Ciclovia del Danubio da Vienna a Budapest. Vol. 2
ill.

Olanda in bicicletta.

In Campionissimi.

ARCHIVE OF AMERICAN BICYCLE MANUFACTURERS' CATALOGUES AND ADVERTISING PAMPHLETS
Various places as noted below 1900. Thirty-five pamphlets six periodical issues and one standing desk calendar. Individual details provided below. Pamphlets all in original wrappers. Several with minor toning occasional chipping creasing or small tears calendar partially perished. The majority very good to fine. The majority housed in a cloth binder and slipcase. A substantial and colorful collection of early catalogues and pamphlets presenting not only comprehensive listings of bicycles components and accessories but also tips on how to live modern life more fully thanks to ongoing advances in cycling technology. The English Rover Safety Bicycle considered the first modern bicycle a rear-wheel-drive chain-driven cycle with two similarly-sized wheels appeared on the market in 1885-86 and set off a worldwide bicycle craze. By the early 1900s more than 1 billion bicycles were on the roads. With this collection one can chart cycling's early history in the United States and the evolution of some of the leading manufacturers several of which combined bicycle and arms manufacturing. While most of these companies were headquartered in the Northeast Chicago or Ohio several had satellite offices as far west as Denver and San Francisco. Most of the pamphlets are extensively illustrated featuring images of products along with cyclists of all ages including women in increasingly modern cycling outfits. Bicycles not only gave Western women enhanced independence and mobility they also contributed to the "rational dress" movement which liberated women from corsets and ankle-length skirts and advocated more practical clothing. CYCLING - ROUSE, Harry Gillmore.
A Few Hints to Lady Cyclers.
Peoria Illinois: Rouse Hazard & Co. 1891. Do not wear corsets Third edition of this illustrated handbook issued during the peak of the women's cycling boom in Europe and America. The author based in Peoria both designed and manufactured bicycles. The first edition was likely published in 1889 with a second following in 1890. All are scarce: WorldCat records only three copies of the second edition and not the other two. The booklet provides practical advice on clothing ankle movement mounting and dismounting seasonal riding and basic upkeep. On the utility of the bicycle Rouse remarks: "It is faster and safer than a horse unexcelled as a means of healthful exercise and unrivalled among sports as a pleasurable exhilarating recreation" p. 15. For reformers of the late 19th century cycling represented independence mobility and release from restrictive dress codes. By the mid-1890s roughly one in three of America's four million riders were women. At the same time Peoria situated on the Illinois River developed into a thriving industrial and cycling centre. Octavo pp. 24. Illustrations in the text. Original pale brown wrappers front wrappers with title and ornamental border to head and foot. Marguerite Chavner ink signature to title. Wrappers a little creased and variously toned small circular stains to front wrapper and inside rear wrapper rear also with light foxing text neatly reinserted: a very good copy. hardcover
