Nata nell'ambito delle manifestazioni per il 150° anniversario della fondazione del Club Alpino Italiano, la guida costituisce un utile strumento per l'escursionista a piedi e in mountain bike che, sulle orme dei viaggiatori di un tempo, desidera scoprire il ricco patrimonio di storia, arte e natura di quella parte dell'Appennino Centrale dove si toccano quattro regioni italiane: Abruzzo, Lazio, Marche e Umbria. Percorso nell'antichità da una delle famose strade consolari romane, la via Salaria che collegava il Mar Adriatico a Roma, e da un altrettanto importante itinerario da Spoleto a L'Aquila lungo la dorsale appenninica, il territorio oggi si caratterizza per la presenza dei parchi nazionali dei Monti Sibillini e del Gran Sasso-Laga. La guida è suddivisa in cinque aree omogenee, ciascuna percorribile in 4-5 tappe per un totale di 425 km a piedi (475 in mountain bike). Oltre ai saggi introduttivi dove sono evidenziati gli elementi unitari più significativi, per ciascuna tappa viene riportata una descrizione dell'itinerario a piedi e in mountain bike, seguita da approfondimenti culturali relativi ai punti di interesse presenti lungo il percorso.‎

‎Montana resident possibly an attorney. ALS 2pp separate leaves 8½" X 11" Harlem MT 1904 July 21. Addressed to "My dear James & Albert" Smith's brothers. Near fine. Handsomely penned in black ink in a large readable hand this letter largely concerns the claims on "poor Writ's property" for "some of his old time prospect loving friend got around me and did not want Writs mining claims sold that he had held onto for 20 years as they would go for little or nothing. So I paid out on them $500.00 & told the administrator not to sell them. They have to be represented again within a few months it will take between $300 & $400.00 dollars Will you help me represent them If you cannot or do not want to will you let me have your interests On account of your being in Canada & so far away If you will let me have your interests I will send you $25.00 apiece. Should I ever be luckly sic to get any thing out of them I will send you something more." Goes on to explain "the claims are so high up in the mountains and the snow comes there so early the claims must be represented early or else they will be lost. The claims that Writ had in Thunder Mountain have gone by default they were so far away I could do nothing about them." Of some town named Bellevue in Montana he notes "Bellevue is a gone down place very dull there." Invites his brothers to visit: "I'd like to have you both come out and see this country some time do not put it off too long it would be a fine trip for you." Strong's A Trip to the Yellowstone National Park in July August and September 1875 the word began to spread: "There is probably no river in the world the equal of the Yellowstone for big trout." Though tourist parties began to travel to the Yellowstone it was still uncertain territory. In the late summer of 1877 it was the seat of war.<br /> In early September 1877 Civil War veteran General Oliver O. Howard who a decade earlier had founded Howard University and served as its president was leading his troops on the trail of the Nez Perce who had just left the Yellowstone Park. Howard's forces more than 500 strong reached the northeast corner of the Park on Clark's Fork on 7 September. The Nez Perce under the leadership of Chief Joseph moved through incredibly rugged terrain and ultimately evaded both Howard and another military cohort under Col. Samuel D. Sturgis.<br /> This contemporary record of a Yellowstone river trout was made on a large sheet of ruled ledger paper. The anonymous artist is believed to be Lieut. Cyrus A. Earnest of the 8th U.S. Infantry as the item was found among his papers with a cyanotype of Fort Bridger California where he was posted following his Yellowstone expedition service as well as several related printed documents of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion California Commandery. These items accompany the drawing.<br /> Earnest 1840-1893 was a lieutenant in the Eighth Infantry and served with Custer in the 1873 Yellowstone Expedition to survey a route for the Northern Pacific Railroad along the Yellowstone River. While serving under Howard in the Nez Perce expedition Earnest received special commendation for a heroic 2-day over 100 mile ride over rough terrain to resupply the army at Baker's battlefield.<br /> Ernest who was born in Ohio used the conventional name for the brook trout Salmo fontanalis but that describes a non-native eastern species. Yellowstone cutthroat trout or black spotted are the most widespread native trout with "highly variable coloration but generally yellow-brown or brassy/bronze" They were first described as a distinct species Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri by Jordan and Gilbert in 1883.<br /> A remarkable artifact from the earliest years of the U.S. presence in the Yellowstone valley and a reminder that at the edges of battle people attend to customary tasks and pursuits: fishing and making a record of daily activities.
