The signatories are a'Beckett Fairfax Grimmett Hurwood Kippax Oldfield and Walker. The signatures were collected by the parents of a five year-old boy when the family travelled on the same ship as the cricketers on the voyage to England in early 1930. The leaves are the first two in an album with the printed image of the ship the Orient Line's SS 'Orford' on the front cover; some of the leaves are held in place with clear paper tape but the overall condition is very good. The page was also signed in pencil by Victor Richardson and again by Walker but the young owner went over these signatures in ink after first having tried to erase the second Walker signature written at right angles along the right-hand side at the end of the other signatures. The balance of the squad's signatures on another page are similarly gone over. However among the seven decent signatures there are some famous names as well as some rare and interesting Test players. Ted a'Beckett played in four Tests; Alec Hurwood played in only two Tests; Charlie Walker toured twice 1930 and 1938 without playing in a Test match due to injuries and he was killed in action in a bombing mission over Germany in 1942. unknown

Mounted on the verso is the signature of Bruce Harris the English author of 'Jardine Justified' 1933 and other cricket books. unknown
It is an exceptional gelatin silver photographic print measuring a gigantic 530 510 mm approximately printed from the negative by the photographer for Michael Treloar in the mid-1990s. Treloar went to an exhibition of Simpson's work at his studio at the time and saw the image on display. It had been commissioned originally as part of a series of portraits of significant older South Australians for an exhibition at the David Jones Gallery in the later 1970s. Treloar in turn commissioned David Simpson to produce a small quantity of prints ten from memory. The photographic paper used to print them was old stock long obsolete; the results were so impressive another batch possibly five was commissioned. Alas only modern paper could be had - still very large at 470 475 mm still a wonderful portrait - but the difference was sufficient to determine that no more prints were commissioned. The original lot were signed and dated 1977 by the photographer and subsequently all prints were personally signed in black felt-tipped pen by Sir Don Bradman. The group of very large format prints has been in storage for nearly twenty years forgotten about if not exactly lost until now . The outstanding quality of these portrait photographs make them a far more fitting tribute to the man than a lot of the pedestrian and indifferent material universally on offer. The 470 475 mm prints signed by Sir Don Bradman are available for $1250 each. unknown

Adelaide: Rigby 1933. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Adelaide Rigby 1933. Small oblong folio 40 pages including the covers with illustrations on 24 pages 16 are full-page and the front cover. Two-colour pictorial card covers recently reattached with the spine reinforced on the verso; an excellent copy of an absolute rarity. 'The Book has been written for the new regime of cricket; the batter bruise and bust cricket which has been thrust upon us. This travesty of an erstwhile noble sport demands new techniques to master it . We find after years of research that all previous books on cricket dealt mainly with batting bowling fielding and records. It is not now sufficient to wield a polished bat to execute a classic leg-glance or a neat on-drive' - you get the drift. The delicious irony is that this copy has the contemporary ownership details of a young Jeff Pash 1916-2005 then aged about 17. A few years later in 1939 he was awarded the Magarey Medal as the 'Fairest and Most Brilliant' player in the South Australian National Football League. Rigby paperback

