecute Christians and aided in crushing the Shimabarra rebellion; banners of Ikeda Mitsumasa 1609-82 who became Daimyo of Okayama upon the death of his father Ikeda Toshitaka 1584-1616 who took part in the Osaka campaign and many more. Externally a little rubbed and soiled internally a little browned and with occasional light creasing but overall very good. First Yoshikawa Hanshichi editions of these detailed Edo-period guides. The first displays the correct method of putting on a harness of Japanese armour from fundoshi - underpants - out; the second focuses on the specific ceremonial and court headgear worn by various officials. The detail of the illustrations is superb and the quality colouring really striking throughout. OCLC locates 4 copies of the first volume and 5 copies of the second. Il libro non guarda solo ad autori conosciuti come Kurosawa Akira e Mizoguchi Kenji, ma anche alle opere di registi innovativi come Ito Daisuke, Yamanaka Sadao, Kobayashi Masaki, Gosha Hideo e tanti altri.
