Plantes des Pyrenees centrales. Musci. Collectionees par M. Fourcade. Recompenses aux diverses Expositions Medaille de Vermeil Medaille de Bronze Grand Module et mention Honorable a l’Exposition Universelle 1867.
Bagneres-de-Luchon & Toulouse: n.p.; Lith. Salettes re des Balances 35 ca. 1867. Thick folio. 12.75 x 18.5 x 2 in. 29 leaves unnumbered w/ 350 botanical samples mounted all w/ carefully mounted text slips many in manuscript hand 1 large folding lithograph map of area in Central Pyrenees around Luchon w/ manuscript annotations blank excised from far right margin and substituted with printed text identifying Fourcade as the collector of the samples. Quarter-cloth over varnished printed black cloth boards decorative gilt woodcut borders gilt bronze & silver title lettering on front cover back cover w/ floral lozenge minor wear to corners some edgewear minor bumping some dustsoiling to fore-edges still a VG copy w/ engraved library bookplate on front pastedown and embossed stamps at corners of first & last leaves. First edition stated of this remarkable herbarium sample book composed of the native mosses in the central Pyrenees and southern France in and around the spa town of Bagneres-de-Luchon. Fourcade has carefully documented the Phaxcum or Phascacae the annual mosses; the Grimmiaceae or Grimmiales mosses; the Bryophytes or Bryaceae mosses which form dense turfs on the wet rocks and soils in the Pyrenees the Neckeraceae Moss Thamnobryum neckeroides the Family Leskeaceae including the Lescuraea Leskea Pseudolskea and many others. Fourcade published several different installments in his herbarium of the Pyrenees between 1860 and the 1870s all typically arranged with varying plates and specific specimens. This volume on mosses appears to have been a working copy as unlike others in the series this one has 25% of the samples with manuscript labels and manuscript corrections rather than the printed labels. Fourcade’s herbarium won several awards at the famed 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris which celebrated the height of the Second French Empire under Napoleon III. Fourcade 1825-1890 91 was a noted naturalist and botanist who served as the curator of the museum of the city of Bagneres-de-Luchon and was well-noted for his extensive explorations through the central Pyrenees making botanical and geological studies and collecting specimens. He wrote and published several articles and works on mushrooms algae moss lichens as well as publishing a large herbarium for training French farmers and agricultural workers. Although several reference works cite Fourcade’s death as 1891 the December 1890 Bulletin de la Societe Botanique de France includes an extensive obituary. No copies located in Worldcat.
