Il est marchand de simples ou quincaillier, et fait le médecin, le vétérinaire, le mendiant souvent, le vagabond toujours. Les lettres échangées avec le pays, les livres de comptes tenus en tournée, le registre du banquier qui avance les fonds nous racontent les pratiques quotidiennes, les espérances et les risques du métier, les inquiétudes et la tristesse d'être séparé des siens. Et l'on saisit alors une activité dont la mémoire des montagnes a voulu se souvenir comme l'âge d'or de la liberté perdue. — Cette étude concerne les villages situés au sud-est de Grenoble, dans les étroites vallées du massif de l'Oisans : la vallée de la Romanche qui, par le col du Lautaret, mène en Briançonnais; la vallée de l'eau d'Olle qui relie l'Oisans à la Maurienne par le col d'Ornon ; enfin, l'aride vallée du Vénéon qui s'arrête à la Bérarde, au cœur du massif montagneux. Il faut d'entrée préciser qu'en aucun village la population est totalement colporteuse.
