‎Première édition en français , par le Père Niceron, du récit des voyages entrepris dès 1689 en Afrique et en Asie par Jean Ovington, chapelain du roi d'Angleterre. L’auteur ayant rejoint la Compagnie des Indes orientales en tant qu'aumônier, Ovington fut affecté au navire Benjamin de la Compagnie pour un voyage aux Indes orientales en 1689. Ovington s'arrêta brièvement à Bombay puis s'installa à Surat pendant deux ans et demi. Son récit décrit Bombay comme un puits de débauche rempli de prostituées et d'ivrognes. De Surat, Ovington a longuement commenté l'influence moghole, les caractéristiques religieuses et culturelles des hindous et des parsis, et la nature du mendiant religieux mahométan ou faussaire. Il fut de retour en Irlande ou il fit l’apologie du thé vert .Le chapitre XX (pp. 308-315) du tome II est consacré aux vers à soie. ‎"Tibetan Medical Paintings" presents a hitherto unknown set of paintings found in Buryiatia that illustrate a famous 17th century medical treatise. The complex system of prevention and care outlined in them has been in use since the eigth century and is still practised today in parts of Tibet, India, Nepal, Ladakh, Bhutan and Mongolia. Tibetan medicine might have remained obscure had it not been for Sangye Gyamtso (1653-1705), regent of the Great Fifth Dalai Lama and founder of the monastic medical school of Chakpori in Lhasa, who integrated its complex and diverse wisdom into a coherent body of knowledge. The roots of this rich system of treating the body are depicted in 76 brilliantly coloured, highly detailed paintings, which illustrate the treatise and are the focus of this edition. These paintings are exact replicas of the original paintings for the "Blue Beryl" treatise, created between 1687 and 1703. Two sets of the paintings are known to have survived in Chinese-occupied Tibet, but the most complete one, which is reproduced here, has recently come to light beyond its frontiers. Prepared at the time of the thirteenth Dalia Lama (c.1 920), the 76 paintings were found near Lake Baikal in southern Siberia, at the Buryiat Historical Museum in Ulan-Ude in Buryiatia. Of all indigenous medical traditions, only that of Tibet produced a complete visual documentation for the training of doctors. Sangye Gyamtso composed the "Blue Beryl" treatise as a definite commentary on the ancient text entitled "Four Tantras". It soon became the handbook and aide-memoire for generations of Tibetan doctors. The large paintings (89 x 106 cms) were created by an atelier of artists who depicted in more than 10,000 individual images the many themes, subjects, and properties of Tibetan medicine. From explicit cartoon-like strips that delineate the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses to detailed anatomical charts, the paintings also present a vast range of substances - herbal, mineral, and animal - used in the preparation of remedies, and span such fields as dream interpretation, embryology, sexuality, and the necessity of preventive medicine. As western interest in eastern forms of medicine grows, Tibetan medicine, a thousand-year-old sytem drawn from a great variety of cross-cultural influences, remains relatively unknown, "Tibetan Medical Paintings" will prove of appeal to the general reader interested in alternative and complementary medical systems, and also to medical historians, pharmacologists, anthropologists, physicians, and to lovers of Tibetan culture.
