Japan: from the end in trans.: “copied by KÅno KyÅ«bei Michifumi 河野ä¹å¹³ 通文 March 1859â€.<br /> <BR> <BR> A finely illustrated manuscript with a series of delicate and richly decorated images of kyÅzen special banquets that during their preparation employed highly ritualized fish and fowl cutting techniques. This culinary art form involved the cutting up of various fish and birds using only a knife and two metal chopsticks without touching the flesh with one’s hands. The purpose was not to eat the cut-up meats but to showcase the very considerable techniques used and the resulting fanciful display of the parts of the fish and fowl. These banquets developed during the Muromachi period 1336-1573 for shogunal visitations onari to high-ranking warriors and temples. They “featured multiple trays of food served simultaneously to guests beginning with a main tray honzen and several auxiliary trays served adjacent to it in front of the diner.â€â€“Eric C. Rath Food and Fantasy in Early Modern Japan Berkeley: 2010 p. 60 & see the whole chapter “Ceremonial Banquets†for an excellent introduction to these complex and symbolic rituals.<br /> <BR> <BR> Following the first three black & white drawings of two sword rests and a tray for placing outer garments we encounter a series of 48 color illustrations of elaborate displays of foods of many kinds all with decorative elements that have deep meanings. All the illustrations have accompanying texts with very poetic titles describing the displays their places in the sequence of dishes the materials and preparations involved in the dishes and suggestions of the symbolism of each dish. For instance the turtle lobster and crane represent long life; rice represents plentitude; and carp symbolizes of good luck.<br /> <BR> <BR> Minor marginal worming but a fine copy preserved in a chitsu. unknown

Un'epoca durante la quale decine di famiglie di samurai si affrontarono animate dal grande sogno di unificare il paese sotto il controllo di un unico padrone. Nella prima parte del libro, l'autore prende in esame le principali istituzioni politiche, la situazione sociale ed economica, il contatto con gli europei e il rapporto con la religione cristiana. Il volume entra poi nel cuore della trattazione raccontando la vita e le gesta dei più famosi daimyo e samurai, la loro etica, le tecniche di combattimento e soprattutto come si faceva guerra nel Giappone feudale. In queste pagine si susseguono i nomi romantici di grandi guerrieri come Imagawa Yoshimoto, Oda Nobunaga, Takeda Shingen e Toyotomi Hideyoshi che - insieme ad altri - si alternarono in sanguinosissime battaglie quali Okehazama, Nagashino, Sekigahara, Tennoji e tante altre. Alla fine solo uno riuscì a portare a termine la missione assegnata dal destino: Tokugawa Ieyasu, di cui seguiremo le gesta dai primi timidi tentativi per imporre il potere fino alla sua divinizzazione. Già pubblicato con il titolo "II sole e il ciliegio" (2011), questa nuova edizione amplia il volume originario descrivendo campagne e battaglie in precedenza solo accennate ed è inoltre arricchita da mappe appositamente realizzate.

From her clothing and weaponry she is an onna-musha female samurai. The elegantly dressed figures strolling beneath cherry blossoms in the Golden Pavilion Kinkaku-ji gardens capturing the seasonal beauty of the spring flower viewing season against an iconic Kyoto temple gardens. Chikanobu active during the Meiji era was known for his prints of women bijin-ga courtly subjects and scenes combining traditional aesthetics with modern sensibilities. The soft features fan and full hair as opposed to the traditional chonmage shave worn by male samurai indicate that this is a female warrior. Vibrantly colored and clean with some minor discoloration and light spotting throughout. Verso enforced with newsprint. Some light wear at right edge. Overall very good condition. An elegant and unusual artistic depiction of a female samurai in the famous gardens of the Golden Pavilion. unknown

This elaborate original woodblock print by Utagawa Sadahide depicts the legendary return of Empress JingÅ« after her mythical conquest of Korea. Horizontal triptych woodblock print 35 × 73 cm 14 × 28.5 in. All three sheets are present and physically joined. Signed Gountei Sadahide ga Utagawa Sadahide. Dated 1842. Empress JingÅ« is known in Japanese mythos as a powerful ruler and military leader and celebrated for her purported conquest of the Korean peninsula and expansion of Japan’s imperial influence. Though her story is semi-legendary and debated among historians she remains a powerful cultural figure symbolizing divine leadership and martial prowess. Set on a coastal landing under a rising red sun the triptych is alive with detail: heavily armored samurais disembark onto the shore from a grand ship while a ceremonial encampment and war banners occupy the right. In the center foreground the Empress is in full military samurai armor with both her katana and wakizashi swords at her side and a dense quiver of arrows back. The composition dramatizes her mythical power with each warrior identified in red cartouches including UjiyÅ« no Kanemura ÅŒya no Sukune ÅŒtomo no Sadehiko Ikina and Maki no Tomitsu no Nushi. The Empress herself labeled “JingÅ« KÅgņColors remain strong. Minor edge wear vertical fold lines as typical for triptychs and scattered toning or soiling consistent with age. Very good overall. Emersi dalle nebbie nei primi secoli di storia nipponica, tra l'VIII e il XI secolo sostituirono rapidamente la precedente classe dominante dei nobili di corte (kuge) e dopo la guerra Genpei (1180-1185) assunsero definitivamente il controllo del paese, mantenendolo fino al 1868. Questo periodo li vide protagonisti assoluti delle vicende storiche del paese, che venne plasmato dalla loro influenza. II samurai riuscì a coniugare le proprie sofisticate abilità di combattente con una profonda cultura e una rigida educazione interiore. II bushido (la via del guerriero) rappresentò per questi guerrieri un codice etico analogo alle virtù cavalleresche dei paladini europei, fondato sulle doti di coraggio, lealtà, onore, benevolenza, sincerità e giustizia. Quest'opera analizza la figura del samurai dalle origini fino ai giorni nostri e costituisce uno studio approfondito a livello storico e una rievocazione dei fatti e personaggi che ancora oggi sono base delle leggende e del folclore nipponico.

Emersi dalle nebbie nei primi secoli di storia nipponica, tra l'VIII e il XI secolo sostituirono rapidamente la precedente classe dominante dei nobili di corte (kuge) e dopo la guerra Genpei (1180-1185) assunsero definitivamente il controllo del paese, mantenendolo fino al 1868. Questo periodo li vide protagonisti assoluti delle vicende storiche del paese, che venne plasmato dalla loro influenza. II samurai riuscì a coniugare le proprie sofisticate abilità di combattente con una profonda cultura e una rigida educazione interiore. II bushido (la via del guerriero) rappresentò per questi guerrieri un codice etico analogo alle virtù cavalleresche dei paladini europei, fondato sulle doti di coraggio, lealtà, onore, benevolenza, sincerità e giustizia. Quest'opera analizza la figura del samurai dalle origini fino ai giorni nostri e costituisce uno studio approfondito a livello storico e una rievocazione dei fatti e personaggi che ancora oggi sono base delle leggende e del folclore nipponico.