Highly interesting homemade album of Cricket Scores available nowhere else specifically documenting the triumphs of three young members of the Blomfield family namely: E.G. Edward George C.J. The image is a full-length portrait with ball grasped firmly in the right hand standing alongside a wicket in the practice nets at Lord's in 1899; there is slight surface silverfish damage not affecting the figure. The photograph laid down on the original slightly foxed printed mount of Reinhold Thiele and Co. 66 Chancery Lane is archivally matted ready for framing total visible area 335 280 mm. A window in the rear of the modern mount displays the bold ink surname signature of William Howell. A rare and impressive item. unknown
It is a stylised head-and-shoulders portrait in fine condition inscribed and signed across the base of the image 'Yours truly W.P. Howell'; it dates from his first tour of England in 1899. Howell a useful all-rounder toured England three times taking all 10 for 28 against Surrey in his first appearance there. This particular photograph comes from the personal collection of Victor Trumper: it also comes from the superb Ramamurthy collection and is sold with a letter of authentication and a mint copy of the 1997 auction sale catalogue where the item is illustrated with the provenance not noted. unknown
The head-and-shoulders image shows a young-looking Jackson in a NSW cap with 'Australian Test Team - A. Jackson' printed beneath it; the verso is printed for mailing purposes and includes the words 'This is a real photograph'. It was issued as part of a series of fifteen portrait postcards of the 1930 Australian Test team. 'Jackson reached his peak at 19 when in Adelaide against England in February 1929 he played in his first Test match and scored a chanceless 164 runs in 368 minutes. He had opened the first innings with W.M. Woodfull; at one stage the score was 3 for 19. P.G.H. Fender said he made "every conceivable stroke with perfection of timing". He was the toast of Australia. He was selected for the 1930 tour of England but the weather and ill health constricted him though he scored 1023 runs. The disease tuberculosis stalked him; he failed in the 1930-31 series against the West Indies and was dropped from the Australian side. Lung ravage was diagnosed in 1931 and Jackson went to a sanatorium in the Blue Mountains later to a cottage there to be looked after by his sister Margaret. Seeking warmer weather he went to Queensland in 1932 played some cricket and looked forward to the 1934 tour of England. But he died in Brisbane on 16 February 1933' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. This image would appear to show him in his prime in 1929 and we suggest the inscription is pretty much contemporary with the publication of the postcard. unknown
It is a stylised head-and-shoulders portrait in fine condition inscribed and signed across the base of the image 'Yours faithfully Alfred E Johns'; it dates from his second tour of England in 1899. Johns twice toured England as deputy wicket-keeper without playing a Test and in 1922 was appointed a trustee of the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This particular photograph comes from the personal collection of Victor Trumper: it also comes from the superb Ramamurthy collection and is sold with a letter of authentication. unknown
The photograph is taken from behind the wicket and includes the wicket-keeper the fieldsman at slips Alan Fairfax the cartwheeling stump and Alan Kippax the batsman at the non-striker's end. Of far greater consequence however is the signature pencilled on the verso of the image: that of Archie Jackson the New South Wales and Australian Test batsman who died of tuberculosis in 1933 at the early age of 23. Jackson and his friend and supporter Fairfax were room-mates on the 1930 tour of England which helps explain why this particular image from this tour bears his ownership signature. unknown
It is a seated studio portrait in fine condition inscribed and signed across the base of the image 'Yours truly J.J. Kelly'; it dates from his fourth and final tour of England in 1905. Kelly was a 'wicket-keeper of pronounced ability' and was the successor to Blackham. This particular photograph comes from the personal collection of Victor Trumper who married Kelly's sister-in-law; it also comes from the superb Ramamurthy collection and is sold with a letter of authentication and a mint copy of the 1997 auction sale catalogue where the item is illustrated with the provenance not noted and the Trumper connection by marriage incorrectly described. unknown

Signed in ink by the Honorary Scorer J.J. Cantwell '59 yrs connected with game'. A few light fingermarks; mild offsetting to the Victorian side of the leaf; in very good condition. unknown
The signatures are Brown Captain Alec Bedser Berry Close Compton Dewes Evans Hollies Hutton twice - once in ink McIntyre Parkhouse Sheppard Simpson Warr Washbrook and Wright plus Nash one of the managers in ink. The only player not to have signed is Bailey. Given the starring role Hutton played in the series let alone throughout his 27-year long first-class career it is perhaps appropriate that his signature should appear twice! Two small light marks well clear of the signatures; in excellent condition. unknown

Image sizes are given; all are presented on their original studio mounts now archivally remounted and matted ready for framing. The subjects are John Douglas 195 145 mm not signed by Moore; Arthur Gilligan 300 190 mm SM; Patsy Hendren 195 135 mm SN; Jack Hobbs 305 205 mm SN; Henry Howell 200 145 mm SN; and Maurice Tate 185 135 mm SP. New Zealand-born May Moore 1881-1931 emigrated to Australia in 1910 and opened her first studio the following year in Sydney. Working initially together with her sister Mina who ran her own studio in Melbourne from 1916 her excellent portrait photography attracted a large clientele especially among artistic circles. May in particular photographed many Sydney celebrities and it is not surprising to find that the cricketing heroes of the day made it to her studio. With 'a studio style using dramatic single source lighting dark backgrounds rich brown toned papers and sombre colour mounts and favouring head and shoulder studies . the sisters were extraordinary in their ability to portray a range of moods appropriate to their sitters' Gael Newton. This series of images certainly exemplifies this impressive style. Illness forced May Moore to retire about 1928 and she died of cancer in 1931. 6 items. unknown
The signatures are Allen Captain Ames Barnett Copson Duckworth Fagg Farnes Fishlock Hammond Hardstaff Leyland Robins Sims Verity Voce Worthington and Wyatt plus the manager Captain R. Howard. The photograph 218 x 294 mm is laid down as issued on the original printed mount; the photographer is E. Ziegler 40 Elizabeth St Norwood Ernest Charles Victor Ziegler active 1879-1925. The photograph and mount are in superb condition behind glass in the original frame. 'The Advertiser' 11 December 1931 sets the scene for these Inter-Collegiate matches: 'Today the annual cricket match between St Peter's and Prince Alfred Colleges will begin at the Adelaide Oval. Last year the game was played at Prince Alfred College the first time in the history of the matches first played in 1878 that the Adelaide Oval was not available. The match is one of the most important cricket events outside first-class matches in South Australia although in recent years it has failed to sic the importance and drawing power of inter-collegiate matches played before the war. Many famous cricketers have graduated from the college teams'. The 1910 SPSC team was no exception; sitting next to each other are C.E. Pellew and Vice-Captain A.G. Moyes. 'Nip' Pellew played for South Australia 1913-14 to 1928-29 the AIF Touring XI 1919 to 1919-20 and Australia ten Tests in 1920-21.
