London: Lovell Reeve 1860. x 187 16 pages 20 plates. In 1859 famed Crimean War photographer Roger Fenton visited North Wales and photographed scenes along the Conway Conwy in Welsh River. After examining proofs of Fenton's stereoviews James Bridge Davidson traveled the same route and prepared descriptive text to accompany the images. The result was this superb little travel book that centers around 20 of Fenton's original albumen stereoviews. A rare title: Worldcat locates only 27 copies; COPAC lists only 3 copies. Our copy is clean and tight in the original red cloth that is highly decorated in gilt; all-edges gilt. It has been sympathetically rebacked with the original spine cloth laid down. Gilt lettering and decoration on spine are faded but stll clear; gilt decoration on front and rear covers is bright; bumped corners professionally mended; light foxing on first few pages. The stereoviews are clean and bright; their card mounts are free of foxing. An excellent example of a scarce 19th century book illustrated with original photographs. First Edition. Hardcover.
