‎Après l'expansion du tourisme balnéaire à la fin du XIXe, les villages de montagne prennent le relais au début du XXe. En 1921, le baron de ROTSCHILD fait construire les premiers hôtels de Mégève. Dans les années 1930, de nombreux facteurs conditionnent le développement du ski : l'industrialisation des vallées de montagne augmente la population de ces régions et oriente les loisirs vers les "sports d'hiver". Des écoles françaises de ski, ainsi que les premiers téléphériques, voient le jour. Le ski devient un loisir ouvert à tous, aux enfants et aux femmes, qui voit le développement d'une mode spécifique : col roulé de laine, gants épais, patalons et vestes molletonnés.Léon BENIGNI (1892-1948) a illustré Alfred de MUSSET (Bénézit, I, 624-25).
