Boston: T. and J. Fleet 1765. 4pp. printed a folded sheet plus an envelope with contemporary manuscript description. Folio. Folded and separated horizontally with several other chips along fold lines somewhat affecting text. Some browning and foxing. About good. Untrimmed. THE BOSTON EVENING-POST was a weekly newspaper originally published by Thomas Fleet from 1735 and under the name of THE WEEKLY REHEARSAL from 1731. "Thomas considers it the best newspaper in Boston in its time. Fleet continued to publish the paper until his death in July 1758 after which his sons Thomas and John in co-partnership continued it as a morning newspaper with equal success till April 1775 when the Revolutionary War terminated its existence after a continuous publication of nearly forty years" - Evans. This copy of the newspaper from July 1 1765 contains an early printing of the Virginia Resolves against the Stamp Act written and passed by the Virginia colonial assembly through the efforts of Patrick Henry on May 29. They appeared first in an issue of the NEWPORT MERCURY on June 24. The version that appears here includes the final most strident resolution: "The general assembly of this colony together with his Majesty or his substitutes have in their representative capacity the only exclusive right and power to lay taxes and imposts upon the inhabitants of this colony: and that every attempt to vest such power in any other person or persons whatever than the general assembly aforesaid is illegal unconstitutional and unjust and have a manifest tendency to destroy British as well as American freedom." The more conservative members of the assembly succeeding in having this last resolution struck from the official record the day after they had been passed but the Virginia Resolves were nevertheless a significant contributor to colonial resistance to the Stamp Act and an important early milestone on the road to the American Revolution. Obligated To Flee The Monastery With The Other Monks Due To The Napoleonic Invasions He Became An Itinerant Professor In Karlsruhe Paris London Glasgow And Dublin. Feinaigle Visited Paris In 1806 And Delivered Public Lectures On Local And Symbolical Memory Which He Described As A 'New System Of Mnemonics And Methodics.' He Was Accompanied By A Young Man Who Acted As Interpreter. Count Metternich The Austrian Ambassador And His Secretaries Followed The Whole Course Of Lectures And Spoke In Highly Laudatory Terms Of The System Which Though Novel In Its Applications Was Founded On The Topical Memory Of The Ancients As Described By Cicero And Quinctilian. Feinaigle Was Exposed To Much Criticism And Sarcasm In The Press And Was Ridiculed On The Stage By Dieulafoy In A Farce Called 'Les Filles De M�moire Ou Le Mn�moniste.' By Way Of Reply He Gave On 27 February 1807 A Public Exhibition To An Audience Of About Two Thousand Persons. He Did Not Himself Appear But Was Represented By Twelve Or Fifteen Of His Pupils Who Gave Illustrations Of His Art. Afterwards He Went On A Lecturing Tour Through Various Parts Of France. Early In 1811 He Came To England And Delivered Lectures At The Royal Institution And The Surrey Institution In London; And At Liverpool Edinburgh And Glasgow. The Fee For Attending A Course Of Fifteen Or Sixteen Of His Lectures Was 5L. 5S. And This Sum Was Paid By Crowds Of Pupils For Feinaigle Made A Mystery Of The Details Of His Method And Was In Consequence Denounced In Some Quarters As An Impostor. He Gained However Many Devoted Adherents. The Rev. Peter Baines Afterwards Bishop Of Siga Introduced His System Of Mnemonics And Also His General Plan Of Education Into The Benedictine College Of Ampleforth Yorkshire And A Society Of Gentlemen Founded A School Near Mountjoy Square Dublin Which Was Placed Under Feinaigle's Personal Superintendence And Conducted On His Principles. He Died In Dublin On 27 December 1819.Gregor Von Feinaigle Is Credited By Some As Being The Inspiration For The Word "Finagle". With Stamp On Copyright Page "Duplicate / Ex Libris Bernard Zufall"; Bernard Zufall 1894-1971 Was A Magician Author And A Memory Expert. Billed As The "Human Encyclopedia" Zufall Was A Master Of Mnemonics The Ability To Remember Huge And Specific Pieces Of Information Through The Technique Of Association. During His Lifetime Zufall Collected The Largest Library Of Books On Mnemonics Some 1000-Plus Titles. The Collection Was Gifted To Yale University. In 1940 He Published A Six-Volume Series Of Books Of Magic Effects Based On Mnemonics Called Zufall's Memory Trix. By disposition a student, he became greatly engrossed in his researches, and secured copies of all the old records of voyages to the coast of British Columbia and knew their contents intimately. His duties in command of the Quadra took him to every portion of the British Columbia coast, including a great many waters that were practically unsurveyed, and so he acquired a thorough knowledge not only of the charts in existence, but also of the unwritten lore of Indians and traders experienced in the intricacies of that most magnificent coast. Major damage and closed tears to pages 527-530 with two chunks missing from page 529. Fortunately all text remains and is legible. Once inch tear to interior of page 546. Map at page 547 removed.
