First edition of this nicely illustrated Studebaker dealer’s salesman manual detailing the very successful 1940 Studebaker models which featured the influence of the streamlined designs of Helen Dryden in consultation with the equally famous contemporary industrial designer Raymond Loewy who began his contract with Studebaker in 1936. The 1940 Studebaker lines featured the President & Commander lines. The 1940 Studebaker models included 4-door sedans 2-door coupes and 2-door Club Sedans fitted with dual sidemounted spare tires. They came stock with cigar lighters clock and dual horns and ran on a 122 in. wheelbase. This manual includes tips for the Studebaker salesmen on performance comfort safety dependability and fuel economy. In addition there is a well-illustrated section on 1940 Studebaker commercial cars. Dryden 1883-1972 was an acclaimed woman artist earning over $ 100000 a year in the 1930’s when her designs first appeared with Studebaker. Dryden continued to work with Loewy at Studebaker until 1940 when she mysteriously drops from the public eye only to make a short appearance in a series of 1956 New York times articles on her dispute with the Welfare Department. Rodney Eckerson 1930-2024 former purchasing agent for the Port of Portland. First edition of this groundbreaking highway engineering urban planning and “blight†redevelopment plan released the year before funding began flowing to underwrite 90% of the eventual 42500 mile interstate freeway “Expressway†system. Oregon leaders had contracted with New York urban planner Robert Moses†in 1943 to develop a public works program and highway building plan for the state which included a series of core recommendations reflected in this later 1955 Traffic Engineering Technical Report prepared by Baldock & Williams who pitched in the report that Portland be carved up by a series of freeways and cleared of blighted urban neighborhoods. The Banfield Freeway which later became I-84 through East Portland was completed first in 1958 and largely was built over the remnants of a vast shanty town in Sullivan Gulch but the construction of I-5 through North Portland began in earnest in 1962 directly demolishing 300 homes and bisecting the African-American Lower Albina neighborhood which at the time was the heart of the city’s only majority black neighborhood. The original colour mylar overlays depict the projected growth of the city and the increasing demand for roads as the interurban and electric railway system was either decommissioned or condemned and automobiles were the focus of transport into and around the city. Also included here is the proposed route for the Mount Hood Freeway which was to run through East Portland all the way to Mt. Hood and by 1969 had received the necessary funding but by then considerable residential backlash had built primarily due to the fact that the proposed Stadium Freeway I-405 ended up bisecting and leveling the former neighborhoods North & West of downtown Portland near Goose Hollow increasing removal of houses in North Portland along the I-5 construction was particularly bitter and the introduction of the early plans for I-205 set off a revolt in Lake Oswego that would have as planned divided the community separating the schools from their community. Eventually after the election of Mayor Neil Goldschmidt the Mount Hood Freeway project would finally be canceled and the Federal money poured into mass transit projects. ‎Grand automobile tour. Extraordinarily well documented photo album filled with 416 original images by an American woman on tour with her husband and friends through Europe in the summer of 1911. Her wry manuscript notes compliment the skillful photos revealing the sweeping pre-World War I landscapes architectural details locals in native costumes as well as the trials and tribulations of the road including punctures flat tires poor road conditions ferries and frequent picnics alongside the roadways.‎

Oblong 4to. 12.75 x 10 in. 204 pp unpaginated. on gray paper stock w/ 416 original silver gelatin black & white photos tipped-in sized 2.75 x 3.5 up to 3.75 x 6 in. including as well over 100 panoramic photos sized mostly 2.8 x 7.5 in. all w/ extensive manuscript notes in neat printed hand following manuscript presentation preface preliminary and end leaves with chipping & fraying to fore-edges some creasing soiling minor tears affecting a few notes 9 photos removed at some point. Recent gray cloth gilt lettering to spine gray paper endpapers presented by Mrs. Harris to Joseph F. Pickett b. 1887 a professional New York driver and chauffeur who drove the group through Europe on Dec. 25 1911. This exceptional photo travelogue details the motoring adventures by Kate Harris her husband Arthur their friend Mrs. Wadsworth and chauffeur Joseph Pickett through Europe just three short years before the devastation of World War I. This album not only demonstrates the level of interest in the burgeoning automobile tourism fad of the Edwardian era but also offers an excellent snapshot of scenic areas throughout Europe. The Harris’s not only brought their luggage and chauffeur via ocean liner in July 1911 but also their 1910 Pierce-Arrow 48-SS Seven-Passenger Touring Sedan fitted with special luggage racks on the rear to haul the many trunks bags picnic & camping equipment as well as a special spare tire bracket on the side which held three spares at any one time often needed. Mrs. Harris appears to have been an enthusiastic amateur photographer and writes that when they drove through an Austro-Hungarian military road she had to lock up their Kodaks. Carefully documenting punctured tires pubs & hotels for lunches and stays and even the mileage covered the group begins their travels in England view the Roman Walls stop in Durham Cathedral Raby Castle onto York Cathedral stop over in Oakham and then down to Cambridge. They stop over in Lofts Hall travel the 51 miles to the London Ritz Hotel and the next day drive the 72.3 miles to Folkestone where the auto was loaded on the 5 PM Boat. They begin their drive in Boulogne with views of the docks the hotel and street scenes included sheep herders moving their flocks out of the way in Hucqueliers young girls hauling bundles of straw and then onto Sedan to visit Franco-Prussian battlefields including the Chateau of Bellevue where Napoleon III surrendered to William I during the Franco-Prussian War. They motor onto Luxembourg Trier view the Porta Nigra Roman gate drive along the Moselle River to the Rhine with stops in Mainz Wurzberg