Coming of age at the same time as the suffrage movement was reaching full swing the new technology offered by the automobile allowed women not only a newfound sense of freedom but the ability to travel unimpeded to demonstrate mastery of a new technology and even opened careers in mobility. This collection's vintage pieces include rare printed material on women and the automobile a signed license letters and photos from women who drove right over gender barriers explore the new world opening to women in the 20th century. <br/><br/>Leading up to the 20th century automobiles became a symbol of women's increasing social mobility and financial independence. Car makers and dealers realized that a significant number of women wanted and were capable of purchasing their own cars; and so they developed vehicles and marketing campaigns specifically for the female population. This collection's early 1913 brochure "To the American Woman" represents this trend and it declares that "the automobile . is of the greatest use to the woman.because of the importance of her work a woman's need for saving time and effort is imperative." The car saved wives and mothers time as they executed familial duties. It also provided some single women with independent incomes. As young women purchased their own vehicles some used the technology to support themselves by becoming mechanics and chauffeurs. These women are represented in this collection by a 1923 "Motor Magazine" with coverage on women car owners a vintage photo of the first woman to motor from Africa to London and an original 1929 Professional Chauffeur's License for Vivian Pickard. Pioneering women like those in this collection overcame gender barriers by increasing their mobility taking advantage of opportunities for mechanical and technical education thus opening new possibilities for women in transportation technology. unknown books‎

‎Op een dag in 1960 organiseerde het Franse consulaat in Detroit een cocktailparty. Vanwege zijn kennis van de Franse taal werd ontwerper Henry De S gur Lauve uitgenodigd als tolk. Op het feest ontmoette hij Pierre Bercot, de directeur van Citro n. Ze raakten aan de praat over het Citro n-design en Bercot nodigde De S gur Lauve uit voor een tweede ontmoeting in Parijs. Dat gesprek verliep positief, en in mei 1960 tekende De S gur Lauve een samenwerkingsovereenkomst met Citro n om ontwerpen te maken die pasten bij de smaak van de Amerikaanse consument. Vanaf dat moment kwam De S gur Lauve ieder jaar met een behoorlijke hoeveelheid schetsen voor nieuwe modellen met een onmiskenbare Amerikaanse invloed. De eerste ontwerpen doen soms nog denken aan gefacelifte DS?en, maar al snel lijken ze soms meer op ruimtevaartuigen dan op auto?s voor dagelijks gebruik. De S gur Lauve had toegang tot Citro ns ontwerpstudio en kon zien met welke ontwerpen de designers bezig waren, zodat hij op basis van die modellen ?veramerikaanste? varianten kon maken. ‎Artist Jacquie Maria Wessels (1959) studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and social psychology at the Free University. Her work is related to documentary photography and is usually the result of a long-term study of a specific subject. The work presented in this book arises when Wessels discovers the wonderful universe of traditional garages: she becomes fascinated by the shapes and colors of the mysterious and unknown objects she finds there. Wessels then travels the world to create poetic still lifes in exotic garages with her analog camera. At first glance, the interiors of garages in Cambodia, Cuba, Italy, Morocco, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, Russia, South Africa, Japan and Sri Lanka seem to contain the same elements, but small details - only visible to a patient and trained eye - pointing out cultural differences. Wessels then points her camera outwards, towards the immediate vicinity of the old garages. There she is struck by the nature that she finds in the rough, industrial landscapes on the outskirts of the cities. In some cases, rampant nature takes over from industry, overgrowing the garages that try to survive. The photographic result is picturesque images with a surprising color palette.