Rothenberg often taking photos of peasants harvesting in the fields children playing under the fountain or in the village streets and even giving locals the remains of their lunch which were gratefully accepted. The drive through the Austro-Hungarian Empire includes stopovers in Prague Iglau Moravia Jihlava including a wonderful image of a young couple with wall of contemporary exhibition and advertising posters plastered behind them; followed by a hair-raising drive up the Styrian Seeberg Pass pilgrims traveling down to Mariazell Leoben Eisnerz Mauterndorf and photos of Tyrolean hunters in local dress. They experience a number of punctured tires as they ascend the Tyrolean and Italian Alps include splendid panoramic photos of the Pasterze Glacier withing the Glockner Group in Carinthia the perilous switchback highway down to Cortina Italy numerous views of the treacherous roads tunnels and scenery along the roads and Alpine villages of the Dolomites including two excellent photos of hemp workers bundling the plants in Storo Italy. The tour continues to Lake Como then the Gondo Gorge and finally along the Simplon Road into La Brique in the southern French Alps and then St. Claude France. The last part of the album concludes with the troupe leaving Bolougne Sept. 14 1911 loading the automobile onto the steamship waiting for Sarah Bernhardt at Folkestone; and then a winding drive through Cornwall including the Dartmoor National Park forest The Lizard St. Michael’s Mount Penzance Lands End St. Ives Tintagel a traffic jam in Stratton viewing Glastonbury and finally panoramic views to roads leading to Chester. The map shows hard surface highways main & improved highways roads trails steam & electric railways rivers lakes dry lakes aqueducts lighthouses county lines and more. The format of this predecessor to the modern Thomas guide provided a convenient portable map for early 1930’s travelers to reference with the state divided into four East to West strips. This map was executed originally around 1930 as the Portland Railway Light & Power CO. interurban is still shown between Vancouver WA and Portland OR. Heald 1898-1974 was a World War I veteran who operated a successful map and real estate survey publishing business into the Great Depression but by the beginning of World War II is listed as unemployed and we could find no employment records after that. After Broome they pushed onto Fitzroy Crossing and Hall Creek hunting gold and then reached the Tanami goldfields and then prospected along the Lander River visiting Brooks’ Soak a traditional Warlpiri Soak which Fred Brook was illegally appropriating. Their mining expedition overlapped the subsequent tragic Conniston Massacres of Australian Warlpiri Anmatyerre and Kaytetye Indigenous Peoples in retribution for the killing of Fred Brooks. Terry’s party quickly moved on and headed to Alice Springs followed the Finke River to Horseshoe Bend Oodnadatta Hawker Adelaide and later Melbourne. Terry was quite taken with the Morris trucks which averaged 5-18 mpg every 250 miles and the lead truck only suffered 41 flat tires in their Dunlop tires. The automotive industry at the beginning of the 1920’s and aviation were both fast growing technically advanced industries and significant training was required to train not only those building maintaining and driving vehicles farm tractors and airplanes but also instructing them in sales methods for dealerships dealership management and sales forces. Of special interest was Greer’s interest in recruiting potential women drivers mechanics and specialists to train as another occupation possibly as a result of the growth of such training during World War I. Erwin Greer 1882-1960 also operated a Chicago automotive dealership selling Maxwell’s Ford’s and other badges and had founded the college by 1902 in order to train drivers for his potential new clients as well as future automobile dealership salesmen. His technical training school later expanded by the late 1920’s to include electronics and electrical engineering students and would graduate over 80000 students by his death. The school would eventually be absorbed into the Lincoln Tech group of training schools in 1969 and still operates several different automotive and technology programs. No copies in Worldcat. Breymeier 1911-1991 was the son of Fred Breymeier b. 1876 noted Montclair NJ banker and auto racing enthusiast who had received the book originally from Vanderbilt. First edition of the second of these privately printed logs documenting the travels through Europe by the famed automobile racing enthusiast -- founder of the Vanderbilt Cup the first major trophy in American auto racing and avid supporter of the America’s Cup yacht races. This motoring memoir begins with the Vanderbilt’s travels in his one of his famed 1907 35-45 HP Renaults which Willie K had talked the company into producing after their 1906 French Grand Prix race win with the 13-liter racing car driven by Ferenc Szisz. One of these won the Morris Park 24-Hour race in October 1907 and subsequently one was used by Vanderbilt to trek over Europe from Liverpool to London then onto Paris over to Germany through the Austrian Tyrols then into Switzerland over to Monte Carlo and returned to Lyons. These are followed by accounts of his travels through Spain in a 1909 55-HP Mercedes witnessing the bull fights in Madrid through the Spanish Countryside and down to Seville followed by a trip through Northern Europe which lasted until 1910. The final trip from southern France around the entire countries of Spain & Portugal in 1911 were driven in a 1911 60-HP Mercedes fitted with a tonneau body and Michelin tires and hood and extra trunk rack in the back. Willie K. Vanderbilt 1878-1944 was a Vanderbilt scion served in World War I on the USS Tarantula on patrol off New York and New Jersey and was a skilled automobile and yacht racer. About 200 copies were printed of these “Log of my Motor†for friends and fellow motoring enthusiasts during the Brass Era carefully documenting mileage road conditions places visited as well as the performance of the various cars. Founded in 1884 in Philadelphia the Hirst-Foger Co. produced durable long-wearing carpets for use in railcars commercial vehicles and later electric and gasoline automobiles and were well known for their colour fastness. Their slogan was “Distinctive Dependable Non-Shrinkable Fast Colors†and this work includes an excellent well-illustrated history of how the fabrics were woven dyed and produced for installation.
